【題目】 My first career had been related to audiology (聽力學(xué))---one that allowed me to work part time while tending my growing family. But when my children grew up and left home, I found myself longing to be outside, not in a soundproof room in the hospital.

So I began attending classes at the local university, hoping that might lead me to a new career. 1 “What gave you pleasure as a child?” the counselor (顧問) asked. I thought for a while before responding, “Playing outside in the woods.” Our discussion eventually led to a second master’s degree, this one in zoology, and the job as a naturalist at a state park. I was 44 years old. 2

But as I climbed the career ladder, my time in the field disappeared. I was chained to a computer screen. In the back of my mind, the career counselor’s question sounded again. “3

Shortly thereafter, an opportunity presented itself: a 4-month field research project at a university in the Netherlands. I found that field research allowed me to play in the woods again, but with a new purpose.

At the end of the project, I was invited to participate in the “sandwich” Ph.D. program, in which students do research in their home country while receiving support and instruction in the Netherlands. I was 60 years old. I didn’t think that earning a Ph. D. would further my career. 4

Still, my colleagues raised their eyebrows. “5“ they asked, “It is all about the journey,” I responded.

A. What gave you pleasure as a child?

B. I also went to see a career counselor.

C. What do you intend to do with a Ph.D.?

D. But I wanted to follow my new passion.

E. But when it was no longer right, I changed direction.

F. Can you believe you’re actually getting paid to have this much fun?

G. And I was delighted to once again experience the joy of being outdoors.

【題目】 Need a fall fix? Try one from these great places.

1. Mackinac Island, Michigan

The only way to reach this famed car-free island is by boat and ferry, and once visitors arrive, they are attracted by the history, scenery and fall colors. “It’s a throwback to years past, a little town, and there’s a big state park as well,” Blackwell says. “ You’re allowed to have boats all around the island.”

2. Tellico Lake, Tennessee

With nearly 400 miles of shoreline, this waterway flowing out of the Great Smoky Mountains is largely unexploited, well-protected in its natural state. Fall visitors find a range of colors reflecting in the clean waters, says Blackwell, who vacationed in the area with his family as a child. “The thick forest there just allows you to see more greenery and wildlife."

3. Dillon Reservoir, Colorado

With an hour from Denver, this lake is home to what claims to be the nation's highest sailing club, at an altitude of more than 9,000 feet. Marinas in the towns of Dillon and Frisco make it easy to get out on he water and to see the bright yellows and golds of fall leaves. “ People are surprised that there's boating in Colorado, and you can see the mountains just before the snowball," Blackwell says.

4. Lake Monroe, Indiana

The state’s largest lake is surrounded by more than 13,000 acres of protected forest and three recreation areas, making it an ideal place to see fall colors, particularly from oaks and the tulip poplar, the state tree. “ It’s a gem (寶石) in southern Indiana," says Blackwell, who grew up in the area. “There are lots of different activities: canoeing, kayaking and fishing.”

【題目】閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。

Hi, I am Jane. I like the book named The Story of My Life by Helen Keller, which is the most influential book in my life. It is filled with courage, struggle and faith throughout. Helen Keller was once in deep despair in her childhood, but finally she decided to overcome her physical defects and live happily. Furthermore, she showed great patience in her long and hard learning period. I have learned, above all, three lessons from her story. First, she taught me that often the road to success is to face hardships bravely. Maybe you are born under a star yet you can stand a better chance than others. It is therefore important that you screw up your courage when courage is needed. Second, the destruction of part of her senses did not prevent her from learning: on the contrary, she had made continual efforts to go deeper into the realm of knowledge, and her perseverance had thus helped her overcome many handicaps. Third, she advised that we should make the most of our sense-organs as if we would lose them soon because in this way we would observe the world more carefully than ever before.

The book is inspiring in that it is one brimming over with the unbending will of a gallant woman set with seemingly insurmountable (adj.不可克服的) difficulties. I hope I can be as courageous as she.
