Growing up to Be Independent
Growing up is not always easy. When facing difficulties, courage and a spirit of independence can be morn useful than crying for help. That's what Hong Zhanhui's story of growing from boy to man with family hardships tells us.
Hong who was born 1982 in a poor family in Xinhua County, Henan Province is now a hero in people's mind. When he was only 11, his father became mentally ill and one day came back with an abandoned baby girl. A year later, Hong's mother and younger brother both left home because of poverty and pressure from his sick father. Their burdens fell onto the 12-year-old's shoulders: to treat his father's illness, bring up the adopted sister Chenchen, and to go on to study.Hong didn't give up. Since a young age, he has worked in part-time jobs to feed his family. At the same time, he has studied at college. To take care of Chenchen, he worked hard to rent a room
near his campus for her, and send her to school. After Hong's story went public, people were moved to tears by his unselfishness. Hard as his life sas, Hong didn't abandon his father and the adopted sister, because they needed his help. With his hard-won money, he even aided other students struggling against misfortunes.
Hong's story shows that with love and willpower, no hardship can defeat a person but himself. So when facing difficulties, don't complain about bad luck. Consider what morn you could do for your family and society and you'll find the world smiling back.

Dear Mr. Hong,
Recently I have read your story in the newspaper that you who was a poor student grow up to be independent. You manage to study well as well as take care of your sick father and adopted sister by working in spare time.
I'm quite moved by your story.I think we teenagers could learn a lot from you. You're independent, hard-working, persevering, kind and optimistic and you live a hard but meaningful life. It's known to all that a spirit of independence can have a good effect on adolescents. It helps push us to learn more and lead us not to give way to difficulties.
Learning to be independent is beneficial to us. I want to share my story with you. Little child as I was 10 years ago, I was independent so that I went to school on my own. One heavy raining afternoon, I was on my way home alone though it rained cats and dogs. Despite the rain, I walked so carefully that I wouldn't fall to the ground. At last, I went home safe. My parents were anxious waiting for me at home and they felt so proud of me. After reading your story, I really want to make friends with you. I hope we can meet someday.
Yours,
Li Hua

閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。
In junior high school, one of my classmates, Ethan, was addicted to TV. This boy simply knew everything about such pop shows as Who’s the Boss?
Then one day Ethan’s mother made him an offer in order to draw him back to his school subjects. She promised that she would give him $200 if he could go a full month without watching any TV. None of us thought Ethan could do it, but he did quit TV. His mom paid him $200. He went out and bought a TV, the biggest he could find.
In recent years, hundreds of schools have carried out experiments with paying kids with cash for showing up or getting good grades. All school kids admire this trend. But it upsets adults. Teachers say that we are rewarding kids for doing what they should be doing of their own will.Psychologists warn that money can actually make kids perform worse by making the act of learning cheap. The debate has become a typical battle over why our kids are not learning at the rate they should be despite decades of reforms and budget increases.

閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。
When I was a teenager, my dad did everything he could to advise me against becoming a brewer(啤酒制造者). He didn’t even want me anywhere near a vat(釀酒用的桶). So I did as he asked. I got good grades and went to Harvard.
In the second year, I began to realize that I’d never done anything but go to school. So, at 24 I decided to drop out (輟學(xué))for some time. Obviously, my parents didn’t think this was a great idea. But I felt strongly that one can’t wait till he is 65 to do what he wants to in life. Having worked for 2 years, I went back to Harvard to continue my study.
After graduation, I got a highly-paid job in Boston. After working there five years, I wondered, “Is this what I want to be doing when I’m 50?” At that time, Americans spent good money on beer in low quality. Why not make good beer for Americans? I thought.
I decided to quit my job to become a brewer. When I told Dad, he was astonished, but in the end he supported me. Six weeks later, at the Great American Beer Festival, my Sam Adams Boston Lager(淡啤酒) won the top prize for American beer. In the end I was destined(注定) to be a brewer. My advice to the young is simple: decide by yourselves not your seniors what you should do for a life when you are young.

China bans free plastic bags
CHINA began a crackdown on plastic bags, banning production of thin bags and forbidding supermarkets and shops from handing them out free, Tuesday, June 1, 2008.
Chinese people use up to 3 billion plastic bags a day and the country has to refine 5 million tons of oil every year to make plastics used for packaging, according to a report on the Website of China Trade News, and fails to get rid of them properly, wasting valuable oil and littering the country, the State Council said in a notice posted on the Central Government’s Website.
“Our country consumes huge amounts of plastic bags every year. While providing convenience to consumers, they have also caused serious pollution, waste of energy and resources, because of too much use and inadequate recycling,” it said.
Worries about pollution are growing among ordinary citizens, as years of breakneck growth has a very bad effect on the country’s air and water, but the new ban may not be universally welcomed.

閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。
Beijing is set to lift its12-year-old ban on fireworks for the traditional Spring Festival holidays, probably starting from next Chinese Lunar New Year in January 2006.
Zhou Jidong, director of the Legislative Affairs Office of the Beijing municipal government(市政府), told a press conference last Thursday that his office has completed the draft(草案) regulations on firework safety supervision.
Under the draft regulations , setting off fireworks will be allowed in the capital city’s eight downtown districts from the Eve of the Lunar New Year to Lantern Festival 15 days later. When the draft regulations were posted on the municipal government’s website for suggestions, local residents gave a total of 969 pieces of advice, with 70 per cent in favour of lifting the ban. Related surveys suggest local people who want to light fireworks during Spring Festival range from 50.4 per cent to 86.3 per cent.
In fact, the voice of opposition and criticism has never ended since the municipal government introduced the ban in 1993, considering pollution, noise, fire worries and personal injuries caused by letting off fireworks.
Opponents accused the government of introducing the ban only for the sake of facilitating its management role while disregarding the will of the people. Worse, they say, the ban threatened to break down the age—old traditions of celebrating Spring Festival among Chinese people.
Partly due to this endless objection, about 106 out of a total 282 Chinese cities that had followed Beijing’s lead in banning fireworks have already dropped the ban.

We spend hours, days and years of our lives in education. But how perfect do you think your school is? Imagine you could decide your ideal school. What would it be like? What would you be doing? We wanted to find out what teenagers around the world thought. Here is what they said.
Sonia from Italy: I’d like a room where we can go and relax and play computer games and chat with friends. Some older pupils in the school have this but I think there should be a place for everyone to go when they want to switch off from the lessons.
Richard form USA: I think it would be great to have a day off every week, as well as the weekend. If that day was a Friday or a Monday, we would have a long weekend every week. I’m sure we could learn just as much in fewer hours.
David from UK: The school dinners are absolutely disgusting. There is a little shop called a “tuck shop” which we can go to in our breaks but it just sells rubbish. I’d like to be able to buy fruit and healthy snacks.
Hannah from Australia: My school environment is great – especially the sports facilities. We’ve got a swimming pool and tennis courts. It’s teachers I’d change. I think they should give us more freedom and choice about how we study and what we study. I also think it’s ridiculous that we have to wear a school uniform.
Sam form Mexico: I’d like clean toilets and showers, a big library, big lockers and a restaurant. Not much to ask for.
