A bout 18 months ago, my father was in hospital recovering from a major lung operation. My mother had recently  36 , and my father had taken the loss of his partner of 55 years very hard and had lost interest in   37 . Trying to get him to  38 each day was quite a chore as he didn’t want anything. The one thing,  39 , that he would ask us to bring him was ice-cream.
One evening, to our   40 , he refused to eat the ice-cream,  41  I placed it in a staffroom freezer. A little while later, my son decided he wanted it, so I   42  it for him.
As I passed another ward(病房), a   43 asked, “Are there more where that came from?” When I explained the   44 , she apologized. She then said that she had cancer and could eat very little,  45   the occasional ice-cream.
The next evening, I decided to buy two ice-creams. On the way to Dad’s room, I stopped in at the   46  woman’s room, and   47  her the ice-cream I’d bought for her. She was   48 stunned that I had thought of her, and   49  the gift with tears in her eyes. I spoke with her for a few minutes,  50  what was happening in my family and listened to her   51  story of pain and suffering. It was apparent that she did not   52  many visitors, and the ice-cream and our short chat meant a great deal to her.
I   53  the gesture a few days later, and this time was  54 with a huge hug.
I never even thought to ask her name, and never saw her again, but it made me realize that an act of   55  can be more rewarding when you give it, rather than receive it.

When people in the U.S. have company or when they're invited to (formal or informal)get-together, they usually make a point of trying to make others feel comfortable and relaxed. On the whole, they tend to be informal. Men shake hands, but usually only when they're introduced. Male friends and business associate who haven't seen each other in a while may shake hands when they say hello. Women usually don't shake hands when being introduced to each other. When a woman and man are introduced, shaking hands is up to the woman. Americans rarely shake hands to say goodbye, except on business occasions. American women are used to being independent. They are used to going to places by themselves, making their own money, and often living alone. Sometimes they will ask men for help, but they usually don't want to be protected. Since the women's movement started, it's not always clear whether women expect men to open doors or help them into their coats. American women may start conversations with men or even ask them to dance.
There are a lot of Americans who don't smoke or drink, and many who don't want people to do those things in their houses. It's always best to ask for permission before you, bring alcohol to a dinner or before you light up a cigarette, if you are with people you don't ,know very well. Non-smokers have become more militant (好戰(zhàn)的) about smoking in public places. Many restaurants, for example, have set up special areas for smokers.
House guests may bring gifts when they come to visit, and they often offer to help in some way. As a guest, you may want to ask your host or hostess if there's anything you can do to help in the kitchen. In many cases, the gesture is more important than actually helping.
【小題1】"…the gesture is more important than actually helping." Here "gesture" means_________.

A.態(tài)度B.話題C.姿態(tài)D.言行

A.men seldom shake handsB.women often shake hands
C.a(chǎn) woman decides if she will shake hands with a man
D.a(chǎn) man decides if he will shake hands with a woman
【小題3】___________is not mentioned in the passage.
A. How to visit an American family      B. When American women's movement started
C. American women are independentD Non-smokers hate smoking in public places.
【小題4】 Which one is NOT right? ________________.
A None of Americans want people to smoke or drink in their houses
B Many Americans don’t smoke or drink
C Many special areas for smokers have been set up in the US
D It’s best to ask before you smoke in America

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage .

According to one study, words send only 7 percent of a person’s message. Intonation (語調(diào)) and voice quality communicate 38 percent, and nonverbal(not using or involving words) cues (暗示) transmit a large 55 percent. That means people pick up more from nonverbal communication than from the words a person says. When studying a foreign culture then, it just makes sense to pay attention to how people use nonverbal cues.

Gestures consist of a major form of nonverbal communication. But often these gestures are culture-bound. For example, when the Maoris of New Zealand stick out (伸出) their tongue at someone, it is a sign of respect. When American schoolchildren make the same gesture, it means just the opposite. Also, Americans often indicate “OK” with their thumb and fore-finger touching to form a circle. The same gesture means “money” to the Japanese and “zero” to the French. For that reason, people in a foreign culture must use gestures with caution.

Another part of nonverbal communication is the one that you might not think about — space. When someone comes too close, he feels uncomfortable. When he knocks into someone, he feels obligated (有義務的) to apologize. But the size of a person’s “comfort zone” varies, depending on his cultural or ethnic origin. For example, in casual conversation, many Americans stand about four feet apart. People in Latin or Arabic cultures, instead, stand very close to each other and touch each other often.

Considering the effects of nonverbal communication, we never really stop communicating. How we walk, how we stand and how we use our hands all send a message to others. That’s why it’s possible to “read someone like a book”.

1. How does an American feel when an Arab stands too close to him ?(no more than 3 words)

2. What does the gesture “OK” mean in Japan?  (no more than 3 words)

4. Why should people in a foreign culture must use gestures with caution?(no more than 10 words)
