What I Think of Boxing as a Sport

Boxing is a popular sport. Newspapers, magazines and sports programmes on TV frequently cover boxing matches. It could be the toughest of all sports to survive. It takes boxers hours in the gym and years to develop the specific characteristics needed to be a great boxer. 【1】

It seems to me that some people, especially men, find it appealing because it is an aggressive sport. When they watch a boxing match, they can identify with the winning boxer. This gives them the feeling of being a winner themselves. 【2】 They do that because the boxer comes from their own country, and if “their” boxer loses, they often feel as if they have lost a fight themselves. It is a fact that many people have feelings of aggression from time to time, but they cannot show their aggression in their everyday lives. Watching a boxing match gives them a way of expressing it.

【3】 Although boxers wear gloves during the fights, and amateur boxers even have to wear helmets, a kind of strong hard hat, there have frequently been accidents in both professional and amateur boxing, sometimes with dramatic consequences. Boxers have suffered from head injuries, and, occasionally, fighters have even been killed as a result of being knocked out in the ring. 【4】 They are usually in the form of serious brain damage, even if a boxer has never been knocked out.

To conclude, I am personally not at all in favor of aggressive sports like boxing. 【5】 We can celebrate more men and women from non-aggressive sports as our heroes in our society. I believe that the world is aggressive enough already! Of course, people like competitive sports, and so do I, but I think that hitting other people in an aggressive way is not something that should be regarded as a sport.

A.However, boxing can be a very dangerous sport.

B.Sometimes fans are rooting for a particular boxer.

C.In boxing, fighters are required to hit a moving target.

D.Many fans are drawn to the sport because they love the competition.

E.Perhaps that is the reason why successful boxers are treated as big heroes.

F.I think it would be better if less time was given to aggressive sports on TV.

G.Besides, studies have shown that there are often long-term effects of boxing.

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項中,選出最佳選項。

The health-care economy is filled with unusual and even unique economic relationships. One of the least understood involves the peculiar roles of producer or “provider” and purchaser or “consumer” in the typical doctor-patient relationship. In most sectors of the economy, it is the seller who attempts to attract a potential buyer with various appealing factors of price, quality, and use, and it is the buyer who makes the decision. Such condition, however, is not common in most of the health-care industry.

In the health-care industry, the doctor-patient relationship is the mirror image of the ordinary relationship between producer and consumer. Once an individual has chosen to see a physician and even then there may be no real choice it is the physician who usually makes all significant purchasing decisions: whether the patient should return “next Wednesday”, whether X-rays are needed, whether drugs should be prescribed, etc. It is rare that a patient will challenge such professional decisions or raise in advance questions about price, especially when the disease is regarded as serious.

This is particularly significant in relation to hospital care. The physician must certify the need for hospitalization, determine what procedures will be performed, and announce when the patient may be discharged. The patient may be consulted about some of the decisions, but in general it is the doctor’s judgments that are final. Little wonder then that in the eye of the hospital it is the physician who is the real “consumer”. As a consequence, the medical staff represents the “power center” in hospital policy and decision-making, not the administration.

Although usually there are in this situation four identifiable participants— the physician, the hospital, the patient, and the payer (generally an insurance carrier or government)— the physician makes the essential decisions for all of them. The hospital becomes an extension of the physician; the payer generally meets most of the bills generated by the physician/hospital, and for the most part the patient plays a passive role. We estimate that about 75-80 percent of health-care choices are determined by physicians, not patients. For this reason, the economy directed at patients or the general is relatively ineffective.

【1】The author’s primary purpose in writing this passage is to ________.

A. urge hospitals to reclaim their decision-making authority

B. inform potential patients of their health-care rights

C. criticize doctors for exercising too much control over patients

D. analyze some important economic factors in health-care

【2】It can be inferred that doctors are able to determine hospital policies because ________.

A. most of patient’s bills are paid by his health insurance

B. it is doctors who generate income for the hospital

C. some patients might refuse to take their physician’s advice

D. a doctor is ultimately responsible for a patient’s health

【3】According to the author, when a doctor tells a patient to “return next Wednesday”, the doctor is in fact ________.

A. advising the patient to seek a second opinion

B. warning the patient that a hospital stay might be necessary

C. instructing the patient to buy more medical services

D. admitting that the first visit was ineffective

【4】The author is most probably leading up to ________.

A. a proposal to control medical costs

B. a study of lawsuits against doctors for malpractice

C. an analysis of the cause of inflation (通貨膨脹) in the US

D. a discussion of a new medical treatment

You can help your firm innovate(創(chuàng)新) by creating a culture in which all employees are actively encouraged to put forward ideas. But how do you get the best from people and encourage them to be at their most creative.

Stress the importance of creativity. 【1】 If they don’t understand innovation can keep your firm competitive, your efforts at encouraging creative thinking risk falling flat.

Make time for brainstorming. Find some time for new ideas to come out. For example, set aside time for brainstorming, hold regular group works hops(研討會) and arrange team days out. A team involved in a brainstorming session is likely to be more effective. 【2】You should also give individuals the space to reflect privately on their work if you think they need it.

Challenge the way staff work. 【3】 Ask people whether they have considered alternative ways of working and what might be achieved by doing things differently.

【4】Motivate individuals or teams who come up with winning ideas by actively recognizing creativity, for example through an award scheme. You can reward those who just have a rich flow of suggestions, regardless of whether they are put into action at work.

Act on ideas. Creative thinking is only worthwhile if it results in action. Provide the time and resources to develop and carry out those ideas worth acting on. 【5】In addition, the flow of ideas may well dry up if staff feel the process is pointless.

A. Reward creativity.

B. The problem is that our minds are lazy.

C. Be willing to make mistakes.

D. Make sure all your employees know that you want to hear their ideas.

E. Individuals within the team can test and improve the ideas together.

F. Encourage employees to keep looking at the way they approach their work.

G. Failure to do so means that your firm may fail to benefit from innovation.
