When raising children, the small things make big differences in development . Because children are people, not machines, different children need different things, and buying band name clothing and having the perfect haircut or the biggest collection of expensive toys are not the kind of attention that they need. These kinds of things will make children feel rejected and teach them that material things and appearance are more important than love.

Children need the attention from their parents. The areas of their lives and the abilities that get the most attention will develop the most. If the majority of parental attention is given to the way they stand or to finishing tasks, these areas will become more developed. When parents focus on finding faults, children will eventually take in all of that criticism. These methods often lead to unmotivated children with low self-esteem(尊重).

Children need attention to be given to the details of their lives. They need encouragement from their parents. Statements like, “It makes me happy when you play nicely with your brother” will make a child feel good . Identify the specific talent, how it is used, and your reaction to it. Train the young minds to search for their talents with the same kind of attention to the details that may have previously been devoted to fault-finding. It also helps to identify personal qualities to praise rather than external ones based on appearance.

Focusing on the details when children do good things is important. They need to know exactly what they did was good and how it made you feel .Parents often spend too much time looking for faults. When parents focus on good things, it results in motivated children with high self-esteem. If the devil is in the details ,perhaps the saints圣人 are also.

Taiwanese fishing boats that sailed to the Diaoyu Islands to protest Japan's "purchase" of part of the islands completed their voyage Tuesday morning and have set sail for home.

Local media reported that the boats finished their protest at 9:15 a.m. and are expected to return to a port in northeast Taiwan's Yilan county at noon Wednesday.

Although the boats originally numbered 75,they were joined at sea by other boats from different parts of Taiwan, raising the total number to about 100 vessels. Organizers said the voyage was made to protect Taiwanese fishing rights in nearby waters and to protest Japan's "purchase" of part of the Diaoyu Islands.

The Japanese government announced a plan to "purchase" part of the islands earlier this month despite repeated protests from the Chinese government. The action aroused demonstrations across China as well as consumers' boycott of Japanese products in recent weeks. Local authorities in Taiwan have also protested the move.

"Japan's purchase and nationalization of China's Diaoyu Islands are putting China-Japan economic and trade ties at risk due to man-made factors." An official spokesman from Beijing warned .

China-Japan economic and trade relations was back on track in 1952 when the two countries signed their first non-governmental trade agreement. Currently, China has been Japan's largest trade partner since 2007 while Japan is China’s fourth largest trade partner, after the EU, U.S. and the ASEAN. Meanwhile, China is the biggest destination for Japanese exports and biggest source of imports. In the first half of 2012, Japan's exports to China totaled 73.54 billion U.S. dollars, down 6.2 percent from the same period last year, while its import from China was 91.29 billion U.S. dollars, up 7 percent from the same period last year.

Now, China-Japan economic and trade relations are at a crossroads. Negotiation could be the way out of the rift.

1.Why are China-Japan economic and trade relations at a crossroads?

A.Because Taiwan fishing boats sailed to the island to protest Japan.

B.Because Taiwanese are deprived of their fishing right.

C.Because Japan is not China's largest trade partner.

D.Because Japan announced to purchase China's Diaoyu Islands.

2.We can infer from the passage that _____.

A.About 100 boats joined the original team later.

B.Negotiation will bring both countries out of the conflict.

C.Japan's “purchase”has cast a shadow on China-Japan export and import.

D.Japan's exports to China totaled 78 billion U.S. dollars in 2011.

3.What does the underlined word “rift” in the last paragraph mean?

A.gap              B.conflict           C.crash             D.quarrel

4.What is the main idea of this passage?

A.Japan declared to purchase China's Diaoyu Islands.

B.Japan's purchase of Diaoyu Islands aroused nationwide protest.

C.The Diaoyu Islands belong to China!

D.China plays an important part in Japan's economy development.

Have you thanked your grandma today? You might want to consider it. A recent study found that kids live longer when a grandmother takes part in their daily lives.

Most animals die soon after their childbearing years are over. Women, however, often live for many years after they stop having kids.

To try to understand why, researchers from Finland looked at birth and death records of two communities from the 18th and 19th centuries, one in Finland and one in Canada. In these communities, 537 Finnish women and 3,290 Canadian women were grandmothers who had lived past the age of 50.

For every decade they lived beyond 50, the researchers found that the women ended up with an average of two extra grandkids. It didn’t matter what the differences in health or living conditions were between the two communities or from family to family.

Grandchildren were also more likely to live into adulthood if their grandmothers were alive when they were born. If their grandmothers were younger than 60 at the time, that was even better. The study also found that women had children 2 to 3 years earlier if their own mothers were still alive at that time than those whose mothers had died.

The researchers suggested that grandmothers have provided important assistance in raising their grandchildren for at least the past 200,000 years. As a result, they helped extend everyone’s lifespan.

So, don’t take your grandma for granted!

McDonald’s has been bothered by people blaming it for making them fat and by animal-rights protesters(抗議者),  so it has responded with a good deed. It is telling its main meat suppliers to slowly stop using antibiotics (抗生素) by 2004.

The fast food chain is one of the biggest US meat buyers and it may be causing an end to the age of dangerous overuse of antibiotics. The cattle industry began using the drugs in the 1950s and soon became a practice. Antibiotics can help fatten animals. Animals fed by antibiotics grow faster and so space is saved. That helps solve the problem of crowded condition on farms.

Today, 70 percent of all antibiotics used in the US are mixed into animal feed. That amounts to 24 million pounds of drugs a year and good earnings for the companies that make the drugs.

Humans eat the meat of animals fed by antibiotics regularly, and bacteria (細(xì)菌) in humans tend to develop immunity (免疫力) to antibiotics over time. So, doctors have to use larger amounts of antibiotics to cure bacterial diseases. Even more worrying, cattle that have been fattened with antibiotics can spread other infections that resist antibiotics to humans. The first time they are used, antibiotics wipe out most of their bacteria. But the few that survive begin growing toward drug resistance. And they may become more deadly in the process.

The medical magzine Clinical Infectious Diseases has concluded that agricultural use of antibiotics “increase the number, cruelty and duration (持續(xù)時(shí)間) of infections.” McDonald’s worked closely with the nonprofit group US Environmental Defence and other organizations over the last year to try to cut out antibiotics. It is right to insist that farmers need to end a practice that harms animals and humans. With its 30,000 restaurants in 118 countries, the chain has real influence in the cattle industry.

If consumers respond favorably, the rest of the fast food industry will no doubt follow. Obviously, there’s great publicity value in the McDonald’s action. This gives the company an image of environmental concern(關(guān)心). It also removes customers’ focus from the fat and salt problem of its food. So the praise for stopping meat antibiotics is entirely worth the effort.

1. To answer people’s criticizing, McDonald’s has ______.

A. paid for the loss of the customers           B. stopped the practice for some time

C. turned to the law for help                       D. taken some measures to satisfy them

2. The basic goal that the cattle industry uses antibiotics lies in ________.

A. reducing costs   B. the popular taste      C. preventing diseases    D. its high nutrition

3. Paragraph 4 mainly tells us ______.

       A. the animals using antibiotics to speed up weight have two bad effects

       B. overuse of antibiotics can cause resistance of antibiotics to humans

       C. bacteria in humans will affect the immunity to antibiotics

       D. antibiotics might be stopped using in human life

4. The author _______ stopping the use of antibiotics when raising animals.

       A. is for                B. is against                  C. is uncertain about D. shows no opinion of
