Grandpa Nybakken loved life—especially when he could play a trick on somebody. At those times, his large Norwegian frame shook with laughter while he pretended innocent surprise, exclaiming, “Oh, forevermore!” But on a cold Saturday in downtown Chicago, Grandpa felt that God played a trick on him, and grandpa wasn’t laughing.
Grandpa worked as a carpenter. On this particular day, he was building some boxes for the clothes his church was sending to an orphanage abroad. On his way home, he reached into his shirt pocket to find his glasses, but they were gone. He remembered putting them there that morning, so he drove back to the church. His search proved fruitless.
Suddenly, he realized what happened. The glasses had slipped out of his pocket unnoticed and fallen into one of the boxes, which he had nailed shut. His brand new glasses were heading for China!
The Great Depression was at its height, and Grandpa had six children. He had spent twenty dollars for those glasses that very morning.
“It’s not fair,” he told God as he drove home in frustration. “I’ve been very faithful in giving of my time and money to your work, and now this.”
Several months later, the director of the orphanage was on vacation in the United States. He wanted to visit all the churches that supported him, so he came to speak on Sunday night at my grandfather’s small church in Chicago. Grandpa and his family sat in their usual seats among the small congregation(教堂會眾).
“But most of all,” he said, “I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year.”
“Even if I had the money, there was simply no way of replacing those glasses. Along with not being able to see well, I experienced headaches every day, so my co-workers and I were much in prayer about this. Then your boxes arrived. When my staff removed the covers, they found a pair of glasses lying on the top.” After a long pause, he continued, “Folks, when I tried on the glasses, it was as though they had been custom-made just for me! I want to thank you for being a part of that!”
The people listened, happy for the amazing glasses. But the director surely must have confused their church with another, they thought, there were no glasses on their list of items to be sent overseas.
But sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, an ordinary carpenter realized the Master Carpenter had used him in an extraordinary way.
(  ) 56. Which of the following is NOT true about Grandpa Nybakken according to the passage?
A. He was an outgoing man and held an active attitude towards life.
B. He had a large family to support.
C. He was a carpenter working in the church.
D. He was a loyal Christian.
(  ) 57. Grandpa spent much of his time and money in church mainly to ________.
A. help the priest do some religious work
B. help those people in need
C. make some woodwork for the church
D. seek some help from God
(  ) 58. The people in the church but Grandpa felt confused at what the director said because ________.
A. Grandpa didn’t tell the director that he was the owner of the glasses
B. the director wanted to return the glasses even though he liked it
C. the director could not get such glasses in their own country
D. the glasses were not included in the donation list
(  ) 59. Who does “the Master Carpenter” in the last paragraph probably refer to?
A. Grandpa’s master.                   B. One of Grandpa’s friends.
C. God.                      D. Grandpa’s co-worker.
(  ) 60. Which can be the best title of the passage?
A. Grandfather’s life                      B. The Helpful Donation
C. The Perfect Mistake                     D. An Impressive Speech
56. C。57. B。58. D。59. C。60. C。

56. C。 A選項根據(jù)第一段可以判斷,B選項根據(jù)“Grandpa had six children”可以判斷,D選項根據(jù)“I’ve been very faithful in giving of my time and money to your work”可以判斷。
58. D。根據(jù) “there were no glasses on their list of items to be sent oversea” 可以判斷。
59. C。答案與文章第一段中的“Grandpa felt that God played a trick on him”相照應,最后一段中的“an ordinary carpenter”指的就是祖父,“the Master Carpenter”指的是God,耶穌也曾是木匠。
60. C。根據(jù)文章的描述,祖父因為不小心把眼鏡掉進了運送募捐物品的箱子中,然而這副眼鏡卻給了受捐贈者極大的幫助。所以這是一次“美麗的失誤”。

A punctual person is in the habit of doing a thing at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment.
The unpunctual man, on one hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time. He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name. A lost thing may be found again, but lost time can never be regained. Time is more valuable than material things. In fact, time is life itself. The unpunctual man is for ever wasting and mismanaging his most valuable asset (財產(chǎn)) as well as other’s. The unpunctual person is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters, or return calls or keep appointments promptly. But the man who really has a great deal to do is very careful of his time and seldom complains of want of it. He knows that he can not get through his huge amount of work unless he faithfully keeps every piece of work when it has to be attended to.
Failure to be punctual in keeping one’s appointments is the sign of disrespect towards others. If a person is invited to dinner and arrives later than the appointed time, he keeps all the other guests waiting for him. Usually this will be regarded as a great disrespect to the host and all other guests present.
Unpunctuality, moreover, is very harmful when it comes to do one’s duty, whether public or private. Imagine how it would be if those who are put in charge of important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time. A man who is known to be habitually unpunctual is never trusted by his friends or fellow men.
小題1:What does the author think is the main difference between a punctual person and an unpunctual person?
A.A punctual person does everything ahead of time while an unpunctual person does everything behind schedule.
B.A punctual person does everything at the right time while an unpunctual person seldom does anything at the correct time.
C.A punctual person has a lot of appointments while an unpunctual person has few appointments.
D.A punctual person has much time to do everything while an unpunctual person has little time to do anything.
小題2: According to the passage, the main reason that a person is always unpunctual is that _______.
A.he has more work to do than other people
B.he is always in a hurry when he works
C.he doesn’t care much about time
D.he always mismanages and wastes his time
小題3:According to the third paragraph, when you are invited to dinner, you should arrive there _______.
A.a(chǎn)fter other guests have arrived
B.before all other guests
C.a(chǎn)t the appointed time
D.a(chǎn)fter the host has got things ready
小題4:Which of the following statements best describes the harm of unpunctuality?
A.If you are an unpunctual person, you cannot be in charge of any important task.
B.If your friends know that you are unpunctual, they may not see you again.
C.Unpunctuality may bring about heavy losses for both public and private affairs.
D.Unpunctuality may make you miss a lot of appointments and lose friends.

Saturday, October 7th, was a marathon of sad tasks for Anna Politkovskaya. Two weeks earlier, her father, a retired official in the department of foreign affairs, had died of a heart attack as he emerged from the Moscow Metro while on his way to visit Politkovskaya’s mother, Raisa Mazepa, in the hospital. She had just been diagnosed(診斷) with cancer and was too weak even to attend her husband’s funeral. “Your father will forgive me, because he knows that I have always loved him,” she told Anna and her sister, Elena Kudimova, the day he was buried. A week later, she had an operation and since then Anna and Elena had been taking turns helping her deal with her grief.
Politkovskaya was supposed to spend the day at the hospital, but her twenty-six-year-old daughter, who was pregnant, had just moved into Politkovskaya’s apartment, on Lesnaya Street, while her own place was being prepared for the baby. “Anna had so much on her mind,” Elena Kudimova told me when we met in London, before Christmas. “And she was trying to finish her article.” Politkovskaya was a special reporter for the small newspaper Novaya Gazeta, and, like most of her work, the piece focused on the terror that can be seen all over the southern republic of Chechnya. This time, she had been trying to report repeated cruel acts done by people faithful to the Prime Minister, Ramzan Kadyrov, who are in favour of Russia. In the past seven years, Politkovskaya had written dozens of accounts of life during wartime; many had been collected in her book “A Small Corner of Hell: reports from Chechnya.” Politkovskaya was far more likely to spend time in a hospital than on a battlefield, and her writing bore frequent witness to robbery, and the uncontrolled cruelty of life in a place that few other Russians—and almost no other reporters—cared to think about.
41. Politkovskaya’s father died of ______.
A. tiredness          B. a heart disease        C. an attack       D. an accident
42. From the text we know that Raisa Mazepa ______.
A. didn’t love her husband
B. didn’t attend her husband’s funeral
C. was having an operation the day her husband was buried
D. was too sad to attend her husband’s funeral
43. The underlined word “emerged” most likely means ______.
A. came out        B. went into      C. disappeared      D. left for
44. How many family members of Anna are mentioned in the passage?
A. Three.           B. Four         C. Five            D. Six
45. Which of the following words can best describe Politkovskaya’s character?
A. Curious         B. easy-going     C. careless          D. responsible

Doctors say obesity, also known as severe overweight,is a complex condition.A doctor may advise medical interventions(醫(yī)療干預) in addition to changes in behavior. But experts say the more successful weightloss plans include a wellbalanced diet and exercise.
People who want to avoid weight gain have to balance the number of calories they eat with the number of calories they use.To lose weight, you can reduce the number of calories you take in,or increase the number you use,or both.Experts at the National Institutes of Health say to lose weight,a person should do some moderate or intensive physical exercise most days of the week. This could include fast walking, sports or strength training.
A recent study looked at four of the most popular dieting plans in the United States.Researchers at Stanford University studied more than three hundred overweight women, mostly in their thirties or forties. Each woman went on one of the four plans:Atkins,The Zone,Ornish or LEARN.The women attended diet classes and received written information about the food plans. At the end of a year, the women on the Atkins diet had lost the most, more than four and a half kilograms on average.
Christopher Gardner led the study, reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association. He said the Atkins diet may be more successful because of its simple message to lower the intake of sugar. Also,he said the advice to increase protein in the diet leads to more satisfying meals.
But last week, another report suggested that only a small minority of people have longterm success in dieting.Researchers at the University of California found that most dieters regained their lost weight within five years. And often they gained back even more. But those who kept the weight off generally were the ones who exercised.

Christian Eijkman, a Dutch doctor, left the Netherlands for the island of Java. Many people on the island had a disease called beri-beri. He was going there to try and find a cure.
At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ (細菌) caused beri-beri. He raised some chickens. He didn’t eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate — refined white rice (精煉米). When he fed them with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery — that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins (維生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a person’s food.
