In the summer of 1848, in Guatemala, a man called Ambrosio Tut went into the jungle, as he did almost every day. Tut was a gum-collector(樹膠采集者),1.(look) for gum in the jungle. To do this, he had to climb the trees. 2.this particular day, he got to the top of one tree and something caught his eye. He looked out across the trees and saw the tops of some old buildings.

Tut didn't really know what he had seen but he knew it was something 3.(specially). He ran to tell the local governor, and together they 4.(walk)into the jungle. There they found Tikal(蒂卡爾),the city that the Mayans (瑪雅A) had built many hundreds of years before. The two men saw temples and pyramids, squares and houses, and places 5.kings had lived when the Mayan people ruled the region.

For a long time before that day, local people had known that somewhere in the jungle there was an old Mayan city, 6.no one had seen it for centuries. 7.200 and 900 AD, the city of Tikal had been the center of Mayan civilization in the region, but then the Mayans left 8.─nobody knows why! After 1000 AD, the jungle began to cover it and people forgot that it was there.

Seven years before Tut looked out for the trees, two British explorers had gone to Guatemala and had written a report about Mayan treasures in the jungle, but they didn't mention Tikal. Even 9.(early)than this, local Indians had told European travelers about a great city 10.(hide) in the trees, but no one would listen to them. Now the lost city had been found again, and archaeologists (考古學(xué)家) went there immediately to see it.

【解析】

試題分析:本文主要講述了一個叫做Ambrosio Tut的橡膠收集者在雨林中發(fā)現(xiàn)了一個古老的瑪雅城市,作者對這座城市做了相關(guān)介紹。。

1. (look) for gum in the jungle這個句子中逗號后面的部分作主語Tut的定語,這個句子意為Tut是一個在雨林中尋找樹膠的樹膠采集者,因Tut和動詞look構(gòu)成主動關(guān)系。故填looking

2. this particular day意為在這特殊的一天里,是具體指某個時間。故填on

3.

4. (walk)into the jungle可知and前后時態(tài)保持一致,前面用的是一般過去式,所以后面也應(yīng)用一般過去式,walk的過去式為walked。故填walked

5. kings had lived when the Mayan people ruled the region這個句子中,kings had...ruled the region places的定語,而先行詞places為地點(diǎn)名詞,所以用表地點(diǎn)的副詞where,一般情況下表地點(diǎn)時,where=介詞+which。故填where / in which

6. no one had seen it for centuries.中空的前后都是完整的句子,故填連詞;前面是這有一個古老的瑪雅城市,后面意為幾個世紀(jì)都沒人發(fā)現(xiàn)它,前后句意相反,所以用轉(zhuǎn)折連詞承接。故填but

7. 200 and 900 AD意為在200公元到900公元之間,between..and..:在..之間。且因空在句首,首字母需大寫。故填Between

8.68 ─nobody knows why!可知Tikal是城市中心但那時人們離開了這兒:沒有人知道原因。left缺少賓語由于前面出現(xiàn)了Tikal這個名詞,所以為了簡介和避免重復(fù),可用代詞it/there來代替Tikal。故填it / there

9.

10. (hide) in the trees意為當(dāng)?shù)氐挠〉诎踩烁嬖V歐洲的游客樹林里面隱藏著一個很棒的城市, (hide) in the trees作city的定語,city與hide構(gòu)成被動關(guān)系,故用過去分詞作定語,其過去分詞形式為hidden。故填hidden

I log onto a computer at the doctor's office to say I have arrived and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room.

There, a robotic nurse directs me onto a device and then takes my blood pressure. Some time later, in steps the doctor, who is also a robot. He notes down my symptoms and gives me a prescription (處方). I pay for my visit using a credit card machine and return home without having met another human being.

When I call my dentist's office and actually get a human being on the line, I am thrilled. And when I see the introduction of yet more self-service checkout stations at the grocery store, I feel like shouting, "When it comes to cashiers, make mine human, please!"

After all, human cashiers sometimes give you a store coupon (優(yōu)惠券) for items you are buying. Even more than that, real-life cashiers often take an interest in particularly cute children, which can brighten a young mother's day. A cashier may also show compassion (同情)for an elderly person struggling to get that last penny out of her purse.

What technological device would do any of this? I don't want to go back to the Stone Age, but I'm also worried about a world run by machines. Sometimes when you're chatting with someone, you discover things you need to know. Maybe a receptionist needs prayers said for a sick child. Maybe a salesperson can offer a bit of encouragement to a customer who is feeling tired.

Machines can be efficient and cost-effective and they often get the job done just fine. But they lack an element so important to everyday life.

Call it the spirit, the soul or the heart. It is something no machine will ever have. It is being human that prompts us to smile at others, which may be what they need at that moment.

1.What's the author's purpose in writing the first two paragraphs?

A. To indicate high technology can make our future life very easy.

B. To describe a possible future scene where robots take control of our life.

C. To warn readers of the possible dangers of robotic nurses and doctors.

D. To predict how technology can affect the way we see a doctoring the future.

2.Why does the author prefer being served by humans rather than by robots?

A. Robots are indifferent and emotionless.

B. Robots can't provide efficient services.

C. Robots don't offer to give store coupons.

D. Robots are unable to do a job as well as humans.

3.What's the author's attitude towards machines?

A. He wishes one day they would come to life.

B. He is absolutely against their existence in his life.

C. He doesn't like they get involved in his life too much.

D. He is afraid they would take the place of human beings.

I was going to Paris, which I’d always wanted to see. But now I was frightened to travel alone. I arrived at the train station in Paris. I hadn’t spoken my college French for twenty years. On my first metro ride, I came across an incompetent(不勝任的)thief. I just stared at him, and he stopped his hand from my purse and disappeared into the crowd. Somewhere in this confusing city was my hotel hidden, but the directions suddenly weren’t easy to find. When I finally found the hotel, my heart was beating heavily, and I was sweating like a basketball player. I couldn’t stay. Could I? The wallpaper looked like it had been through a fire. The bathroom was downstairs, and the window looked out onto the brick wall of another building. Welcome to Paris. I sincerely wanted to die. I missed my friends. I was entering my third week away from home and my kids, and I had arrived in the most romantic city in the world, alone, lonely and frightened.

The most important thing I did in Paris happened at that moment. I knew that if I didn’t go out, right then, and find a place to have dinner, I would hide in this small room my entire time in Paris. I might never learn to enjoy the world as a single individual. So I went out. Evening in Paris was light and pleasant. I walked along a path, listening to birds sing, watching children float toy boats in a huge fountain. No one seemed to be in a hurry. Paris was beautiful. And I was here alone and suddenly not lonely. My sense of accomplishment overcoming my fear and weakness had left me feeling free. I wore out two pairs of shoes during my week’s stay in Paris. I did everything there was to do, and it was the greatest week of my European vacation. I returned home, becoming a believer in the power of traveling alone. How often do you let other people like a bad driver, a rude waiter, or an angry boss, change your mood (情緒)?

Sixteen years ago I learned a lesson. I got in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane (車道) when all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver used his brakes (車閘), the tires made a loud noise, and at the very last moment our car stopped just 3cm from the back of the other car.

I couldn’t believe it. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head around and he started shouting at us. I couldn’t believe it!

My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. So, I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy could have killed us!” And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck”. He said, “Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of anger and disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they look for a place to dump (傾倒) it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on you.

So I started thinking how often I let Garbage Trucks run right over me and how often I take their garbage and spread it to other people.

I began to see Garbage Trucks. I see the load people are carrying. I see them coming to dump it. And like my taxi driver, I don’t take it personally. I just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on.

A. He was caught in a traffic jam.

B. He had a fight with his taxi driver.

A. waste materials B. poor habits

C. the bad mood D. great pressure

4. How did the author learn to deal with Garbage Trucks?

B. Call the police for help.

C. Smile and move on.
