【題目】Islands in the world are famous for different things. But Hawaii is special for its variety of features. Beautiful sandy beaches, active volcanoes (火山), a great canyon (溪谷) and special history and culture add up to create its famously romantic atmosphere.

Formed by volcanoes at the bottom of the sea, the Hawaii islands are like a necklace in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 6,000 kilometres off the west coast of Mexico. There are eight main islands in the group, including Hawaii (or Big Island), Maui, Kahoolawe, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau.

The youngest and biggest island, also called Hawaii was formed 430,000 years ago and is still growing. Kauai, the oldest was formed 5.1 million years ago. For tourists, the sight of the lava(熔巖) that still flows from some of the volcanoes down to the sea, is a major attraction.

Hawaii is the newest and smallest state in the US. In 1900, the islands joined the US. In modern history, it will always be remembered for the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese air force in 1941.

About 1,000 years ago, the islands were settled by Polynesians (波利尼西亞人), Captain James Cook led the first group of Westerners there in 1778.

Native Hawaiians have a special culture and language. Although nowadays English is the official language of Hawaii, folk music and dancing are still widely practiced. The traditional dance of the islands is the hula, a Hawaiian word that means dance.

Hawaii's reputation for romance was spread when Hollywood started to use its typical music in movies in the 1960's.

Today, Hawaii is famous for its mix of cultures. Chinese, Japanese and Filipinos all live there.

Chinese arrived in the islands as early as the late 18th century. Dr. Sun Yatsen, the famous Chinese revolutionary, grew up there.

Everyone in Hawaii is a member of an ethnic minority (少數(shù)民族) and generally they exist in a pleasant harmony (和諧) of races and cultures.

【題目】Since his early childhood, G. A. Minton has always been a faithful fan of science fiction and horror. Whenever a scary movie was playing at the local theatre, he was there in attendance with his friends, loudly screaming in terror.

In his everyday life, Minton likes playing the game of golf most, having lettered on his high school golf team. In addition to writing, he also enjoys reading, traveling, fishing, swimming, working out, listening to hard rock music, and watching great movies-especially those about horror, science fiction, mystery and comedy.

Strangely enough, it was only after Minton was knocked down by a drunk driver and suffered a closed-head injury that he developed a new found passion for writing. 【題目】 Many people find that music lifts their spirits. Now a new research shows that music therapy (療法) can be a useful treatment for depression.

The finding that music therapy offers a real medical benefit to depression sufferers comes from a review by the Cochrane Collaboration, a non-profit group that reviews health care issues. Some studies looked at the effects of providing music therapy to patients who were receiving drug treatment for depression. Others compared music therapy to traditional talk therapy. In four out of five of the trials, music therapy worked better at easing depression symptoms than therapies that did not employ music, the researchers found.

“While the evidence came from a few small studies, it suggests that this is an area that is well worth further investigation.” said lead author Anna Maratos. Ms. Maratos notes that music therapy might be particularly useful for adolescents who may reject a traditional form of counseling. Some older patients also may not be comfortable talking about their feelings but do tend to express themselves through songs.

There are two main types of music therapy. Sometimes, a therapist will listen to music with a patient and talk about the feelings or memories that it arouses. In another form, the therapist is a skilled musician and will improvise (即興創(chuàng)作) music with the patient. If the patient doesn’t play an instrument, he or she might be given a simple percussion (擊打) instrument and the therapist will play along.

Other studies have shown a benefit from music therapy in the treatment for dementia, learning disabilities, strokes and pain management during labor and birth. The problem is that there isn’t very much high-quality research. “It doesn’t easily attract serious research funding. It’s difficult to do high-quality, large-scale trials.” said Ms. Maratos.

1Which of the following treatments is NOT mentioned in the research?

A.Drug treatment.B.Talk therapy.C.Music therapy.D.Play therapy.

2What’s the attitude of Anna Maratos to music therapy?

A.Positive.B.Negative.C.Indifferent.D.Neutral.

3According to the passage, music therapy might not be beneficial to a patient of _______.

A.depressionB.learning disabilitiesC.heart attackD.strokes

4We can learn from the passage _______.

A.a middle-aged patient won’t benefit from music therapy

B.patients using music therapy must be able to play an instrument

C.only patients suffering from depression benefit from music therapy

D.high-quality research on the effects of music therapy is limited by funding
