The storage of classified (分類的) research at all 24 labs run by the US Department of Energy was shut down this week after officials decided that the security (安全) problems recently found at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico might also exist elsewhere.

Several computer disks went missing at Los Alamos earlier this month, forcing Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham to stop all work at the lab until the problems are found out. As of 26 July, two missing disks had still not been found, and 15 employees had been suspended in connection with the disappearance.

Now all energy labs will stop doing classified research that involves(需要) removable storage devices --- such as computer disks ---  until all the devices are given explanation for and new procedures are in place for monitoring their handling by laboratory employees.

"While we have no evidence that the problems being investigated are present elsewhere, we have a responsibility to take all necessary action to prevent such problems, "Abraham said on 23 July.

The shut-down isn't quite as dramatic(驚人的)as it sounds, experts say. Only two labs will be seriously affected: Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in  California. Together with Los Alamos, these two labs conduct the most part of the country's nuclear weapon programmes. At Livermore, 876 employees will be suspended during the storage of some 12,000 items of classified removable material.

At other labs, far fewer people will be affected. "The impact (影響) should be the smallest," says Martha Krebs, former director of the energy department's science office.

Why was the storage of classified research at all 24 labs shut down?

A. Because the security problems might be present elsewhere.

B. Because the security problems existed elsewhere.

C. Because two missing computer disks had still not be found.

D. Because officials decided to stop doing such research.

How many labs conduct the country's nuclear weapon programmes according to the text?

A. About 24. B. Only 2. C. More than 2. D. Over 15.

The underlined word "suspended"in the second paragraph probably means "______”.

A. hung from above  B. stopped from holding a position C. doubted D. fired

It can be inferred from the text that _____.

A. the computer disks must have been stolen by terrorists

B. the people living in the United States have little security

C. the United States is a country whose security is very bad

D. the missing of the computer disks caused great fear among Americans

A nine-year-old kid was sitting at his desk when suddenly there was a puddle (水坑) between his feet and the front of his trousers was wet. He thought his heart was going to stop because he couldn’t possibly imagine how this had happened. It had never happened before, and he knew that when the boys found out, especially Jack,  he would never hear the end of it. When the girls found out, especially Martha and Jackie, they would never speak to him again as long as he lived.

He prayed this prayer, “Dear God, I need help now! Five minutes from now I’m dead meat!” He looked up from his prayer and here came the teacher with a look in her eyes that said he had been discovered. As the teacher was walking toward him, a classmate named Susie was carrying a goldfish bowl full of water. Susie lost her balance in front of the teacher and dumped (倒) the bowl of water in the boy’s lap. The boy pretended to be angry, but all the while was saying to himself, “Thank you, Lord!”

Now all of a sudden, instead of being the object of ridicule (嘲笑), the boy was the object of sympathy (同情). The teacher rushed him downstairs and gave him gym shorts to put on while his trousers dried out. All the other children were on their hands and knees cleaning up around his desk. Martha even gave him her own candy. The sympathy was wonderful. But as life would have it, the ridicule that should have been his had been turned to someone else—Susie. She tried to help, but they told her to get out.

When school was over, the boy walked over to Susie and whispered, “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?” Susie whispered back, “I wet my trousers once, too!”

Martha had been working for Miller Laboratories for two years, but she was not happy there. Nothing significant had happened in the way of promotions or salary increases. Martha felt that her supervisor, a younger and less experienced person than she, did not like her. In fact, the supervisor often said unpleasant things to her.

One day, while talking with her friend Maria, she mentioned how discouraged she was. Maria gave her the name of a cousin of hers who was director of Human Resources Department for a large chemical company. Martha called him the next day and set up an interview on her lunch hour.

During the interview, Mr. Petri said, “You’re just the kind of person we need here. You’re being wasted in your other job. Give me a call in a day or two. I’m sure we can find a place for you in our organization.” Martha was so happy she almost danced out of the building.

That afternoon, Ruth Kenny, her supervisor, saw that Martha had come in ten minutes late from her lunch hour and she said, “Oh, so you finally decided to come back to work today?”

This was the last straw. She could not take another insult. Besides, Mr. Petri was right: she was being wasted in this job.

“Look,” she said angrily, “if you don’t like the way I work, I don’t need to stay here. I’ll go where I’m appreciated! Good-bye!” She took up her things and stormed out of the office.

That night she called Maria and told her what had happened and then asked Maria, “What do you think?”

“Well,” said Maria carefully, “are you sure about the other job?”

“Well, not exactly, but…”

Maria continued, “Will you be able to get a recommendation from Mrs. Kenny if you need one?”

“A recommendation?…from Mrs. Kenny?” hesitated Martha, in a worried tone.

“Martha, I hope you didn’t burn your bridges.” Maria said. “I think I would have handled it differently.”

The Children’s Hour

The Children’s Hour by Lillian Hellman is a striking play about the power of a lie. Karen Wright (Keira Knightley) and Martha Dobie (Elisabeth Moss) run a girls’ boarding school in the 1930s New England. When an angry student starts a rumour that the two headmistresses are having a lesbian (女同性戀者) affair, it gradually destroys the women’s careers, relationships and lives. The Children’s Hour is an upsetting story of cheat, shame and courage.

Banned in London and several cities across America, The Children’s Hour received its world opening on Broadway in 1934. Generations on, its exploration of a culture of fear remains remarkably relevant.

56.

People have expressed themselves thrugh the movements, steps, and rhythms of dance since the beginning of time. They have prayed and celebrated their victories through dance. People have mourned their dead and healed their sick through dance, the language of the body.

57.

Today there are many kinds of dancing. For example, there is folk dancing, ballet dancing, and modern dancing. Modern dance, which began in the early 1900s, is a very expressionistic dance. Modern dancers follow no set pattern. Rather, they create their own movements to match the feeling they are trying to express. But modern dance means more than just selt-expression.

58.

Martha Graham is one of the world’s greatest modern dancers. As a young dancer, she studied with some of the founders of the modern dance movement. Influnced by many different kinds of dancing, Martha Graham developed her own personal dance style. She later formed her own dance company and school in the New York City. The following are some of her feelings about her art.

59.

The modern dancer’s costume is an important part of his or her dance. There is always some reason why a dance costume should be a certain color or an outfit cut in a certain way. The reason comes out of the dance itself. Unlike a ballet costume, a modern dance costume is left of the dancers’ art except the pictures and the memories.

60.

Dances come from something deep within a person. That something cannot be expressed with words--- it must be told through movement. Because dance expresses emotions, it affects the mind and the body. Dance should not be taken apart interpreted-dance must be experienced.
