Scott Langteau has this message for kids: Spend less time playing video games.

It’s a message that many a mom and dad have tried to impress upon many a youngster (and some not-so-youngsters) who spend perhaps a bit too much time with game controllers in hand.

But the 40-year-old Langteau isn’t a parent. He’s a veteran(老手) of the video game industry --- one who played producer on three “Medal of Honor” games and co-founded his own game development company.

Langteau has just published a children’s book called “Sofa Boy”, which tells the story of a kid who spends too much time sitting on the couch with controller held in hand and the rather terrible consequences that follow.

It’s a fairy tale picked straight from Langteau’s own experiences as a kid with a fondness for video games and his own bouts with a bit of game addiction. But first, Langteau would like to make one thing clear: “I’m not saying that you shouldn’t play video games.I think video games are great.I think they do great things for kids.” Instead, Langteau says his book is all about a little something called “moderation(克制).”

“It’s about being well rounded,” he says.“Just like with anything else, we all need to make sure that there’s a variety in what we do.”

Video gamers can be rather bad-tempered when it comes to accepting criticism about their favorite entertainment. And understandably so.After all, most people who go around talking about the dangers of playing video games tend to be outsiders --- people who don’t play video games and certainly don’t understand that they can be a valuable and healthy form of entertainment.

But Langteau and “Soft Boy” seem to be in a unique position to deliver a message of gaming moderation that the young game masses might actually listen to.After all, this is a man who understands what it means to be a kid with a passion for games. His early experience has taught him a lesson.

Which of the following is true of the book “Sofa Boy”?

A.The boy in the book is not an addict on games.

B.The book describes a veteran on games.

C.The boy in the book wins a medal for games.

D.The book tells of the writer’s own story.

A.Langteau advises the young not to play games

B.playing video games is of no benefit to kids

C.playing video games ruins the future of kids

D.Langteau advises the young play games within limits

By saying “It’s about being well rounded”, Langteau thinks __________.

A.games should be viewed from all sides

B.games do great things for kids

C.gamers are usually fat and round

D.gamers are to blame for their behaviors

It happened to me recently that I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s DreamsfromMyFather and how it had changed my views of the current US president. The person I was talking to agreed with me that it was,in his words,“a wonderfully written book”. However,he then proceeded to talk about Mr Obama in a way that suggested he had no idea of his background at all.I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.

And it seems that he is not the only one.Clearly two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t.In the World Book Day survey,DreamsfromMyFather is at number 9.The survey lists top ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading. As I’m not one to lie too often,I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire ten books. But I am pleased to say that I have read the book at number one,GeorgeOrwells 1984.I think it’s absolutely outstanding.

Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to impress someone they were speaking to.This could be difficult if the conversation became more indepth!

The World Book Day survey also has some other interesting information in it.It shows that many people lie about having read classical works by Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters,Charles Dickens and so on.But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, they named J.K.Rowling,Jilly Cooper, and Stephen King (ah,the big sellers,in other words).Fortyone percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story.

So which books have you lied about reading—if any—and which is your favourite?

1.The main reason why people lie about reading is to________.

A.make fun of the listener

B.impress the listener

C.please the listener

D.interest the listener

2. The underlined word“proceeded” in the passage probably means “________”.

A.wanted                               B.happened

C.continued                             D.stopped

3.What does the World Book Day survey show?

A.Nearly half of the people surveyed didn’t read through a whole classical book.

B.People don’t like DreamsfromMyFather and GeorgeOrwells 1984.

C.Few people lie about having read classical works by Jane Austen.

D.People usually enjoy reading books by Charles Dickens.

4. What is the best title for the passage?

A.Are You a Book Liar?                     B.Readers Are All Liars

C.World Book Day                        D.Dreams from My Father

下面為五封《Crazy English》雜志的讀者來信片段。請(qǐng)從以下選項(xiàng)(A、B、C、D、E和F)中,為每封來信選取最佳的回信。選項(xiàng)有一項(xiàng)是多余項(xiàng)。

1.I am a reader of CR. Recently I found students translate some articles of CR. I appreciate your offering an opportunity to us beginners to practise using English. So I want to ask how they can obtain these articles and translate them for you, and what qualities you require. Thank you.

2.I love your Crazy English Reader magazine! It provides valuable data for work in our English teaching. My wife and I are teaching Conversational English so I’ve been giving you a bit of a plug at our middle school. I told the students to “get a copy”. It’s good stuff! Fantastic!

3.I’m one of Yao’s fans from Guangzhou. I have read some articles about Yao Ming in No. 7 Crazy English Reader. I want to know his correspondence address and the official website. Could you please tell me? Thank you very much indeed.

4.First of all, I must say thank you very much to all the CR Reader editors who gave us a really good English magazine. Secondly, I want to give you a piece of advice. In each passage, you gave us some new words with their Chinese translation. However, as far as my knowledge, I think you should give us not only the Chinese meaning but also the English meaning so as to know the words more accurately.

5.I’m an editor of the English Monthly of our school. I have a question, that is, how to say the position of the paper e.g. , 編輯; 責(zé)任編輯and so on. I hope you can help me to tell me the word in English. The more the better. Thank you so much! I love the book very much. Now I do this work. I need to study more information about this work. If you have time, please email me. Thank you.

A.  Thank you for your suggestion. We may try that in some future issues of CR. I think the best way to improve your reading vocabulary is to be able to guess the meaning of the word from the other words around it. Also, if you have an English dictionary, it is good to look up the words and them mark them down in a notebook and review them later on. Then if you really want to learn how to use the words, try using them in conversation or in writing. Hope this helps.

B.  The best way for you to learn the different positions in a newspaper or magazine is to get a copy of an all English magazine or newspaper and then copy down the different positions. There are also titles such as Managing Editor, reporter, Copy Editor, Photo Editor and Layout Editor. I hope this helps. If you have some more specific questions, you can send them to me and I’ll try to answer.

C.  The best way to reach Yao directly is through his home team, the Shanghai Sharks. You can write to him at 2570 Xietu Road, Shanghai. For more information on Yao, you can look at the sports section in sina. Com. I hope this helps. Another idea is that you can try to write to Yao while he is living and playing in Houston. You can try to reach Yao in the US at: Yao Ming Compaq Center 10 Houston, TX 77046.

D.  Thank you for being such a cheerful reader of CR. Yes, you’re right we made a mistake in the writing of that Chinese word. Each issue we try to read very carefully each article and its translation to make sure there are no mistakes, but unfortunately a few mistakes always get by. But you encourage us to keep improving, so thank you.

E.  Yes, we do have several students who help us translate some of the articles in our magazine. We contact these translators directly after interviewing their translation work. Afterwards we assign the articles to them for translation. If you are interested in being one of our translators you can send us some information about yourself and a sample of your translation work.

F.Thank you for helping us to promote CR. We’re glad it’s helpful to your students. We always try to include articles that reflect real life. It’s our hope that CR will not only improve students’ English but also open up a different worldview.
