Writing out all the invitations by hand was more time-consuming than we______.

A. will expect B. are expecting C. expect D. had expected

D

Nicolai Calabria has already become one of the best 106-pound wrestlers. He has successfully climbed to the top of the highest mountain in Africa, and most importantly, he’s changed the attitude of any normal person who watches him compete.

The 17-year-old teenager has one leg. He was born that way, but his goal is to show it’s not the one thing that defines him. He would also be the first one to tell you that he just wants to prove to others and himself that he’s just like other normal ones.

When Calabria was young, his parents tried different prostheses(假肢)to find out which was most comfortable for their son as he tried to keep up with the family, who has a preference for sports.

At first, the Calabrias had their middle child in a prosthesis that looked and functioned like a real leg, but soon they decided to choose a different path when they found it wasn’t beneficial to his movement. Then the family moved him to arm crutches(手杖)and from there a new burst of energy was found.

Getting others to believe that he could take off on the soccer field took a little bit longer. When the Calabrias moved to Concord, they had a hard time persuading the town soccer team to allow a child like him to compete with able-bodied kids. After months and months of debates and meetings, the family received the answer they were looking for. Since then, witnessing a young man on crutches who competes against those with two legs has become a fixed event in the Concord community.

“At that time I had nothing but discouragement working with the soccer community; however, now I have nothing but admiration for the fact that he’s been allowed to play, and people see that he adds value to game,” his father said. “I just think it’s a great result.”

1.This passage shows us a boy with one leg __________.

A. can do what a normal teenager can

B. is realizing as many dreams as he can

C. can make a sport event more valuable

D. can add value to society

2.We can learn from Paragraph 5 that __________.

A. Calabria proved to be the most excellent player of the team

B. it was not easy for Calabria to be accepted to the town soccer team

C. Calabria’s parents didn’t allow him to play soccer at first

D. there are some other disabled children in the soccer team

3.In Paragraph 5, the underlined part probably means __________.

A. a must-see B. a planned programme

C. an extra game D. a special occasion

4.It is implied in the last paragraph that Nicolai’s father __________.

A. has been discouraged since Nicolai played soccer

B. thinks that Nicolai is playing a key role in the team

C. is very delighted that Nicolai can play soccer in the team

D. hasn’t expected that Nicolai can be allowed to play soccer

It is well known to us that friendship is very important to people and many teenagers also think that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members don’t know them as well as their friends do. In large families, it is quite often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for some ideas.

We all know that it is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or a group of friends. Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking on the phones. This communication is very important in children’s growing up, because friends can discuss something including their secrets. Generally speaking, these things are difficult to say to their family members.

However, some parents often try to choose friends for their children. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends or making friends. I think such parents are not right. I think parents shouldn’t prevent teenagers from making friends.

Have you ever thought of the following questions?

Do you have a few good friends or many good friends?

Do you choose your friends or your friends choose you?

Have you got a good friend your parents don’t like?

Do your parents often stop you from meeting your friends?

What do you do when your parents don’t let you make friends with others?

Your answers are welcome.

3.Which of the following is the writer’s opinion?

As we all know, the Dragon Boat Festival is our country’s traditional festival, but do you know there is also a Dragon Boat Festival in South Korea, which also falls on May 5 of the lunar calendar(陰歷)? It has been reported that South Korea will apply to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO 聯(lián)合國教科文組織) to make the celebration of the Dragon Boat Festival its own intangible cultural heritage (非物質(zhì)的文化遺產(chǎn)). If successful, people from other countries may see the Dragon Festival as a Korean creation.

As the birthplace of the yearly event more than 2,000 years ago, China is not happy with the situation. "It would be a shame if another country successfully made a traditional Chinese festival part of its own cultural heritage ahead of China," said Zhou Heping, deputy(副) culture minister. The Ministry of Culture is even thinking of making its own application to UNESCO, covering all traditional Chinese festivals, including the Dragon Boat event.

It is thought that the festival is held in memory of the great poet Qu Yuan (340-278 BC), who lived in the State of Chu during the Warring States Period. Qu was known to be a patriot (愛國者) and admired by ordinary people.

He is said to have jumped into Miluo River, because he had lost hope in his country's future. When people heard about Qu's death, they sailed up and down the river searching for his body. They also beat the drums to frighten away the fish and threw Zongzi into the water to stop the fish touching Qu. Dragon boat racing is said to come from this search for the poet's body.

Over the years, the Dragon Boat Festival has spread throughout the world. In Japan and Viet Nam, as well as South Korea, the festival has mixed with and become part of the local culture.

1.The Dragon Boat Festival _______.

A. is also kept by South Korea

B. comes from South Korea

C. was created by South Korea

D. is South Korea’s cultural heritage

2.What is the reaction of the Ministry of Culture to South Korea’s intending to make the Dragon Boat Festival its own cultural heritage ?

A. Fighting against South Korea

B. Telling South Korea it’s not right to do so

C. Considering to do the similar thing

D. Asking South Korea not to do so.

3.What is the purpose of the Dragon Boat Festival’s being held?

A. In memory of Qu Yuan

B. In memory of all the patriots of China

C. To frighten away the fish

D. In honor of QuYuan’s birthday

4. After Qu Yuan’s death, Zongzi was thrown into the water to _______.

A. feed him.

B. protect his body from going bad.

C. prevent the fish biting his body

D. attract his soul

5.Now, the Dragon Boat Festival has become ______ activity.

A. a nationwide B. a worldwide
