During the past few years, scientists the world over have suddenly found themselves productively
engaged in the task they once spent their lives avoiding-writing,any kind of writing, and particularly letter
writing.Encouraged by electronic mail's surprisingly high speed, convenience and economy, people who
never before touched the stuff are regularly, skillfully, even cheerfully tapping out a great deal of
correspondence.
Electronic networks, woven into the fabric of scientific communication these days are the route to
colleagues in distant countries to share data, bulletin boards and electronic journals.Anyone with personal
computer,a modem and the software to link computers over telephone lines can sign on.An estimated five million scientists have done so with more joining every day, most of them communicating through bundle of
interconnected domestic and foreign routes known collectively as the Internet,or net.
     E-mail is starting to edge out the fax,the telephone,over-night mail,and of course,land mail.It shrinks
time and distance between scientific collaborators,in part because it is conveniently asynchronous (writers
can type while their colleagues across time zones sleep;their message will be waiting). If it is not yet
speeding discoveries,it is certainly accelerating communication.

Jeremy Bernstei, the physicist and science writer, once called E-mail the physicist's umbilical cord (生命線).Lately other people, too, have been discovering its connective virtues.Physicists are using it;college
students are using it;everybody is using it,and as a sign that it has come of age,the New Yorker has
celebrated its liberating presence with a cartoon-an appreciative dog seated at a keyboard, saying
happily,"On the Internet nobody knows you're a dog."

1.The reasons given below about the popularity of E-mail can be found in the passage except         .
A.direct and convenient
B.time-saving in delivery
C.money-saving
D.available around the clock
2.How is the Internet or net explained in the passage?
A.Electronic routes used to fax or correspond overnight.
B.Electronic routes used to read home and international journals.
C.Electronic routes waiting for correspondence while one is sleeping.
D.Electronic routes connected among millions of users home and abroad.
3.Which statement is the closest in meaning to the underlined sentence in the third paragraph?
A.It shrinks time for communication and accelerates discoveries.
B.Although it does not speed up correspondence,it helps make discoveries.
C.It quickens communication even if it does not accelerate discoveries.
D.The quick speed of correspondence may have ill effects on discoveries.
4.The writer mainly tells that         in the last paragraph.
A. E-mail is nowadays becoming a trend
B. E-mail can sometimes be unreliable
C. the presence of E-mail deserves a discussion
D. E-mail users often ignore its disadvantages

The Chongyang Festival falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, so it is also known as the Double Ninth Festival.

The festival is held in the golden season of autumn, at harvest-time.The bright clear weather and the joy of bringing in the harvest make for a festival happy atmosphere. The Chongyang Festival is usually perfect for outdoor activities.Climbing a mountain, carrying a spray of dogwood(茱萸)and drinking chrysanthemum(菊花)wine have become the traditional activities of the festival.

The dogwood is a plant with a strong fragrance(香氣),and is often used as a Chinese herbal medicine.People in ancient times believed it could drive away evil spirits and prevent one from getting a chill(寒意)in late autumn. So its history as a medicine goes back many centuries. But the custom of carrying a spray of dogwood during the Double Ninth Festival is slowly dying out and many people in the cities, do not even know what a dogwood spray looks like.

Early in Han Dynasty, about 2000 years ago, people used to climb a high platform outside the capital city of Chang’an on the occasion of the Chongyang Festival. For many, it was the last outing of the year before the onset of winter. The custom evolved(發(fā)展成)into present form, when people go climbing to get some exercises as well as enjoy the autumn scenery.

But what about those people who live in plains far from any mountain? The problem is solved by going for a picnic and eating cakes. The Chinese word for“cake”is“Gao”, a homony of the Chinese word for“high”.Mountains are high, so eating cakes can, by a stretch of the imagination, take the place of going for a climb.

John H. Johnson was born in a black family in Arkansas City in 1918. His father died in an accident
when John was six. He was reaching high school age, but his hometown offered no high school for blacks.
Fortunately (幸運(yùn)地) he had a strong-willed, caring mother. John remembers that his mother told him
many times, "Son, you can be anything you really want to be if you just believe." She told him not to be
dependent on others, including his mother. "You have to earn success," said she. "All the people who work
hard don't succeed, but the only people who do succeed are those who work hard."
These words came from a woman with less than a third-grade education. She worked hard as a cook for
two years to save enough money to take her son-then 15-to Chicago.
Chicago in 1933 was not the promised land (樂(lè)土) that black southerners were looking for. John's
mother and stepfather could not find work. But here John could go to school, and here he learned the power
of words-as an editor (編輯) of the newspaper at Du Sable High School. His wish was to publish a magazine
    for the blacks.
While others discouraged him, John's mother offered him more words to live by: "Nothing beats a failure
    but a try
." She also let him pawn (典當(dāng)) her furniture to get the $500 he needed to start the Negro magazine.
It is natural the difficulties and failures followed John closely until he became very successful. He always
keeps his mother's words in mind: "Son, failure is not in your vocabulary." Now John H. Johnson is one of
the 400 richest people in America.
    1. Why did John's mother decide to move to Chicago? Because _____.
    A. life in Chicago would be better for the blacks than for the whites
    B. John's father died in his hometown when John was very young
    C. there were no high schools for the blacks in their hometown
    D. John needed education and he could go to school there

    A. if you try, you will surely succeed
    B. a try is always followed by a failure
    C. only by trying can you get out of failure
    D. a failure is difficult to beat, even if you try
    3. We can learn from this passage that John's mother _____.
    A. didn't depend on others or give up easily
    B. thought success only came from working hard
    C. thought one could be whatever one wanted to be
    D. believed one would succeed without working hard
    4. What can be inferred from this passage?
    A. If someone wants to be successful,he should always stand firm.
    B. Chicago was the promised land for the whites in 1933.
    C. John's father died in an accident during the war.
    D. John's mother was caring for him.

More and more Chinese mainland buyers have in the past few weeks been queuing to cross the border into Hong Kong to lessen growing financial pressure led by rising food prices at home. Their shopping
baskets are full of sugar, salt and even tissue paper.
While prices are rising so fast, many people are worrying out ways to cut down their expenses. Du Z
henqi, an 80-year-old Beijinger, grows different vegetables in the community yard. But this year, before they turned ripe, they were all picked by his neighbors. “The prices of vegetables have gone up dramatically,” said Du. “So I understand those people and it pleased me to offer them my help.” Du expressed his

planting vegetables on the balcony. Some consider buying in large quantity to stay within a tight budget.

amounts of vegetables for her family and neighbors. “Instead of buying small amounts, I buy large amounts of vegetables at the market and get a 50-percent discount.”
With these tips, many people have become experts in cutting household expenses. However, financial
pressure caused by the current round of price rising still troubles many Chinese people.
