11.In America,parents tend to encourage their children to develop their potential to the fullest extent.Fathers and mothers frequently teach their children both ambition and the confidence necessary to work toward their goals.American parents are always active in concentrating on what their kids can do,not what they can't.As a result,millions of American boys and girls grow up hoping to become actors and athletes,diplomats and doctors.Many of them even want to become president.
American parents often encourage their children to become involved in extra activities of all types at school,such as student government,sports and music.They believe that only through taking part in these activities can their children become mature young adults.
As we all know,schoolwork is important.But parents should realize that the social skills their children learn from natural conversations with each other are as important as schoolwork and the skills they will need in the future work.What's more important in their work is that their children should have a sound knowledge of physics or the ability to communicate effectively.
As a rule,Chinese parents don't educate their children about the same kind of ambition and confidence as Americans do,nor do they encourage the same level of participation in extra activities.Children are typically advised to study hard and pass exams.They have to spend a lot of time in doing much schoolwork every day.It is a great waste of time to do so.
Now more and more Chinese parents have recognized that they should pay attention to developing the potential of their children.I hope that leaders in Chinese educational circles should take some measures to develop the potential of their children.I am very confident about it.
32.From the passage,we know the American parents pay much more attention to

A.their children's studying hard and well

D.know more than American parents to educate their children

A.American children are brave and adventurous
B.American children are more active in their studies

12.As we grow old,we realize that we have so little time to read and there are so many great books that we've yet to get around to.Yet re-readers are everywhere around us.For certain fans,re-reading The Lord of the Rings is a conventional practice annually.One friend told me that Jane Austen's Emma can still surprise him,despite his having read it over 50times.
New sudden clear understandings can be gained from the process of re-reading.Journalist Rebacca Mead,a long-time Englishwoman in New York,first came across George Eliot's Middlemarch at 17.Since then,she has read it again every five years.With each re-reading,it has opened up further; in each chapter of her life,it has resonated (引起共鳴) differently.Mead evidenced the large number of ways in which really good books not only stand the test of repeat reads,but also offer fresh gifts each time we crack their spines.These kinds of books grow with us.
Scientists have also recognized the mental health benefits of re-reading.Research conducted with readers in the US found that on our first reading,we are concerned with the"what"and the"why".Second time round,we're able to better appreciate the emotions that the plot continues to express.As researcher Cristel Russell of the American University explained,returning to a book"brings new or renewed appreciation of both the great book and its readers."
It's true that we often find former selves on the pages of old books (if we're fond of making notes on the pages).These texts can carry us back to a time and place,and remind us of the kind of person that we were then.We're changed not only by living experience but also by read experience-by the books that we've discovered since last reading the one in our hand.
More so than the movie director or the musician,the writer calls upon our imaginations,using words to lead us to picture this declaration of love or that unfaithfulness in life.A book is a joint project between writers and readers,and we must pour so much of ourselves into reading that our own life story can become connected with the story in the book.
Perhaps what's really strange is that we don't re-read more often.After all,we watch our favourite films again and we wouldn't think of listening to an album only once.We treasure messy old paintings as objects,yet of all art forms,literature alone is a largely one-time delight.A book,of course,takes up more time,but as Mead confirms,the rewards make it adequately worthwhile.
32.The two books are mentioned in Paragraph 1mainly toB.
A.a(chǎn)ttract the attention of readers
B.introduce the topic of the passage
C.provide some background information
D.show the similarity between re-readers
33.The underlined expression"crack their spines"in Paragraph 2refers toB.
A.recite them
B.re-read them
C.recall them
D.retell them
34.It can be learned from the passage thatC.
A.reading benefits people both mentally and physically
B.readers mainly focus on feelings on their first reading
C.we know ourselves better through re-reading experience
D.writers inspire the same imaginations as film directors do
35.The purpose of the passage is toC.
A.call on different understandings of old books
B.focus on the mental health benefits of reading
C.bring awareness to the significance of re-reading
D.introduce the effective ways of re-reading old books.

10.The recent  crash landing (強(qiáng)行著陸)of Russian spacecraft Phobos-Grunt has focused attention on the increasing amount of space junk orbiting the planet.So does this mean the Earth has been getting lighter?The BBC's Radio 4programme More or Less turned to a group of Cambridge University academics for the answer.
There are factors that are causing Earth to both gain and lose mass(物體的質(zhì)量) over time, according to Dr Chris Smith,a medical microbiologist and broadcaster who tries to improve the public understanding of science.
By far the biggest contributor to the world's mass is the 40,000tonnes(公噸) of dust that is falling from space to Earth a year,says Dr Smith."The Earth is acting like a giant  vacuum cleaner(真空吸塵器)powered by gravity in space, pulling in particles of dust,"
Another much less significant reason the planet is gaining mass is because of global warming.
"NASA has calculated that the Earth is gaining about 160tonnes a year because the temperature of the Earth is going up.If we are adding energy to the system,the mass must go up,"says Dr Smith.
This means that in total between 40,000and 41,000tonnes is being added to the mass of the planet each year.
Population growth and new buildings are not a factor,he says, because both of these are actually made up of existing matter on the planet.
But overall,Dr Smith has calculated that the Earth-including the sea and the atmosphere-is losing mass.He points to a handful of reasons.
For instance,the Earth's core (核心)is like a giant nuclear reactor (反應(yīng)堆)that is gradually losing energy over time,and that loss in energy translates into a loss of mass.But this is a tiny amount-he estimates no more than 16tonnes a year.
But there are some gases such as hydrogen escaping from the atmosphere.Dr Smith says,"The Earth is losing about three kilograms of hydrogen gas every second.It's about 95,000tonnes every year."
"The other very light gas   this is happening to is helium(氦)and there is much less of that,so it's about 1,600tonnes a year of helium that we lose."

72.We can learn from the text that Phobos-Grunt most probablyA.
A.faced dangers when travelling in space           B.was forced to land by a terrorist
C.bumped into a satellite                          D.exploded while taking off
73.What can we know about Dr Chris Smith?D
A.He is more interested in broadcasting than science.
B.He is one of the broadcasters of BBC's Radio 4.
C.He never thought the earth would become light.
D.He hopes more people can understand science
74.The underlined word"this"in the last paragraph refers to the fact thatB.
A.the weight of the Earth is changing
B.gases escape from the atmosphere
C.dust is falling from space to the Earth
D.the Earth is getting even warmer
75.We can learn from the textD.
A.the Earth lost much less energy in the past
B.humans can sense the weight loss of the Earth
C.the Earth will become heavier in the near future
D.the Earth can suck up the particles of dust in space.
