Look out for the “Made in the USA” label (標(biāo)簽) on some best-selling music from Japan’s top pop artists. Japan’s chart-topping (流行榜) musicians, looking to make music with some of the top talent in the United State, or just looking for a bit of anonymity (匿名) overseas away from the press pack at home, are heading to studios in places like New York and Los Angeles to record music.

Among the top 20 album (一套唱片) in Japan in May, 14 were made by Japanese artists and six of those were partially or completely recorded in the United States. The other six slots (位置) in the top 20 chart were filled by overseas artists. Japanese artists started coming in force to the United States to make music during the heady (輕率的) days of the late 1980s when the yen (日元) was strong and the novelty (新穎) factor was high. Yet despite the fact that the novelty factor has worn off and the economy has taken a nosedive, top artists are still heading stateside[在(向、來自)美國本土].

Japan is the world’s second-biggest music market after the United States with yearly sales of around US $ 5 billion. Top Japanese artists have earning power near that of their counter parts in the United States and Europe. “What brings Japanese artists to New York a lot of times is the cachet (威望) of recording in America, and the energy you get when you come to New York to record,” said Steve Rosenthal, the owner of the Magic Shop recording studio. “The city where you make a record has a lot to do with what the record eventually sounds like and feels like, and there is a certain energy you get when you make a record in New York.” The first Japanese artists started coming around 10 years ago and now make up about 15 percent of the studio’s clientele (客戶). Japanese artist Bonnie Pink recently cut an album at the studio and rockers (搖滾歌手), Super Car also paid a visit hoping to catch the vibe (氛圍) that helped propel (推進(jìn)) the Ramones to stardom (明星身份,明星界).

One day Burton took his children to the zoo. He told them to be ready at two o'clock, but they weren't all ready then: little Tommy couldn't find his shoes. He could find his brown shoes, but he couldn't find his black shoes, and wanted to wear his black shoes to the zoo. At a quarter past two his brothers and sisters told him to wear his brown shoes. Their mother waved goodbye and told them to enjoy their trip to the zoo. Then she sat down to read a book in the empty, quiet house.

When they got to the zoo, Burton told the children to stay with; he didn't want them to get lost in the zoo. Little Tommy asked his father to buy some food for the bears; but his father answered:“Look at that notice, Tommy. It tells us not to feed the animals.”

“Why does it tell us not to feed the animals?”asked Tommy.

“Because they get a lot of food already.”said Burton.“And people often try to give them the wrong food; that's bad for the animals.”

At three o'clock the dolphin (海豚) show began. All the Burtons wanted to see it, so Mr. Burton bought seven tickets and took the children down to the dolphinarium(海豚館). The dolphins did a lot of tricks: they jumped up into the air and flew through hoops (大鐵圈) over the water; they caught rubber rings with their noses; and they played‘basketball’with red and yellow balls. The trainer blew his whistle when he wanted the dolphins to do something, and when they did it he gave them some fish.

“How can the dolphins do all those tricks?”asked the little Tommy.

“Because they are very intelligent (聰明的),”said his big brother.“They can understand when their trainer tells them to do something; and they like to do tricks (耍把戲). because he always gives them some fish when they do them.”

“That's good,”said Tommy.“I like to do tricks too; why doesn't Father give me some candies (糖果) when I do them?”

What comes into your mind when you think about robots? Do you imagine armies of evil metal monsters planning to take over the world? Or, perhaps of mechanical men who have been created as guards or soldiers by a mad genius? Or maybe you think of man-like robots who act, think, and look like human beings. In fact robots like these have more to do with science fiction films than with real life. In the real world robots are machines that do jobs which otherwise have to be done by people. Robots either operate by themselves or under the control of a person.

In a car factory, for example, robot machinery can put together and paint car bodies. On the sea bed remote-controlled under water machines with mechanical arms can perform tasks too difficult for divers. Robot spacecraft can explore the solar system and send back information about planets and stars.

Many robots have computer brains. Some robots are fitted with cameras, sensors, and microphones which enable them to see, to feel, and to hear. And some robots can even produce electronic speech.

All this does not mean that a robot can think and behave like a human being. Present day robots have to be programmed with a great deal of information before they can carry out even simple tasks.

1.Robots in real life ________.

[ ]

A.can behave like human beings

B.have the ability to control the world

C.can act as the evil guards of a tyrant

D.can help us with a lot of work

2.According to this article, which of the following is NOT TRUE about robots in the real world?

[ ]

A.Some robots are as creative as artists

B.Some robots can help manufacture cars

C.Some robots can see and hear

D.Some robots can explore outer space

3.Robots can perform many tasks for man because ________.

[ ]

A.they have intelligence

B.they are supplied with computer programs

C.they can imitate human beings

D.they have the ability to learn new things

4.The robots in science fiction films and those in real life differ mainly in ________.

[ ]

A.mentality
B.a(chǎn)ppearance
C.material
D.size

“It hurts me more than you”, and “This is for your own good”-these are the statements my mother used to make to raise my sense of discipline(紀(jì)律)when I had to learn Latin, clean my room, stay home and do homework.

That was before we entered the permissive period in education in which we decided it was all right not to push our children to achieve their best in school. The schools and the educators made it easy for us.They taught that it was all right to be parents who take a let-alone policy. We stopped making our children do homework. We gave them calculators, turned on the television, left the teaching to the teachers and went on vacation.

Now teachers, faced with children who have been developing at their own pace for the past 15 years, are realizing we’ve made a terrible mistake. One such teacher is Sharon Clomps who says of her students-“so passive”-and wonders what has happened.Nothing is demanded of them, she believes.Television, says Clomps, contributes to children’s passivity(被動(dòng)).“We’re talking about a generation of kids who’ ve never been hurt or hungry. They have learned somebody will always do it for them, instead of saying ‘go and look it up’, you tell them the answer. It takes greater energy to say no to a kid.”

Yes, it does.It takes energy and it takes work. It’s time for parents to end their vacation and come back to work. It’ s time to turn the TV off, to tell them it hurts you more than them but it’ s for their own good. It’s s time to start telling them no again.
