16.Weaving hammocks(吊床) is an art that takes a sharp eye,a skilled hand and lots of patience.But in Lenwood Haddock's case,being blind works to his advantage.His trained,sensitive hands can perfectly handle every step of the complicated process.Since beginning his craft in 1986,Lenwood has woven about 145,000 perfect hammocks.
Now 61,Lenwood lost his sight in 1973,at age 18,during a hunting accident."My whole working career has been blind,"he says.He first found a job as a woodworker,but when that organization closed,the North Carolina Division of Services for the Blind connected him with Hatteras Hammocks.
On his first day of work,"I did a total of one hammock,"Lenwood recalls,laughing."And then I came home and laid on the sofa and went to sleep.I lift weights,but I wasn't as tough as I thought until I started weaving.It takes a lot of energy,and you're standing up all day."
In time,however,Lenwood got into a good working rhythm and found he had a gift for the job.At first he worked on-site at the company,but after a year Lenwood moved his operation to the home workshop where he'd worked for 10 years during his woodworking days.
Since Lenwood began with Hatteras Hammocks 30 years ago,the company has acquired other brands and changed its name to The Hammock Source.Today,it is the world's largest maker and seller of hammocks,all built by hand.

4.Learning a foreign language changes the way we see the world,according to new research.
Panos Athanasopoulos,of Newcastle University, has found that bilingual speakers think differently to those who only use one language.
Working with both Japanese and English speakers,he looked at their language use, along with the length of time they had been in the country, and matched this against how they perceived(感知) the colour blue.
Previous research has shown that colour perception is an ideal way of testing bilingual concepts because there is a huge variation between where different languages place boundaries on the colour spectrum(色譜).
In Japanese, for example, there are additional basic terms for light blue(mizuiro) and blue(ao),which are not found in English.
"We found that people who only speak Japanese distinguished more between light and dark blue than English speakers,"said Dr Athanasopoulos."The degree to which Japanese-English bilinguals resembled either type depended on which of their two languages they used more frequently."
Most people tend to focus on how to do things such as ordering food or using public transport when they learn another language to help them get by,but this research has shown that there is a much deeper connection going on.
"As well as learning vocabulary and grammar you're also unconsciously learning a new way of seeing the world,"said Dr Athanasopoulos."There's a close link between language and culture.If you're learning language in a classroom you are trying to achieve something specific, but when you're immersed(沉浸)in the culture and speaking it,you're thinking in a completely different way."

32.What can we learn about bilingual speakers?D

8.A popular saying goes,"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."However, that's not really true.Words have the power to build us up or tear us down.It doesn't matter if the words come from someone's else or ourselves---the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We're usually too embarrassed to admit it,though. In fact,we really shouldn't be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This"self-talk"helps us motivate ourselves,remember things,solve problems,and calm Our-
selves down.Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive,we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project,do well in a test,or finally clean your room, join me in saying"Good job!"
Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store,we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner.Or harsh(刻薄的)and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.
Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us!Before speaking,we should always ask ourselves:Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn't pass this test, then it's better left unsaid.
Words possess power both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem and motivate others to do their best.Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.

28.The main idea of the first paragraph is thatD.
A.not sticks and stones but words will hurt us.
B.inspiring words give us confidence
C.negative words may let us down
D.words have a lasting effect on us
29.There is no sense for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves becauseB
A.a(chǎn)lmost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves
B.we can benefit from talking to ourselves
C.talking to ourselves always gives us courage
D.it does no harm to have"self-talk"when we are alone
30.The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timelyA
A.praise ourselves
B.remind ourselves
C.make ourselves relaxed
D.give ourselves amusement
31.The author would probably hold the view thatD
A.encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers
B.negative words may stimulate us to make more progress

D.it is better to think twice before talking to others.

The two-mile pipe connects the De Halve Maan brewery (啤酒廠)in the city's historic center with a bottling plant in the suburbs.
It's a practical solution to the logistical nightmare of having trucks thundering daily through the narrow cobbled (鋪有鵝卵石的)streets of a medieval town,the brewery said.The old town of Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.De Halve Maan is one of the fastest growing breweries in Belgium,and the traffic it was generating was becoming unsustainable.

It is equipped with the latest technology to ensure the quality of the beer is maintained throughout its journey.It also has a cleaning and flushing system to keep the pipe clean.
