The University of Cambridge confirmed on Monday that it had been using scores from China's national college entrance examination, or gaokao, as part of its admission criteria for Chinese students for several years.

It says in Weibo post, however, that it does not admit students only based on their test scores.

The University statement came after some Chinese media reported over the weekend that the university would start to admit Chinese students that ranked in the top 0.1 percent in the gaokao in their province, indicating that it would try to compete for talent with top universities in China.

The news immediately became one of the most viewed topics on social media, being read by 280 million users on Sina Weibo.

The gaokao is increasingly accepted by universities in Australia, the United States, Canada and Europe. The University of New Hampshire became the first US state university to accept the gaokao in its entrance criteria last year. The test is also recognized by 30 universities in Australia and 30 in Canada, as well as colleges in Italy, France and Spain.

【答案】The University of Cambridge announced that it had been accepting China's gaokao scores when admitting students for several years. Actually, more and more universities in Western countries have begun to accept the gaokao.

From where I stand, the gaokao's gaining more international acceptance conveys the messages that China is becoming much stronger and more influential on the world stage. First of all, China has created numerous economic miracles since its reform and opening up. It's known to all that China is the world's second largest economy and its GDP has been increasing rapidly in the past 40 years. Secondly, China has made great achievements in science and technology. Let's take " four new great inventions " for example. High-speed railways, electronic payments, shared bicycles and online shopping have completely changed the world. Last but not the least, China's soft power has been improved. As a country with a history of 5000 years, China has been spreading its culture throughout the world. More and more foreign countries begin to show interest in, and respect for China.

【題目】請認真閱讀下面短文,并根據(jù)所讀內容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一個最恰當?shù)膯卧~。注意:每個空格只填1個單詞。

Make the most of networking opportunities

Get to those networking events and talk, talk, talk. “There is value in every conversation you have, you never know where your next piece of work may come from. Changing the mindset to professionalism and saying, ‘I am a graphic designer’ rather than ‘I am a graduate’ is very important, ” says Lydia Wakefield, education and training manager at the Association of Independent Professionals and the SelfEmployed.

Know your worth

It's hard to persuade people to pay for your work if you're willing to give it away. “Value your worth from the beginning. A lot of people feel the pressure to work nothing or charge a really low rate if they've been studying. Clients are willing to pay for the quality of the work that you do, ” says Wakefield.

Set up with the tools to get paid

Register for selfassessment and file those tax returns. “Make sure you have contracts and invoice templates(發(fā)票模板) in place, ” says Wakefield. It doesn't hurt to get some advice from a professional, says Jeff Skinner, of the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the London Business School. “Find an accountant or someone doing something similar and ask them for commercial advice, ” he says.

Manage expectations

Know the limits to your capabilities. “You can feel the need to say yes to every project. Have a selfawareness of how much work you can take on at any time and manage expectations, ” says Wakefield.

Build resilience (韌性)

Wakefield highlights the importance of having a thick skin. “If you get a no, don't take it to heart. Keep going, you will find your next client, ” she says, “ask for feedback, you can always use it for testimonial.” And, remember that you're not alone. “It really is emotional highs and lows for any entrepreneur in early stages. But you're in a network with other people on the same journey as you, ” says Skinner.
