“I will never marry,” the future Elizabeth I declared at the age of eight, and, to the terror of her people, the Great Queen kept her word.
For four centuries, historians have guessed why Elizabeth never married. In her own day, her decision to remain single was considered absurd and dangerous.A queen needed a husband to make political decisions for her and to organise and lead her military campaigns.More important, she needed male heirs to avoid a civil war after her death.
There was no shortage of suitors for the Queen, both English courtiers (朝臣) and foreign princes, and it was confidently expected for the best part of 30 years that Elizabeth would eventually marry one of them.Indeed, although she insisted that she preferred the single state, she kept these suitors in a state of permanent expectation. This was a deliberate policy on the Queen's part, since by keeping foreign princes in hope, sometimes for a decade, she kept them friendly when they might otherwise have made war on her kingdom.
There were, indeed, good political reasons for her avoiding marriage. The disastrous union of her sister Mary I to Philip II of Spain had had an unwelcome foreign influence upon English politics. The English were generally prejudiced against the Queen taking a foreign husband, particularly a Catholic one.Yet if she married an English, jealousy might lead to the separation of the court.
There were other, deeper reasons for Elizabeth's unwillingness to marry, chief of which, I believe, was her fear of losing her autonomy as Queen. In the 16th century, a queen was regarded as holding supreme dominion(統(tǒng)治權)over the state, while a husband was thought to hold supreme dominion over his wife.Elizabeth knew that marriage and motherhood would bring some harm to her power.
She once pointed out that marriage seemed too uncertain a state for her. She had seen several unions in her immediate family break down, including that of her own parents.
Some writers, based on very fragile evidence, have argued that Elizabeth was frightened or incapable of the sex act, but it is more likely that she feared childbirth. Two of her stepmothers, her grandmother and several acquaintances had died in childbed.
Elizabeth's father, Henry VIII, had had her mother, Anne Boleyn, killed; her stepmother Catherine Howard later suffered the same fate. When Elizabeth was 14 she was all but attracted by Admiral Thomas Seymour, who also went to the prison within a year. Witnessing these terrible events at an early age, it has been argued, may have put Elizabeth off marriage.
Elizabeth had to decide her priorities. Marriage or being single? Elizabeth was far too intelligent. The choice she made was courageous and revolutionary, and, in the long run, the right one for England.

Yesterday, I met a delightful woman at a work event. As we talked, she told me about her       in Manila, Philippines. She spoke about the     her culture values their elders, and she explained that children are         from the time of birth to respect and          people older than themselves.
It was       to hear that,so I enjoyed listening and learning. Here is her memory       I found so beautiful:
When she was growing up, her father had three jobs to       his family. She said her dad never      , and though he worked very hard, he always had       for them. One day, her father was        at his full-time job. For several months, he was mailed temporary disability checks       he was recovering.
When her father was able to return to his full-time job, he took all those disability        that were sent to him while he was recovering and handed them back to the        . He told them that he had two good legs and arms, and did not need this money. He told them to give the money to people who could not work, to people who        needed it.
The woman telling the story was a little girl at that time. She had        her father that very day when he went back to his company        all those unopened checks. "My father is my hero," she      . Lowering her voice, she said she would never forget what he did, and what an           and influential mentor(導師) he was on how to live a life.
From my communication with her, it was          that her father's same sweet spirit had been       to this woman, and to her family. Hearing this story was so refreshing to my soul. I hope it is for you too.

People on a college campus were more likely to give money to the March of Dimes if they were asked for a donation by a disabled woman in a wheelchair than if asked by a nondisabled woman. In another        , subway riders in New York saw a man carrying a stick stumble(絆腳) and fall to the floor. Sometimes the victim had a large red birthmark on his      ; sometimes he did not. In this situation, the victim was more likely to         aid if his face was spotless than if he had an unattractive birthmark. In         these and other research findings, two themes are         : we are more willing to help people we like for some reason and people we think     assistance.
In some situations, those who are physically attractive are more likely to receive aid.       , in a field study researchers placed a completed application to graduate school in a telephone box at the airport. The application was ready to be        , but had apparently been "lost". The photo attached to the application was sometimes that of a very          person and sometimes that of a less attractive person. The measure of helping was whether the individual who found the envelope actually mailed it or not. Results showed that people were more likely to        the application if the person in the photo was physically attractive.
The degree of      between the potential helper and the person in need is also important. For example, people are more likely to help a stranger who is from the same country rather than a foreigner. In one study, shoppers on a busy street in Scotland were more likely to help a person wearing a(n)           T-shirt than a person wearing a T-shirt printed with offensive words.
Whether a person receives help depends in part on the "worth" of the case. For example, shoppers in a supermarket were more likely to give someone.        to buy milk rather than to buy cookies, probably because milk is thought more essential for        than cookies. Passengers on a New York subway were more likely to help a man who fell to the ground if he appeared to be         rather than drunk.

科目:高中英語 來源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

When I asked my daughter which item she would keep: the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend, she said "the phone". Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which makes me unusual. Because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology.
Point 1  The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 pm and then spends an hour  on the phone talking to the very people she has been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have anything to talk about?
Point 2  The mobile phone means that we are never alone. !' The mobile saved my life, "says Crystal Johnstone. She had
an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton. Trapped inside, she managed to make the call that brought the ambulance(救護車) to her rescue.
Point 3  The mobile removes our secret. It allows marketing manager of Haba Deutsch, Carl Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all round the world at any time of day to ask where they are, where they are going, and how their last meeting went.
Point 4  The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says, "We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near--but we didn't meet for the first two weeks!"
Point 5  The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several complete strangers simultaneously (同時地) on chat lines (at least my daughter does. I wouldn't know what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while they're space-walking. And, with the phone line hooked up to the computer, we can access(進入) the Internet, the biggest library on Earth.
小題1:How do you understand" Point 1—The telephone creates the need to communicate,... "?
A.People don't communicate without telephone.
B.People communicate because of the creating of the telephone.
C.People communicate more since telephone has been created.
D.People communicate more because of more traffic.
小題2:Which of the following best shows people's attitude towards mobile phones?
A.Mobile phones help people deal with the emergency.
B.Mobile phones bring convenience as well little secret to people.
C.Mobile phones are so important and should be encouraged.
D.Mobile phones are part of people's life.
小題3:Which points do you think support the idea that phones improve people's life?
a. Point 1. b. Point 2. c. Point 3. d. Point 4. e. Point 5.
A.c, dB.a, eC.a, cD.b, e
小題4:It is possible to talk to several complete strangers simultaneously through      .
A.the TV screenB.a fax machine
C.the phone line hooked up to the computerD.a microphone
小題5:The best heading for the passage is      .

Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors. I feel there are a number of reasons for this.
Some people blame(責備) the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation(一代人)) of grown-ups who don’t often cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food.
There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will probably choose sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives. There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime(消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports. The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.
小題1:According to the text, what kind of children may eat more unhealthy food?
A.Those who often take exercise.

D.Those who often walk to school.

B.Children ought to keep away from fast food shops.
C.Parents needn't cook meals for their children.

The Couch Surfing network is an online community stretching across the globe with over one and a half million members. The basic concept is to provide a platform for travelers to contact people who are willing to put them up free of charge. Travelers connect with potential hosts online and, if they like each other, exchange details to make farther arrangements.
Basil is one traveler from Switzerland who is currently couch surfing with a Chinese host in Beijing. "I thought staying in hostel is nice but you mostly meet foreigners and speak English. If you use Couch Surfing you have chance to meet people living here and really get a chance to know the life of the place you visit. " Basil was speaking during a regular meeting of Beijing network of Couch Surfing with a membership of almost 2,000.
Although some people may have concerns about meeting complete strangers and giving them full access to your house, Beijing group member Fred Sharp from California says that the Couch Surfing community is one that generally attracts trustworthy people.
"I have never had a problem with guests. I'd say that this Couch Surfing community worldwide is a fairly trustworthy community like I say, always be cautious, make sure that you read everyone's profile that you're considering hosting, and if it doesn't feel right just say' no', it's OK. "
Originally launched in the US as a non-profit organization in 2004, Couch Surfing is growing fast across the world. China is no exception with around 30,000 members and hundreds more signing up each week. One of them is Beijing resident Hai Yan who joined in November 2009. She says the first time she hosted a guest was a very positive experience. "My first guest was from Italy. He was very kind and helpful. He bought me a present from Italy, a handbag. It's a famous brand!"
As the organization grows from strength to strength, hotel owners across the world will be watching very closely and possibly thinking twice about raising their prices too high.

The slavery drama “12 Years a Slave” won the Academy Award for best picture on Sunday, making history as the first movie from a black director to win the film industry's highest honor in 86 years of the Oscars. Can anyone tell me your ideas about this movie? —— GreatMartin
“12 Years a Slave is a surprisingly underwhelming movie. It is more of a string of picture about several heartless and evil white men(and women)who are just mean without the motivation of running a plantation on their minds. There is very little character development and most of the film relies on what the audience already knows and feels about slavery.” 一一GeminiJef
‘‘Never have I been stunned into an emotional silence after watching a film in the theater.I've come out of films before thinking” My god, that was unbelievable”,like when I saw The Lord of the Rings for the first time, but this film just hits you on another level entirely. You sit there after it’s over, wondering if what you’d just experienced was real. The day after.you feel the same.”一一Pauljohnson
“This movie is just an average movie about slavery. Are you kidding me,segregation movies are a dime a dozen and this movie beat out Gravity for Golden Globes? Gravity has never been done before.12 Years a Slave I watched once and will never watch again.I watched Gravity 5 times and still love it.’’一一Dominionator
“This movie was realistic and engaging at every second.Even the dramatic pauses were worthwhile and definitely not a waste of time. The script inferred and hinted at events rather than just plain saying them, and that was genius.Outstanding photography, amazing special effects and the acting is top notch. There were a few people that walked out during some scenes. What a shame!” 一一Apols
