I used to be ashamed of my grandma. I know that's a      thing to say, but it was true until today, so I have to     it.
The     started when my friend Katy found Grandma's false teeth floating in a glass on the bathroom sink. I was so used to seeing them that I      took notice of them. But Katy shouted, laughing and      to tell everyone about it. I had to get down on my knees and      her to shut up so my grandma wouldn't     and get hurt.
After that happened, I     there were a million things about Grandma that were embarrassing.
Once she took Jill and me out to Burger King.     ordering our hamburgers well-done, she told the person behind the counter, "They'll have two Whoppers (巨無(wú)霸) well-to-do. " Jill burst out laughing, but I almost    .
After a while, I started wishing I could     Grandma in a closet. I even complained to my parents. Both my parents said I had to be careful not to make Grandma feel     in our home.
Then last Wednesday, something happened that     everything completely. My teacher told us to help find interesting old people and     them about their     for a big Oral History project. I was trying to think of someone when Angie pushed me gently.
"Volunteer your grandmother," she whispered. "She's     and rich in experience."
That was the last thing I ever thought Angie would say about my grandma.
This is how I ended up on      today interviewing my own grandmother before the whole school assembly (集合). All my friends and teachers were listening to her      she was a great heroine. I was      of my grandma and hoped she would      know that I had been ashamed of her.

Maybe you love them and want to pet every one you see.Or maybe you’re afraid of them and want to move to a dogfree neighborhood.Either way, dogs are a part of life.Millions of people have dogs as pets. You’ll see them all over town,in the city, country, and even when you’re on vacation.
Like many kinds of pets—no matter how small or cute they are—dogs need to be respected as animals that, under certain conditions, could hurt you.Nearly 5 million dog bites happen every year in the United States. No one wants a dog bite, but how do you prevent one?
One dog expert has come up with an easy way for kids to remember some tips to prevent dog bites. It spells “DOG SAFE”.
Don’t tease, please:Teasing a dog can make it angry enough to bite. For instance,if a dog has food or a toy, never try to take it away. You wouldn’t like it if someone took your snack(點(diǎn)心) while you were eating it!
Only pet with permission:Never pet a dog without asking the owner if it’s OK.Some dogs don’t like to be touched by strangers.
Give space:Little kids especially might run right up to a lovely dog and try to pet it or give it a hug.But dogs need space.Crowding a dog can frighten or anger the dog.
Slow down:Some dogs like to chase(追逐) and bite.Of course, you don’t want to be chased or bitten! The way to avoid it is to go slow around dogs.Never run toward them or away from them.If a dog you don’t know runs toward you, freeze. If you need to get away, back up slowly.
Always get help:You may want to bring home a dog that seems lost or injured. But animals who are lost or injured may be very frightened or in pain.Find a grownup instead who can decide how to care for the animal.
Fingers together:When feeding a dog a treat, put the treat in the palm of your hand and keep your fingers and thumb close together. Why?The dog is less likely to get confused about which is the treat—the doggie snack or your finger!
Even good dogs can bite:Some people are very surprised when their dog bites someone, but all dogs can bite.Avoid doing things that make dogs scared or angry, such as backing them into a corner or bothering them when they are sleeping.

It seems hard to watch someone yawn(打哈欠) and not to yawn ourselves. Even reading about yawning can make you do it. Now, a new study has found why yawning has such a powerful force.
Yawning when others yawn, the study suggests, is a sign of pity and a form of social connection. Kids don’t develop this deeply rooted behavior until around age four, the study found. Kids with autism (自閉癥) are less likely to catch yawns. In the most serious cases, they never do. Yawning might help doctors to see whether the children are developing rightly. The work could also lead to a better understanding of the ways that people communicate and connect.
"Emotional infection seems to be a born thing that connects us together," said Molly Helt, a graduate student in psychology at the University of Connecticut. "Yawning may be part of that." Inspiration for her study came when she tried to get her own autistic son to clear his ears on an airplane. She repeatedly yawned at him, hoping he would yawn back. He never did.
"The fact that autistic kids don’t do it might mean they’re really missing out on that emotional connection with people around them," she said. "The biggest thing people try to figure out after birth is how we become humans and understand that humans have minds that are different from others’," she added. "Autistic people never seem to understand that."
Like infectious (有感染力的)laughter and crying, scientists have found that yawning is a shared experience that promotes social connection. Helt said it could fight stress after a period of being nervous and spread a feeling of calm through a group.

The interview has been going on for about 20 minutes and everything seems to be going well. Then, suddenly, the interviewer asks an unexpected question, “Which is more important, law or love?”
Job applicants in the West increasingly find themselves asked strange questions like this. And the signs are that this is beginning to happen in China.
Employers want people who are skilled, enthusiastic and devoted. So these are the qualities that any reasonably intelligent job applicant will try to show no matter what his or her actual feelings are.In response, employers are increasingly using the questions which try and show the applicant’s true personality.
The question in the first paragraph comes from a test called the Kiersey Temperament Sorter. It is an attempt to discover how people solve problems, rather than what they know. This is often called aptitude (天資) test.
According to Mark Baldwin of Alliance, many job applicants in China are finding this type of questions difficult.“When a Chinese fills out an aptitude test, he or she will think there is a right answer but they may fail because they try to guess what the examiner wants to see.”
This is sometimes called the prisoner’s dilemma(窘境).Applicants are trying to act cleverly in their own interest, but they fail because they don’t understand what the interviewer is looking for.Remember that in an aptitude test, the correct answer is the honest answer.

Our teacher asks us to keep a diary in English. I enjoy doing so because I          keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways to      our English writing ability.
Compared with       forms of writing, it is shorter and       less time. It can help us to       the habit of thinking in English.         we persist in (堅(jiān)持) this practice, gradually we’ll learn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English,         can use the important phrases and sentences we’ve        in or out of English classes to describe our        , and this way we can master and use freely       we’ve learned, which will do good         us in English learning. But      we certainly run up against many difficulties. In the first place, it often happens that we have       finding proper words and phrases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there        many idiomatic(慣用的) ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is extremely hard for us to put them       English properly.
As far as I am concerned, my suggestion is that we          always have a notebook and a Chinese-English dictionary within easy reach. Whenever         beats (難倒)us, we can first put it down in our notebook and then look it up in our dictionary. We can also turn to our English teacher for          , if necessary.
In short, I believe that it is of          use to keep a diary in English for the development of our          skills.
