15."Happy New Year!"Everyone will greet each other with these words as they meet each other on New Year's Day.But it wasn't always January 1 that marked the New Year.
At least 4,000 years ago,the anci ent Egyptians and Babylonians marked the changing of the year.In Egypt, the year started when the Nile River flooded, enriching farmers'fields. This happened at the end of September.
The Babylonians held a festival in the spring,on March 23,to kick off the next farming cycle. The Babylonian celebration lasted for 11 days.
The date January 1 wa s picked by the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar as the change of the year when he established his own calendar in 46 BC.The month of January originates from the Roman god,Janus. He is pictured with two heads. One head looks forward and the other back. They represent a break between the old and new.The new calendar was in time with the sun and it has been used until the present day.
In Vietnam, the New Year holiday happens in February. They buy fresh flowers and a peach blossom to put in their house, following the Vietnamese custom.
Thailand has its specific New Year's date; it's different from the normal calendar. The Thai New Year is celebrated on April 13.On this day,Thai people play with water, throwing it on each other. It is intended to bring good luck during the New Year ahead.
In China, the more favorable New Year is usually celebrated in February according to lunar calendar (陰歷).On New Year's Eve,all family members sit together at table, enjoying lots of auspicious foods such as dumplings, chicken to bring good luck.

10.Almost every day I hear a friend-or a patient-talk about being"addicted"to something:chocolate, exercise, email,a TV show. Are these really addictions? No,if you follow the classic definition of addiction. Why?Let me explain:Addiction means being psychologically and physically dependent on something. However,a compulsion is just a strong desire to do something, which you find difficult to control.Though it can be serious, yet you won't get physically ill when you quit it.
Take one of my patients Kate, who often spoke of her shoe addiction,as an example. She said she had many more shoes than she could use or afford, and she found it nearly impossible to pass up a pair that caught her eye. When she was stressed out,she bought shoes. When she felt sad,she bought shoes. If Kate forced herself not to buy shoes for a week or two,she didn't get physically ill.But she was rarely able to resist shoe shopping for much longer than that.
Many different causes are behind the phenomena.First of all,we think there is a genetic component, since compulsive behaviors seem to happen again in families. An imbalance of chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters (神經(jīng)介質(zhì)) may also be to blame. In addition, compulsions often go hand in hand with anxiety and depression.
How do you know when it has crossed the line?Ask yourself these questions:Are you busy planning and doing the behavior? For example, are you having trouble concentrating on work because you're spending time shopping online? Is the behavior negatively affecting one or more areas of your life?Have you tried your best to stop the behavior but couldn't?If your answers are"yes",you may be struggling with a compulsive behavior and need some help.
When you find yourself having a compulsive behavior, you should start by admitting that you have a problem and thinking about what is driving the behavior. And then try to interrupt or at least postpone the behavior.Changing the way you do it is also a good idea. For example,if you can't stop eating sweets every day,try having an apple every time you want that candy bar. Finally,if you feel you need more help, consider seeing a therapist (治療專家),who will give you tools to change the actual behavior.
Addictions or compulsions?

I am a procrastinator(拖拉者).I always have been.I've tried all sorts of things to beat the habit.Here are some techniques I've been using to try to force myself to get to now:
Set aside blocks of time to do things.When I was talking with my wellness coach earlier this year,she asked me why I didn't exercise more often."(36)D,"I said."Something always comes up."She wasn't impressed."J.D.,"she said,"You have to make time.Make an appointment with yourself to run or to go for a bike ride."The same principle applies to other things you might procrastinate.
(37)C.Often I'll be sitting on the back porch reading a book,and it will occur to me that some chore needs to be done-mending the fence,for example."(38)G,"I tell myself.Wrong!What usually happens is that I forget to write it down,and even if I do,I just look at the list and procrastinate for weeks on end.The best move is to actually do the chore when I think of it.(Assuming,of course,that I have the time at that moment,which I usually do.)
Use a timer to bring you back to reality.Part of the reason I procrastinate is that I'm a day dreamer.(39)A.One way to keep on track is to use a timer.I use the Ultrak Jumbo Countdown Timer,but not as often as I should.I set it for 48minutes.When it goes off,(40)E:Am I doing what I'm supposed to be doing?

4.Do you forget to turn off the lights and heaters when you go out of a room?In 2040 it will not matter.They will turn themselves off and on again when you return.You will choose the temperature for each room,the lighting and the humidity(濕度).A sensor(感應(yīng)器)will find the presence of a human(and,with luck,ignore the dog!) and turn the systems on,and when the humans leave,it will turn them off again.
The sensors will work through the central home computer,and they will do much more than just turn the fires and lights on and off for you.They will find faulty electrical appliances(用品),plugs or switches,separate them so that they cannot harm anyone,and then warn you that they need repair.They will detect fire and if you are out of the house,the computer will call the firefighters.It will not be too difficult because the locks on the outside doors will be electronic.You will open them using your personal card-the one you use for shopping-maybe using a number known only to you.
It will be impossible to lose the key,and a housebreaker will have to tamper(胡亂擺弄)with the lock or with a window.It is not very difficult to make such tampering send a signal to the computer.
The computer will be more than a fireman-policeman-servant.It will be an entertainer,and most of your entertainment will come right into your home.It does now,of course,but by 2040"entertainment(娛樂)"will mean much more.For one thing,you will be able to take part actively,rather than just watching.

D.It is less likely to lose the key.
