Dinner parties are out of date. Alumni (畢業(yè)生,校友) album are old-fashioned. School leaving is taking on a new turn:it is going online! Graduating students at Qinghua University are saving all their joys and sorrows from university on a CD. Some are setting up their alumni records online, such as Chinaren.com and 5406.net. With computer usage and Internet access becoming even more popular, students are throwing away the traditional graduation book. Instead they are using alumni books online, in CDs or disks, electrolyzing(電解) their graduation in the e-age.
"It is much easier and safer to save." Xu Ziguo, a civil-engineer-major at Qinghua University said. Like his class, most of Qinghua's to-be graduates are using the CD alumni records and online association. Xu said CD records can save more than the actual books. Photos and videos on school activities and normal campus life, and messages may be all included in the thin plastic with the help of a CD-Writer. "Everything is so lively when I watch it, just like what is happening on campus," Xu said. Another student at the Renmin University of China, Lu Yangzhen said her class saved all the memorable messages on a disk. They use a common chat room online to communicate after graduation. Many classes will keep their homepages on campus for future communication, Lu said.
Dotcom companies are also seizing the opportunity to get more clicks. Chinaren.com said it provided improved services for the users. One service is to send group emails, meaning if a user sends an email to one address, all his or her classmates can get it at the same time. But what if the Dotcom company breaks down one day? Xu said they had left a "backup". That is to use the old way with a person working as the liaison.

We now think of chocolate as sweet, but once it was bitter. We think of it as a candy, but once it was a medicine. Today, chocolate can be a hot drink, a frozen dessert, or just a snack. Sometimes it’s an ingredient in the main course of a meal. Mexicans make a hot chocolate sauce called mole and pour it over chicken. The Mexicans also eat chocolate with spices like chili peppers.
Chocolate is a product of the tropical cacao tree. The beans taste so bitter that even the monkeys say “Ugh!” and run away. Workers must first dry and then roast the beans. This removes the bitter taste.
The word “chocolate” comes from a Mayan word. The Mayas were an ancient people who once lived in Mexico. They valued the cacao tree. Some used the beans for money, while others crushed them to make a drink.
When the Spaniards came to Mexico in the sixteenth century, they started drinking cacao too. Because the drink was strong and bitter, they thought it was a medicine. No one had the idea of adding sugar. The Spaniards took some beans back to Europe and opened cafes. Wealthy people drank cacao and said it was good for the digestion.
In the 1800s, the owner of a chocolate factory in England discovered that sugar removed the bitter taste of cacao. It quickly became a cheap and popular drink. Soon afterwards, a factory made the first solid block of sweetened chocolate. Later on, another factory mixed milk and chocolate together. People liked the taste of milk chocolate even better.

1826, a Frenchman named Niepce needed pictures for his business .But he was not a good artist. So he invented a very simple camera (照相機).He put it in a window of his house and took a picture of his garden .That was the first photo.
The next important date in the history of photography was 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his studio. He used a new kind of camera and a different processs. In his pictures, you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest details. This kind of photograph was called a daguerreotype.
Soon, other people began to use Daguerre's process. Travellers brought back daguerreotypes from all around the world. People photographed famous buildings, cities and mountains.
In about 1840, the process was improved. Now photographers could take pictures of people and moving things. The process was not simple. The photographers had to carry lots of film and processing equipment. But this did not stop the photographers, especially in the United States, where from the 1840s daguerreotype artists were popular in most cities.
Mathew Brady was a well-known American photographer. He took many pictures of famous people. The pictures were unusual because they were very life-like and full of personality.
Brady was also the first person to take pictures of war. His 1862 Civil War pictures showed dead soldiers and ruined cities. They made the war seem more real and more terrible.
In the 1880s, new inventions began to change photography. Photographers could buy film readymade in rolls. So they did not have to make the film immediately. They could bring it back to their studios and develop it later, meaning that they did not have to carry lots of equipment. And finally, the invention of the small handheld camera made photography less expensive.
With the small camera, anyone could be a photographer. People began to use cameras just for fun. They took pictures of their families, friends and favourite places. They called these pictures "snapshots".
Photographs became very popular in newspapers in the 1890s. Soon magazines and books also used documentary photographs. These pictures showed true events and people. They were much more real than drawings.

Before going outside in the morning, many of us check a window thermometer (溫度計) for the temperature. This helps us decide what to wear.    1    We want our food to be a certain coldness in the refrigerator. We want it a certain hotness in the oven. If we don’t feel well, we use a thermometer to see if we have a fever. We keep our rooms a certain warmth in the winter and a certain coolness in the summer.
Not all the thermometers use the same system to measure temperature. We use a system called the Fahrenheit scale. But most other countries use the Centigrade scale.
Both systems use the freezing and boiling points of water as their guide.     2
The most common kind of thermometer is made with mercury (水銀) inside a clear glass tube. As mercury ( or any other liquid ) becomes hot, it expands. As it gets colder, it contracts (收縮) . That is why on hot days the mercury line is high in the glass tube.     3
First, take a clear glass juice bottle that has a cap; fill the bottle with colored water. Tap a hole in the center of the cap using a hammer and thick nail. Put the cap on the jar. Then stick a plastic straw (吸管) through the nail hole.
     4
Finally, place a white card on the outside of the bottle and behind the straw. Now you can see the water level easily.
     5
As the temperature goes down, the water will contract, and the level in the straw will come down. Perhaps you will want to keep a record of the water level in the straw each morning for a week.
A.      We use and depend on thermometers to measure the temperature of many other things in our daily lives.
B.      Thermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in the same way when they are heated or cooled.
C.      Now that you know this rule you can make a thermometer of your own that will work.
D.      The water will rise in the straw. As the temperature of the air goes up, the water will expand and rise even higher.
E.      They label these in different ways. On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. On the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees.
F.      Take wax ( you may use an old candle if you have one ) and melt some of it right where the straw is stuck into the cap to seal them together.
G.      People use thermometers which are made by themselves when travelling around the world.
