To many web-building spiders, most of whom are nearly blind, the web is their essential window on the world: their means of communicating, capturing prey, meeting mates and protecting themselves. A web-building spider without its web is like a men cast away on an island of solid rock, totally out of touch and destined to starve to death. So important is the web to an orb-web spider's survival that the animal will continue to construct new webs daily even if it is being starved. For 16 days the starving spider builds completely normal webs. Then, as the animal gets scrawnier, it constructs a wider-meshed (網(wǎng)孔、網(wǎng)眼)web using fewer strands(線). Such webs would only trap larger prey, which is more economical from the perspective of a starving spider. The spider stores energy by recycling web protein. It simply eats its own web each evening and reuses it to produce new silk. In studies with radioactivity, labeled materials, it was found that 95 percent of web protein reappears in the next day web. Most of the energy needed for web-building is used in walking over the strands as they are laid down. Scientists are impressed by the adaptability of the spider's highly preprogrammed brain, which is larger for its size than the brain of any other invertebrate(無脊推動物). If web-building is interrupted, or if some of the existing strands are destroyed, the spider simply goes back to see where the web is left off and then finishes building a normal web. One spider will finish building the incomplete web of another

To many web-building spiders, most of whom are nearly blind, the web is their essential window on the world: theirmeans of communicating, capturing prey, meeting mates and protecting themselves. A web-building spider without its web is like a men cast away on an island of solid rock, totally out of touch and destined to starve to death.
2.C 細(xì)節(jié)理解:根據(jù)A web-building spider without its web is like a men cast away on an island of solid rock, totally out of touch and destined to starve to death.
For 16 days the starving spider builds completely normal webs. Such webs would only trap larger prey, which is more economical from the perspective of a starving spider.
4.A 細(xì)節(jié)理解根據(jù)Scientists are impressed by the adaptability of the spider's highly preprogrammed brain,蜘蛛的高度預(yù)編好的大腦的適應(yīng)性給科學(xué)家們留下了深刻印象。

What time is it?Most people are pretty accurate in their answer. And if you don’t know for sure, it’s very likely that you can find out. There may be a watch on your wrist; there may be a clock on the wall, desk, or computer screen; or maybe you’re riding in a car that has a clock in the dashboard .

Even if you don’t have a timepiece of some sort nearby, your body keeps its own beat. Humans have an internal clock that regulates (調(diào)節(jié)) the beating of our heart, the peace of our breathing, the discharge (排出) of chemicals within our bloodstream, and many other bodily functions.

Time is something from which we can’t escape. Even if we ignore it, it’s still going by, ticking away, second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour. So the main issue in using your time well is, “who’s in charge?” We can allow time to slip by and let it be our enemy. Or we can take control of it and make it our ally.

By taking control of how you spend your time, you'll increase your chances of becoming a more

successful student. Perhaps more importantly, the better you are at managing the time you devote to your

studies, the more time you'll have to spend on your outside interests.

The aim of time management is not to schedule every moment so we become slaves of a timetable that

governs every waking moment of the day. Instead, the aim is to make informed choices as to how we use

our time. Rather than letting the day go by, largely without our awareness, what we are going to discuss

next can make us better able to control time for our own purposes.

1.The underlined word “ally” in Para.3 most likely means somebody or something that is ________.

A. your slave and serves you

B. your supporter an helps you

C. under your control and obeys you

D. under your influence and follows you

2.The author intends to tell us that time ________.

A. could be regulated by a timepiece such as a clock or a watch

B. could be managed by the internal clock by human bodies

C. should be well managed for our own interest

D. should be saved for outside interests

3.In the next part, the author would most probably discuss with you ________.

A. how to keep up with the times        B. how to make up for lost time

C. how to have a good time             D. how to make good use of time

The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem(生態(tài)系統(tǒng)). Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.

It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and under-bushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.

Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.

What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.

1.What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean?

A.Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.

B.The eating habit of African elephants.

C.Disappearance of African elephants.

D.The effect of African elephants’ search for food.

4.What do we know about the open spaces in the passage?

A.They are home to many endangered animals.

B.They result from the destruction of rain forests.

C.They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.

It has always been said that women are not good drivers, because they simply don't have very good driving ability. On the other hand, most car accidents happen to men; very few happen to women.

From this, we can see that women are much more careful while driving. Another very interesting fact that we should point out is that in the past, women preferred to let their husbands be the only driver in the family rather than have a driving license. Somehow they were prevented from making this step in their lives, but nowadays there are many women that want to pass their driving tests from an early age.

However, we have to admit that men are more skillful drivers than women, but this does not mean that a woman cannot become a good driver by accumulating (積累) experience. So more and more teenagers and women around the age of thirty now want to pass their driving tests. While taking their driving lessons, they also have a number of special lessons with their parents or somebody in the family that has a driving license, this is just to improve their driving abilities and help them to pass the tests more easily.

To conclude, we can say that women are not such bad drivers. They just need more experience than men in order to be able to drive well. And on the other hand, there are a number of women that show better driving skills than the men around them.

1. Compared with the past, nowadays many women___.

A. prefer to have a driving license

B. have more accidents while driving

C. are somehow prevented from driving

D. are the only driver in the family

2.What advantage do women have over men in driving?

A. They have more skills.

B. They are much more careful

C. They know more traffic rules

D. They have more driving experience

3.What can we infer from the passage?

A. Teenage girls cannot take driving tests.

B. Men didn't allow women to drive in the past.

C. With enough experience, women can become good drivers.

D. Women can easily pass their tests by taking driving lessons.

4.The passage mainly talks about___.

A. women and their driving ability.

B. men and their driving ability.

C. why men are better drivers than women.

D. why more women like to have a driving license
