Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you're “hot”. That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak(高峰). For some people the peak comes before noon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues ( 自言自語 ) as: “Get up, John! You'll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and- energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract ( 對(duì)抗 ) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam ( 鼓起干勁 ) and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.

This story is about a 92-year-old, short, well-behaved and proud lady. She is fully dressed each morning by eight, with her hair fashionably done and makeup perfectly applied, even though she is totally blind. She is moving to a nursing home today. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.
After many hours of waiting patiently in the hall of the nursing home, she moved to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet(觀察孔) sheets that had been hung on her window.“I love it,” she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old girl having just been presented with a new puppy.
“Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room yet. Just wait.” “That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged, it’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up.”

Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away, just for this time in my life. Old age is like a bank account, you withdraw(收回) from what you’ve put in. So, my advice to you would be to deposit(儲(chǔ)蓄) a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories. I wrote to the White House asking about a birthday greeting for my grandfather who will be 95 next year. I received a card signed by Bill and Hillary. They look like real signatures(簽名)and are not printed and they are probably produced by autographing(親筆簽名)machines. That says:
Happy Birthday!
Hillary and I are delighted to join your friends and family in congratulating you on this special day. As you look forward to the year ahead, please accept our best wishes for good health and much future happiness.
This was sent in a double envelope so that I could address the inner one to my grandfather and send the sealed(蓋章) card to him. The card has the presidential seal printed in gold. The outer envelop is hand addressed.
NOTE: the postage meter impression on the outer envelope reminded me that the president does not have franking privileges.(郵資特權(quán))
The outer envelope does have a little "B" written on the upper right corner indication that they have a pile of these pre-signed and double-enveloped; when a request comes in, they just write the address on the outer envelope and mail it.

He looks like somebody important! I remember thinking about a middle-aged man standing at a checkout counter. Something set him apart. Even the boy bagging groceries seemed to sense it. He sped up than usual as he glanced with respect at the man.
Trying to find out what was different about him, I found that he looked quite ordinary. Although he gave the impression of being tall, I could see he was actually a little shorter than average. His appearance wasn’t particularly outstanding, and he was wearing plain weekend sports attire ( 運(yùn)動(dòng)休閑裝 ). Not until the man was leaving did it strike me. He carried himself as if he were somebody worth caring about. Head up and chest out, he walked proudly from the market. I watched the other shoppers as they looked down over their baskets. And me? In the glass of the store’s side doors, I saw reflected ( 映現(xiàn) ) a worn-out housewife who looked as if she’d carried too many bags of groceries.
Suddenly, the words I’d heard my mother repeat hundreds of times as I was growing up held new meaning. “Stand up straight ! Lift yourself by pretending strings are pulling you from the tops of your ears.” I thought of myself being pulled up . I felt taller as I came nearer to the market’s doors. This time I saw reflected a woman who looked as if she knew where she was going! But as I rushed home in five o’clock traffic and tried to fix dinner before a seven o’clock meeting, my good manners disappeared. It wasn’t until the next day as I was trying on clothes in a department store that I remembered again. Each thing I put on seemed wrong. Suddenly I recalled the man in the supermarket. I lifted myself up. The dress looked nicer on me. I liked the dress! Sure enough, I looked five to seven pounds lighter. Dieting titles I’d read came to mind, such as “How to Lose Pounds in Weeks?” Now I had a new title: “How to Look Thinner in Seconds.”
