Britain's seed bank, the only one in the world aiming to collect all of the planet's wild plant species, has reached its goal of banking 10 percent by 2010.
The Millennium Seed Bank Project, run by Kew Gardens-one of the oldest botanical gardens-will
officially deposit the 24,200th species on Thursday, a pink, wild banana from China.
More than 50 countries are now on board with Kew's giant task but vast places of the globe, including India and Brazil, still need to join in and donate seeds, director Paul Smith said.
The seed bank is one of the largest and most diverse in the world with more than 1.5 billion seeds. Its
goal is to help protect the planet's biodiversity during a time of climate change.
The wild banana seed is under threat of extinction (滅絕)  in southwest China from agricultural
development. It is a vital food source for Asian elephants and important for growing bananas for human
consumption.
Stored at minus20 degrees centigrade, so they can last for thousands of years, the seeds await the day
that scientists hope never comes-when the species no longer exist in the wild.
It is a race against time, Smith said, because in the last decade alone, 20 plants held in the bank have
already been wiped out in the wild.He estimates that between a third and a quarter will become extinct this century.
"It is urgent and it is happening now.An area, the size of England, is cleared of primary vegetation
(植被) every year." Smith said.
Because most of the world's food and medicines come from nature, protecting wild plant species is
quite important, scientists say. There are already many other seed banks safeguarding food crops, which
only account for 0.6 percent of plant diversity.
For Kew's next goal-to collect a quarter of wild varieties by 2020-the botanists need 10 million pounds a year, or a further 100 million pounds on top of the 40 million they have already been granted.
1. What's the final purpose of the Britain's seed bank?
A. To collect enough money for the project.
B. To safeguard food crops.
C. To protect wild plants from extinction.
D. To help scientists study wild plants.
2. The wild banana seed in China is in danger because of________.
A. the expanding of farming work
B. the climate change in this area
C. the large number of Asian elephants
D. human's large consumption
3. We can learn from the passage that________.
A. the seeds in the bank can be used now and then all over the world
B. India and Brazil haven't joined in the Seed Bank Project at present
C. there is only one seed bank in the world at present
D. the wild plants in places like India and China will never die out
4. What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 7 refer to?
A. The extinction of plant species.
B. The Millennium Seed Bank Project.
C. Britain's seed bank.
D. Kew Gardens'next goal.
5. Which of the following information isn't mentioned in the passage?
A. The global partnership of collecting wild plant species.
B. The temperature condition of the conservative wild plant species.
C. The government's financial support for the seed bank project.
D. Scientists'concern on the extinct wild plant species.

It's you and I who are to blame for the state of the earth. No question about it. It's our life-style that is
threatening life on Earth, so we must make the changes. The good news is that many of those changes are
really quite simple, even enjoyable, but for every careful step we take as individuals, we must press
government and industry to take a big step on our benefit. And we must start now. Tomorrow's too late.
My aim this year is to persuade as many of my friends and colleagues as possible to choose the train,
and leave their cars behind too. My gardens have been pesticide (殺蟲劑)-free zones for years and I enjoy
seeing more wildlife on my doorstep as a result; I've tried to reduce my contribution to water pollution too,
by using environment-friendly, phosphate (磷)-free washing powder, and by no longer thinking of the toilet
as a suitable waste-disposal (處理) point.
I ran after a young lady through town recently to give her back the piece of paper she had carelessly
thrown away. She disappeared into a shop, and when I followed her inside and made my presentation, she
was doubly embarrassed-she worked there, and the boss gave her a ticking-off too. I've started asking
fellow drivers at gas stations why they aren't using unleaded (無鉛的) petrol. These are small things, but
we have to start somewhere, and every little does help.
1. To help the environment, the author is trying to do everything mentioned below EXCEPT _____.
[     ]
A. taking the train instead of a car
B. throwing away the old cars
C. avoiding the use of pesticides
D. running after those who throw articles carelessly
2. The author ran after a woman through town because he wanted _____.
[     ]
A. to find out where she worked
B. to give her back the piece of paper she had lost
C. to tell her not to throw away pieces of paper carelessly
D. to ask her to pay him for picking up the piece of paper.
3. The word "ticking-off" in the last paragraph probably means _____.
[     ]
A. blaming
B. a piece of paper
C. prize
D. ticket
4. The purpose of this passage is to _____.
[     ]
A. persuade his friends to take the train
B. inform us of the good news
C. make clear who is responsible for the environment
D. try to advise us all to protect our environment

Emily and Madison were having a great time on their field trip. After a morning at the science museum
they went to their favorite fast food place. Emily got her food first. When Madison sat down next to her,
Emily couldn't believe her eyes. Madison had two hamburgers, three containers of French fries, an apple
pie, a soda, and a shake on her tray.
"Why do you have so much food?" Emily asked. "I'm so tired of being really skinny (極瘦的)," Madison
said,"so I've decided to eat lots of food and try to gain weight."
Trying to gain weight by stuffing (塞, 填) yourself with extra calories like Madison did is a bad idea. It
can make you sick if you're naturally short or thin- so just listen to your appetite (胃口) and eat only as
much as your body tells you to. Once in a while, a health problem can keep a kid from gaining weight. The
kid usually goes to a specialist who can check things out, or to a registered dietitian (飲食學(xué)家) who has
lots of tips on how to eat well. But most of the time, thin kids don't need to see a doctor or go on a special
diet.
Here's another surprise. Kids who are thin need to exercise. A lot of people use exercise to keep their
weight under control or to lose weight. But exercise serves many other purposes, too. Moving around helps
you develop important skills and helps your body get stronger. And unless a kid has gone through puberty
(青春期), weight-lifting won't build bigger muscles. It also could hurt bones, joints, and muscles.
You want to help your body, not hurt it. Treat it right and you'll grow and develop just the way you
should.
1. The opening part of this passage about Emily and Madison is used to _____.
A. tell us that Emily was not pleased with Madison
B. introduce the topic of gaining weight
C. suggest that Emily and Madison often went to their field trip
D. tell us that Emily and Madison were close friends
2. If you are short and thin as you should you'd better _____.
A. eat as much as you want to every day
B. see a doctor as soon as possible
C. force yourself to eat more every day
D. eat as much as you can to gain weight
3. Which one of the following is TRUE according to this passage?
A. Only fat people need to exercise to lose weight.
B. Madison should have much food because she was thin.
C. Thin people also need to exercise.
D. You must be ill if you are too thin or too short.
4. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. The thinner You Are the More You Should Eat.
B. Emily and Madison - Two Close Friends.
C. The Thinner You Are the Better You Will Be.
D. What Should You Do if You Are Thin?

Diet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, fat diet, vegetable diet. surrounded by the word "diet" everyw we look
and listen. We have so easily attracted by the promise and potential of   diet products that we have
stopped thinking about what diet
products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically
(身體上).
Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brains to
admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of
fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the  thinking stage and go straight
for the scale c秤) instead. All  we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word "diet" in  food labels.
On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie
drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that
we don-t have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and
that life  can be without resistance and struggle.
The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us. but also in the
physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm  our bodies because consuming them instead
of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients (營養(yǎng)成分). Diet foods
and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these
wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are
potentially dangerous.
Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about
buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of medicals. Once we realize this,
we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological and physical
harm that comes from using them.

A. diet products fail to bring out people's potential
B. people have difficulties in choosing diet products

A. try out a variety of diet foods
B. hesitate before they enjoy diet foods
C. pay attention to their own eating habits

C. diet products bring no pain
D. diet products are free from calories
4. Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products _____.

The physicians in a hospital form the center of medical staff. But they could not
provide effective medical care to their patients without the help of numerous other
medical employees. From the viewpoint of the patients, the nursing staff is particularly
important. Nurses are usually in close contact with patients as long as they are in the
hospital.
A nurse does not study for as many years as a doctor. however , each must be equally
dedicated. Caring for sick persons requires a great deal of patience and concern. Most
nurses work long days, and they often must work at odd hours or during the night.
Under the supervision (監(jiān)管) of the head nurse, the nursing staff must provide nursing
services on a 24-hour basis and attend to patients' needs. This responsibility continues
around the clock, and so nurses must work in shifts. A shift is a period of duty, usually
eight in length. The nurses on the ward rotate their shifts. Some take turns working night
duty; others work odd shifts.
A nurse must always be alert. She can never afford to be careless. This is true in all

intensive care are critically ill, and they must be monitored at all times. The nurses who
do intensive care duty have one of the most demanding jobs in the hospital.

"In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight."
"Two full inches in the first three days!"
These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising
new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of products say
they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to add to beauty or
desirability.
Often such products are nothing more than moneymaking things for their promoters. The results they
produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.
To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to
understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA(Food and Drug
Administration)can require proof under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that is safe and effective
before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require
premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health,
FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take
legal action, including seizure(查封)of the product.
One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had
been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through
contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds
that it was dangerous to health and life.
Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings
(法律訴訟), and new devices appear continually. Before buying, it is up to the consumer to judge the
safety or effectiveness of such items.
1. It can be inferred that the ads mentioned in the text are________.
A. objective
B. costly
C. unreliable
D. illegal
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. The court is in charge of removing dangerous products.
B. New products are more likely to be questionable.
C. The production of a device must be approved by FDA.
D. The promoters usually just care about profits.
3. FDA can ask for the proof of safety and effectiveness of a product________.
A. if it is a drug
B. if it is a device
C. if its consumers make complaints
D. if its distributors challenge FDA's authority

In one of the strongest indications of the power of the mind to influence the body, a growing
collection of evidence finds that people who are depressed have a greatly higher risk of developing
heart disease.
In a study of almost 3,000 men and 5,000 women, depressed men were 70 per cent more likely to
develop coronary (心臟的) heart disease than those who weren't depressed. While depressed women
were just 12 per cent more likely to develop heart disease, those who were severely depressed were
78 per cent more likely. In fact, a 1998 study found that women who are depressed have a risk of dying
from heart disease equal to that of women who smoke or who have high blood pressure.
The link works the other way around, too: While about 1 in 20 American adults experience major
depression in a given year, that number jumps to about one in three among those who have survived a
heart attack.
The more severe the depression, the more dangerous it is to your health. But some studies suggest
that even mild depression, including feelings of hopelessness experienced over many years, may damage
the heart. Other studies suggest depression may affect how well heart disease medications work.
Researchers aren't sure what the connection between depression and heart disease is, but theories exist.
One is that people who are depressed tend not to take very good care of themselves. They're more
likely to eat high-fat, high-calorie "comfort" foods, less likely to exercise, and more likely to smoke. But
beyond lifestyle, there is probably also a physiological link between depression and heart disease.
Recent studies found that people with severe, depression tended to have a lack of heart-healthy 0-3
fatty acids. People who are depressed also often have high levels of stress hormones (荷爾蒙). These
keep the body primed for fight or flight, raising blood pressure and causing the heart to beat faster, all
of which put additional stress on coronary arteries (動脈) and prevent the body's natural healing
mechanisms from working properly.
A whole branch of medicine is devoted to the complex links between mental health, the nervous
system, the hormone system and so on. This science is gradually sorting out how the mind-body
connection affects us, or defenses against heart disease.
Generally, an estimated 10 per cent of American adults experience some form of depression every
year. Although available treatments can ease symptoms in more than 80 per cent of people treated, less
than half of those with depression get the help they need.

B. Depression, which is mild, can possibly cause damage to your health.
C. Most people who experience depression get treated as they should be.
D. Depression may have some influence on the function of heart disease medication.
3. According to the passage, the possible connections between heart disease and depression are the
following EXCEPT ______
A. depressed ones tend to eat high-fat and high-calories foods, which leads to physical damage to heart
B. severe heart disease may cause people to feel hopeless and depressed
