Glenn was born on July 18,1921, in Cambridge and grew up in nearby New Concord, Ohio. He started his flying career as a fighter pilot(飛行員). Later, Glenn took a dangerous job as a test pilot, flying new planes to see if they were safe.
In the late 1950s, a “space race” began between the U. S. and the Soviet Union. Both countries wanted to be the first to send a human into space, including to the moon. In 1961, a Russian astronaut, Yuri Gagarin, orbited Earth. But the space race was not over yet. Glenn’s chance to go into space came on February 20, 1962. By that time, another American, Alan B. Shepard, had flown in space, but he had not orbited Earth. Glenn’s flight was aired live on television and radio. Americans everywhere stopped to watch.
Glenn’s Friendship 7 capsule circled the planet three times. A faulty equipment led Glenn to believe the capsule might burn up on its return to Earth, but in the end it splashed down safely in the Atlantic Ocean. He became the first American to orbit Earth in a spaceship.
In 1984, Glenn ran for president, but he did not get enough support and dropped out of the race. Glenn returned to space on October 29, 1998, when he was 77. He spent nine days on the space shuttle Discovery. Glenn went so that scientists could the effects of space travel on older people. He holds the record for being the oldest person in space. Glenn died Thursday, Dec, 8,2016, at the age of 95.
Glenn refused to see himself as a hero. He preferred to focus on his work, saying. “If there is one thing I’ve learned in my years on this planet, it’s that the happiest people I’ve known are those who devoted themselves to something bigger and more meaningful than merely their own self-interest.”

Olympic gold medalist Morolake Akinosun walked through the halls of her high school in Illinois in the US, surprised at how little had changed at her old high school other than the green color on the walls.
Akinosun won her medal with the 400-meter relay team at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro this summer. Her return to her high school recently included a chance for the young woman to tell what she’s learned since running track for Wsubonsie more than fours year ago.
Her first piece of advice to the crowd of students was asking them to listen to their parents. “ They see things you can't see,” she said. “ In high school I thought I was on the top of the world.”
In Akinosun’s case, her parents encouraged her to consider going to the University of Illinois, which at the time had a team that was coached by Olympic medal winner Tonja Buford-Bailey. “ I wouldn’t be where I am today without my parents,” she said.
Her parents saw Buford-Bailey as a good fit to coach their daughter, something Akinosun said she didn’t understand at the time. It didn’t take long, however, for her to see they were right and she ended up following Buford-Bailey to the University of Texas at Austin when the coach took a job there. Akinosun admitted it was three years before she told her parents they were right.
Becoming an excellent athlete who can take part in the Olympics needs serious dedication. She says her success came from viewing herself as an athlete-student instead of a student-athlete.
“I always put track and field first, and then comes school,” Akinosun said. A social life comes last.“It’s about sacrifices(犧牲). You can’t be on the track team unless you’re chosen,” she added.
Making athletics the most important thing in her life meant devoting her time and energy fully, no matter how she might feel on a given day. “ I never missed a training session (環(huán)節(jié)) in my four years in college,” she said. “It’s my job; it’s what I do. Think about that when you want to sleep in.”
1.Which of the following statements is TRUE about Akinosun according to the article?
A. She was a big fan of Buford-Bailey in high school.
B. She make up her mind to win Olympic gold medals in high school.
C. She still doesn’t want to admit that her parents helped her a lot.
D. She is thankful to her parents for finding her the right coach.
2.According to Akinosun, she became a successful athlete because ______.
A. she had great confidence in herself.
B. she always put training before anything else.
C. she was pushed by her coach to train hard.
D. she could keep a good balance between school and training.
3.The underlined word “dedication” in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. a strong desire B. knowing oneself
C. a clear purpose D. devoting her time and energy fully
4.What’s the best title of the passage?
A. How Akinosun spent her high school years.
B. The story of Akinosun’s success.
C. Being an athlete is not easy.
D. Akinosun’s advice to her schoolmates.

Nowadays, the destruction of forests is one of most serious environment problems. From that I understand, people are destroying thousands of square kilometers of trees every day. This is killing hundreds of wild animals live in the forests. But something must be done. Unfortunately, we don’t do everything to protect the forests.
People who cut down trees should go to prison. That’s what happens in some country to people who sell plastic bags. That’s what should happened to people who destroy the forests. I can’t help but to think that we must protect wildlife for future generations. Hopeful, our children will be even much responsible than we are today.

Shopping is one of the best ways to relax after a stressful week. Nothing is more satisfying than finding a perfect item -- and when I’ m bored with shopping for clothes I move on to make-up and shoes. I never shop in sales -- the reason the items haven’ t sold at full price is usually because they are badly made or horrible colours.
--Blanca
I hate shopping and it bores me enormously. I really cannot understand such a useless and expensive habit. I only shop for clothes when I can’ t get out of it and when I do, I make sure I buy good quality and as much as I can afford, to put off having to go again for as long as possible. I have friends who will spend a Whole day going from shop to shop trying on lots of different clothes and not buying anything. That’s really stupid.
--Pam
I can’ t see the point in spending a lot of money on clothes, when they are so much cheaper abroad. I do most of my shopping when I go on holiday, and get great clothes for half the price. I love finding bargains! I also buy a lot in sales. The clothes may be out of fashion a bit, but they’ re good quality, and if you wait long enough, they come back into fashion!
--Meghan
I personally still spend half of my wage on clothes. I usually only ever wear something three times before I throw it in the back of my wardrobe (衣櫥). I never wear a party dress more than once. If I lost my job and couldn’t afford to buy lots of clothes, I would never be able to go out of the house again.
--Shelly

Volunteering Is Fun
One afternoon I was sitting at home feeling so bored. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I wanted to meet people and have new experiences so I decided to start volunteering. I searched on my computer and found a website where I could volunteer on a farm in France.
My time working on a farm was a new experience for me. It was basically a free holiday as food and accommodation were provided. However, it was not your typical holiday as I had to look after fifteen horses and sleep at the top of a tower in a castle! I was an awful farmer but it did not matter because I made some great friends.
However, you do not need to go abroad to volunteer. I have had plenty of adventures at home as volunteering can become a hobby. For example, I love singing so I had a good laugh waving my arms in an attempt to conduct my local choir. I did slowly improve and it felt great to conduct the choir in a concert. At university, I organised a concert for charity with my friends. It was really fun finding hands and raising money for a cause we believe in.
It is true that you feel good volunteering but there are also other advantages. I once vol-unteered as a server at a charity sports event where the organizers gave me cupcakes to thank me for my services. I also volunteered in a charity shop so I found loads of nice cheap clothes to update my wardrobe (衣柜).
While this is all fun, my favourite aspect of volunteering is creating and sharing stories. My terrible attempts at farming have given me hilarious stories to tell! Talking to volunteers from different countries and backgrounds has also helped me learn more about the world. I feel thankful to have had so much fun with many nice people thanks to volunteering.
