Health

A recent survey shows that the health of the students in our school has been going from bad to worse in the past three years. The number of short-sighted students has increased from 77% in 2010 to 93.5% in 2013, while that of overweight students from 38% to 57.2%. Nearly 15% more students don’t have enough sleep because of more homework. Besides, over 21% more students become mentally unhealthy.
It seems to me that the reasons for this lie in heavier burden of study and more homework, thus making students unable to spare any time to take exercise or have enough sleep. To improve students’ health, we call for less homework. Only in this way can students get plenty of sleep and be more healthy. Proper diets and exercise should also be paid attention to so that they won’t easily put on weight. With their heavy burdens removed, students can then keep in normal mental health.

Kids undergo a large amount of pressure and stress during their school exams, which can often become quite overwhelming (to much) for them. It may be the first experience of stress, at this level, they have ever experienced and therefore quite frightening. Yes, you may say that it's all a part of growing up and therefore good lessons for them to learn, and to an extent I agree with you. However, it’s important to learn how to prepare for life’s challenges so that they aren’t overwhelming or scary and so that we are able to manage them the best we can.

Here are some tips you can use during your kids exam time.

Break their revision plan down into small parts. Doing this will help transform what once seemed like a huge impossible task into a more manageable one.

Help them arrange properly so that the subjects they like the least (perhaps ones that require more time and effort) are worked on first; once they are out of the way, it will help reduce the worry.

Plan week on week to make sure they are on track. Ticking items of a list each week will help them to feel good about themselves and their progress.

Create rewards for all the ticks - a favourite TV programme, a delicious snack, an hour’s surfing the Internet, computer games or whatever it was that they enjoy the most. This will encourage them to carry on and make them feel good.

Think of strategies on how to deal with exams calmly so their anxieties don't get the better of them.

Talk about times in their lives when they had been successful at something and look at the qualities they used to get them there - determination, persistence, hard work, patience, positivity, dedication - discuss how they can apply these skills to their exams.

Acknowledge that if they do their best that is good enough.

Ensure they realize that this period in their lives will pass and that exams are only a temporary time in their lives; nothing can and does last forever.

Ensure they keep their eye on the prize: enjoying their long summer holiday when the exams are finished; giving them something to look forward to will help to motivate them and provide a positive end in sight.

1.According to paragraph 1, it’s important to learn how to prepare for exams because___.

A. it is a part of growing up.

B. It is the first experience of stress

C. it helps kid release stress and do better.

D. it is important to get a good mark in exams.

2.Which subjects should be worked on first?

A. Their best ones. B. Their favourite ones.

C. the easiest ones D. the most difficult ones

3.According to the passage, which of the following is true?

A. Kid should become aware of the importance of exams.

B. Kids should learn to deal with exam pressure independently.

C. Parents should keep their kids away from entertainment.

D. Parents should care about the psychological development of children.

Family Values

To understand a nation, you should first get to know its minimum unit-family.1.

In the US, upon reaching an appropriate age, children are encouraged, but not forced, to “l(fā)eave the nest” and begin an independent life.2. Parents do not arrange marriages for their children, nor do children usually ask permission of their parents to get married.Young adults meet their future spouses(配偶)through other friends, at jobs, and in organizations and religious institutions.Although children choose their own spouses, they still hope their parents will approve of their choices.

Parents feel that children should make major life decisions by themselves in many families.A parent may try to influence a child to follow a particular profession but the child is free to choose another job.3. A son may deliberately decide not to go into his father’s business because of a fear that he will lose his independence in his father’s workplace. This independence from parents is not an indication that parents and children do not love each other.Strong love between parents and children is universal and this is no exception in the American family.

4. It is not like we Chinese.Parents are rulers and masters. We Chinese love our parents with fear and total respect. In America, children always have their own opinions and even can talk about some sensitive problems with their parents, like family financial situation, the relationship between mother and father, and even sex.

5. Therefore, it is contrary that, on one hand, Americans admire independence and equality that they don’t want to make sacrifice to make up a family, but on the other hand, Americans thing highly of family in their value system.

A.In the American family, children and parents are equal.

B.It can reflect the traditional values and customs of a nation.

C.When it comes to big problems, children do not have to always follow their parents’ ways.

D.After children leave home, they often find social relationship and financial support outside the family.

E.Although Americans pay much attention to independence and equality, they don’t believe in making sacrifice.

F.Sometimes children do precisely the opposite of what their parents wish in order to declare their independence.

G.Many of them are expected to leave what could be life’s most important decision - marriage almost entirely up to luck.

Space is where our future is — trips to the Moon, Mars and beyond. Most people would think that aside from comets(彗星) and stars, there is little else out there. But, since our space journey started we have left so much trash(垃圾) there that scientists are now concerned that if we don't clean it up, we may all be in mortal (致命的)danger.

The first piece of space junk was created in 1964, when the American satellite Vanguard I stopped operating and lost its connection with the ground center. However, since it kept orbiting around the Earth without any consequences, scientists became increasingly comfortable abandoning(拋棄) things that no longer served any useful purpose in space.

It is estimated (估計(jì))that there are now over 500,000 pieces of man-made trash orbiting the Earth at speeds of up to 17,500 miles per hour. The junk varies from tiny pieces of paint chipped off rockets to cameras, huge fuel tanks, and even odd items like the million-dollar tool kit that astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn Piper lost during a spacewalk.

The major problem with the space trash is that it may hit working satellites and damage traveling spacecraft(飛船). Moreover, pieces of junk may collide(碰撞) with each other and break into pieces which fall back to the Earth. To avoid this, scientists have invented several ways for clearing the sky. Ground stations have been built to monitor larger pieces of space trash to prevent them from crashing into working satellites or space shuttles. Future plans include a cooperative effort among many nations to stop littering in space and to clean up the trash already there.

1.What was the first piece of man-made space trash?

A. A camera.B. A tool kit.

C. A fuel tank. D. A broken satellite.

2.Why were scientists NOT concerned about space trash in the beginning?

A. It no longer served any useful purpose.

B. It was millions of miles away from the Earth.

C. It did not cause any problems.

D. It was regarded as similar to comets and stars.

3. Which of the following statements is true about space junk?

A. It is huge, heavy machines.

B. It never changes position.

C. It floats slowly around the Earth.

D. It may cause problems for space shuttles.

4. What has been done about the space trash problem?

A, Scientists have cleaned up most of the trash.

B. Large pieces of space trash are being closely watched.

C. Many nations have worked together to stop polluting space.

D. Ground stations are built to help store the trash properly in space.

People often say that Money talks. They mean that a person with a lot of money can say how he or she wants things done. But it is not easy to earn enough money to gain this kind of power.

Ask anyone in business. They will tell you that it is a jungle out there. The expression probably began because a jungle is filled with wild animals and unknown dangers that threaten people.

People in business have to be careful if they are to survive the jungle out there. They must not be led into making bogus investments. Bogus means something that is not real.

Nobody is sure how the word got started. But it began to appear in American newspapers in the 1800s. A newspaper in Boston, Massachusetts, said the word came from a criminal whose name was Borghese. Borghese wrote checks to people although he did not have enough money in the bank. After he wrote the checks, he would disappear. So, people who were paid with his checks received nothing. The newspaper said Americans shortened and changed the criminal’s name Borghese to Bogus.

People trying to earn money must be also aware of the risk of being ripped off. A writer for a magazine said he first saw the expression used in 1971. It was on a sign that a student carried during a protest demonstration at a university. The message on the sign was that the student felt cheated.

To be successful, a person in business works hard and tries to get down to brass tacks. This expression means to get to the bottom or the most important of something. For example, a salesman may talk about his product without saying the price. You get down to brass tacks when you say, “it sounds good, but how much does it cost?”

Word expert Charles Funk thinks the expression comes from sailors on ships. They clean the bottom of a boat. When they have removed all the dirt, they are down to the copper pieces that hold the ship together. So, if we get down to brass tacks, we can prevent rip-offs and bogus ways of earning money in that jungle out there. And, some good luck will help, too.

1.Why do people say money talks?

A. Because money can tell us something.

B. Because the rich tend to decide a thing.

C. Because everyone loves to have money.

D. Because it is hard to earn money.

2.My uncle is in a jungle out there, which means .

A. he is a success in his own business

B. he will face many difficulties soon

C. he will fight against wild animals

D. he is interested to go through a jungle

3.Borghese is considered to be a criminal .

A. because he used the word “bogus” for the first time

B. because he was accused of writing false checks

C. because he didn’t have enough money in the bank

D. because he disappeared after he paid some checks

4.When you ask how much it cost, it means .

A. you are always caring about money

B. you declare you won’t be cheated

C. you care nothing about the quality

D. you get down to the real issues

5.It can be inferred from the passage that .
