(2007年普通高等學校夏季招生考試英語(全國Ⅱ))C

Odland remembers like it was yesterday working in an expensive French restaurant in Denver. The ice cream he was serving fell onto the white dress of a rich and important woman.

Thirty years have passed, but Odland can’t get the memory out of his mind, nor the woman’s kind reaction (反應) . She was shocked, regained calmness and, in a kind voice, told the young Odland. “It’s OK. It wasn’t your fault.” When she left the restaurant, she also left the future Fortune 500 CEO (總裁) with a life lesson: You can tell a lot about a person by the way he or she treats the waiter.

Odland isn’t the only CEO to have made this discovery. Rather, it seems to be one of those few laws of the land that every CEO learns on the way up. It’s hard to get a dozen CEO’s to agree about anything, but most agree with the Waiter Rule. They say how others treat the CEO says nothing. But how others treat the waiter is like a window into the soul.

Watch out for anyone who pulls out the power card to say something like, “I could but this place and fire you,” or“I know the owner and I could have you fired.” Those who say such things have shown more about their character(人品) than about their wealth and Power.

The CEO who came up with it, or at least first wrote it down, is Raytheon CEO Bill Swanson. He wrote a best-selling book called, Swanson’s Unwritten Rules of Management.

“A person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter, or to others, is not a nice person,” Swanson says. “I will never offer a job to the person who is sweet to the boss but turns rode to someone cleaning the tables.”

49. What happened after Odland dropped the ice cream onto the woman’s dress?

A. He was fired.                             B. He was blamed.

C. The woman comforted him.                 D. The woman left the restaurant at once.

50. Odland leaned one of his life lessons from ________.

A. his experience as a waiter.            B. the advice given by the CEOs

C. an article in Fortune                    D. an interesting best-selling book

51. According to the text, most CEOs have the same opinion about __________.

A. Fortune 500 companies                      B. the Management Rules

C. Swanson’s book                                D. the Waiter Rule

52. From the text can learn that __________.

A. one should be nicer to important people         B. CEOs often show their power before others

C. one should respect others no matter who they are

D. CEOs often have meals in expensive restaurants

Watching television makes it easier for toddlers(學走路的孩子)to kick and scream, according to a U.S. study. Children under two should not watch any TV. The longer they sit in front of the box, the worse their behavior becomes.

Just having the TV on in the background, even if the child wasn’t watching it, was also connected to troublemaking behavior although the relationship wasn’t as strong, said the researchers.

“Parents should be smart about TV use,” researcher Jennifer Manganello from the University at Albany, New York, said.

“They should limit the time that children use TV, pay attention to the content of TV programs, and consider how TV is used throughout the home.”

The study looked at 3,128 women from 20 U.S. cities who had a child between 2005 and 2008.

While there was some diversity(差異)of education among the women, one-third hadn’t graduated from high school.

Two-thirds of the mothers said their three-year-old watched more than two hours of TV a day, and the average(平均的)viewing time for children was around three hours. On average, the TV was on for about five additional hours on a common day.

After accounting for factors(因素)such as living in a violent neighborhood, scientists also found watching TV was strongly connected to behavior such as hitting others, having angry moods, being disobedient(不服從的), and screaming a lot.

The researchers thought that children may see violence on TV, and spend less time on positive development tasks such as reading or playing.

The American Academy of Paediatrics suggests no TV at all for children at two and younger, and two hours a day or less for older kids.

A.Children can watch good programs.

B.Children will be affected as long as the TV is on.

C.It’s OK that the TV is on if children don’t watch it.

D.Children’s troublemaking behavior is mainly caused by watching TV.

3.what can be learned about the study between 2005~2008 from the passage?

A.The TV was on for about three hours.

C.The study included men and women.

D.Most women allowed their child to watch TV.

4.Children who spend much time watching TV will ________.

A.not be hit by others

“Dad! He took a book without paying!” I yelled.

My father looked surprised. Before the boy could say anything, his mother grabbed his arm and shook it. “Is it true? You stole? Tell me!”

Everyone was quiet. The boy began to cry, and he nodded his head. He pulled out the comic book (漫畫書) from under his shirt.

“Oh, Mr. Kim. I am sorry! My Ted made a big mistake!” Mrs. Diaz told my father. She tried to take the comic book, but Ted wouldn’t let go.

“It’s OK. He can keep it,” my father said with a smile.

“Oh no,” Mrs. Diaz said. “Let me pay right now ...” She dug in her purse. “How much?”

         “Three seventy-five.”

Mrs. Diaz’s eyes widened, and she dug deeper. I saw her mouth make a small line. “Three seventy-five?” she asked.

“It’s OK. You can pay later,” my father said.

As they left, Ted looked back, and though he still seemed sad, he stuck out (伸出) his tongue at me.
