We all agree that we should recycle more — at home, in the office or when out and about. But for materials to be recycled, they first need to find their way to the right waste stream. 1 This is what the process of sorting allows us to do.

For effective recycling we need effective sorting. And this needs to happen first, in our own home and second, in sorting plants to which waste collected from our doorstep is taken. When you put a plastic bottle in the right recycling bin, you are helping sort recyclables. So the right material can be fed into the right recycling process. 2 They can be a loss of valuable resources from our economy.

3 For instance, in Brussels, Belgium, consumers put plastic packaging, cans and beverage cartons in blue bags designed for recyclable packaging; paper in yellow bags for recycling; and glass needs to be taken to specific collection bins. Somewhat differently, in Vienna (Austria), citizens can expect their paper, metal, glass and plastic to be separately collected in different weeks of the year. 4 In this way, they can sort their recyclables at home more effectively.

Once recyclable materials are collected from your doorstep, they are further sorted in specialized facilities which ensure the quality of the recycling process. 5 Traditionally, sorting has been done either manually with workers sorting what can be recycled and picking out the materials to be discarded or mechanically. Today, however, new technologies are being developed in order to speed up the process of sorting but to also yield better results. Exciting technologies using magnets or optical systems are being used to effectively sort materials so more of it can be recycled.

A.If sorting doesn't happen, recyclable materials can end up in landfills.

B.This is where different sorting techniques come into play.

C.In Europe, collection systems vary from country to country.

D.So citizens need to be aware of their local collection system.

E.Then they can be collected and taken to the right place for recycling.

F.The rest, though they could be recycled and reused, were landfilled or burned.

G.In recent years, Europe has seen a 25% growth in recycling secondary raw materials.

3下文For instance, in Brussels, Belgium, consumers put plastic packaging, cans and beverage cartons in blue bags designed for recyclable packaging C. In Europe, collection systems vary from country to country.

Somewhat differently, in Vienna (Austria), citizens can expect their paper, metal, glass and plastic to be separately collected in different weeks of the year. D. So citizens need to be aware of their local collection system.

Once recyclable materials are collected from your doorstep, they are further sorted in specialized facilities which ensure the quality of the recycling process.(一旦可回收的材料從你的家門口被收集起來,它們就會在專門的設(shè)施中被進(jìn)一步分類,以確;厥者^程的質(zhì)量)B. This is where different sorting techniques come into play.(這就是不同分類技術(shù)發(fā)揮作用的地方)承接自然,上文的specialized facilities就是選項(xiàng)中提到的different sorting techniques,故選B項(xiàng)。

Why would human beings waste a third of their lives sleeping when they could be doing more important things like looking after their families or working? Some scientists believe sleeping helps recharge the body, while others think it is important for strengthening newly-formed memories. Now, there is new evidence which suggests that the purpose of sleep may be to forget some of the millions of new things we learn each day.

The neurons (神經(jīng)元) in the human brain consist of fibers called dendrites (樹突). These grow as we learn new things and connect the brain's cells to each other at contact points called synapses (突觸). The larger the dendrites become and the more cells they connect, the more information we store.

In 2003, Giulio Tononi and Chiara Cirelli, both biologists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, suggested a new idea: The things our brains learn each day result in so many synapses that things start to get a little messy. Sleeping allows us to sort through the "noise" and dispense all the unnecessary information, leaving behind only the most important memories-

Recently, the university's research has provided direct evidence to support the theory. The experiment involved analyzing 6,920 synapses in the brain shavings from two groups of mice over a four — year period; one group had been allowed to sleep, while the other had been kept awake and entertained with toys. The researchers discovered that the brain shavings of the sleeping mice had nearly 20 percent fewer synapses than those that had been kept awake and entertained.

It was also evident during the study that the brain does not shave every synapse. 20% of neurons remained unchanged; these were most likely well-established memories. Therefore, although we may be sleeping to forget some of what we've learned, the brain "forgets" in a smart way.

Most researchers believe clearing our brains is not the only purpose of sleep. Resting our minds and bodies has also been found to help with other biological functions like strengthening our immunity. Though scientists may never agree on a single reason, they are all sure of one thing — a good night's rest is essential for our health. So try and spend at least a third of your day sleeping!

1What will happen when we learn new things?

A.We tend to forget some key information.

B.We develop the ability to recharge the body.

C.The dendrites expand and connect brain's cells.

D.The neurons gather at what are called contact points.

2Which of the following can replace the underlined word “dispense” in Paragraph 3?

A.Pick up.B.Get rid of.

C.Bring down.D.Pull out of.

3What is the author's purpose of writing the text?

A.To prove a new theory.

B.To report a new discovery.

C.To show sleep good for memory.

D.To discuss how long one should sleep.

The meeting had come to an end. Bob started to stand up, spilling his coffee over his notes. 'How embarrassing. I am getting so clumsy in my old age.' Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling stories of our most embarrassing moments. Someone said, 'Come on, Frank. Tell us your most embarrassing moment.'

'My embarrassing moment? ' I said and began to fall into the memory of the past, 'Honestly, it is the most regretful one for me in my life.'

I grew up in San Pedro. My Dad was a fisherman, and he loved the sea. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family.

I wish you could have met my Dad. He was a big man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his catch. When you got close to him, he smelled like the ocean. He would wear his old canvas, foul-weather coat and his bibbed overalls. His rain hat would be pulled down over his brow. No matter how much my Mother washed them, they would still smell of the sea and of fish.

When the weather was bad he would drive me to school. He had this old truck that he used in his fishing business. That truck was older than he was. As he would drive toward the school, I would shrink down into the seat hoping to disappear. Half the time, he would slam to a stop and the old truck would belch a cloud of smoke. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over, give me a big kiss on the cheek. It was so embarrassing for me. I was twelve years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me goodbye.

Then one day when we got to the school with his usual big smile, he started to lean toward me. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Tears began to well up in Frank’s eyes, as he spoke. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
