Florida, in the southeastern United States, is called the Sunshine State. It grows more oranges than any
place except Brazil. But Arctic air has damaged some Florida oranges and strawberries in recent days, and
killed fish at tropical fish farms.
The unusually long period of cold weather has shown how even warm climates can sometimes freeze
over. But protecting plants and trees in the garden may not be too difficult if you follow a few suggestions.
Sudden cold can be the biggest threat, expecially after a warm period.Plants have not had a chance to
harden their defenses. Those that are actively growing or flowering are at high risk.
Try to choose plants that live best with cold weather, and make planting areas face west and south.
Being near other growth may also provide warmth.
Most frost damage takes place at night.Ice crystals form on the leaf surface. They pull moisture(水分)
from the leaves and keep plant tissues from getting water.
Cold weather is most likely to damage or kill plants that do not have enough moisture. So keep the
garden watered.Moist soil absorbs more heat than loose, dry soil covered with mulch or vegetation.
Experts of University of Arizona say covering plants and small trees with cloth or paper can help
prevent frost damage.A onehundred watt light bulb designed for outdoor use can also provide warmth.
Some people place Christmas lights on young trees for warmth. The bulbs should hang below the leaves
to let the heat rise into the tree.
Cold is especially dangerous to citrus trees.Agricultural specialists at the University of California
suggest putting paper or cloth around the trunk and central branches of young Citrus trees.
In Florida, as temperatures fell to record lows, citrus growers sprayed water on their trees to help prevent
freeze damage.
Jim Bottcher is a master gardener with the University of Florida extension. He explains that as the water
freezes, it produces heat, and the ice forms a protective blanket around the tree.If you spray a tree, keep
the water away from nearby power lines.Heavy ice can form and break them.
You can also wrap a tree in palm tree frond leaves, corn stalks or fiberglass.Adding plastic film works
well in rain and snow. But experts say plastic alone does not help much.
1  caused by cold in Florida __2__damage to some oranges and strawberries.
Killing fish.

3  to protect plants and trees Choose plants__4__for cold weather.
Try to make the garden remain

Hang bulbs __7__warmth below the leaves.
__8__the trunk and the branches of young citrus trees with paper or cloth.
__9__the ice as a protective blanket.

How Many Lies Do the Children Tell You?
Mothers who feel their children don' t appreciate them can add another grievance to the list: half
the time, their children are lying to them.A study designed to expose the truth about lying shows that
undergraduates lie to their mothers in 46% of their conversations.Still, mums should feel better than
total strangers, who are told lies an astonishing 77 % of the time.
Bella Depaulo and a team of psychologists from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, asked
77 undergraduates to keep a record of all their conversations for a week, and write down whethe
r they lied at any time.DePaulo named lying broadly, as "when you intentionally try to mislead
someone", so she would catch the smallest of lies.
The students told an average of two lies a day. They said they had been studying when they had
been out drinking. One told his parents that a textbook cost $50 rather than $20 so that they would
send him extra money.Female students constantly told their plain-looking roommates that they were
pretty."They are everyday lies," says DePaulo.
DePaulo and her colleagues conclude that people tend to tell fewer lies to those they feel closest to.
College students lied to their best friends 28% of the time but lied to acquaintances 48% of the time.
In close relationships, people were more likely to tell "kind-hearted" lies, designed to protect feelings,
rather than self-serving lies.
Romantic partners are somewhere between close friends and acquaintances.Students lied to
romantic partners about a third of the time. DePaulo thinks that unmarried lovers can expect less honesty
than best friends because of the insecurity that comes with romance.
Mothers can take heart from one other finding. They may have been lied to, but at least their children
talked to them. The students were recorded telling few lies to their fathers because they had little
interaction with them.

Americans often say that there are only two things a person can be sure of in life: death and taxes.
Many people feel that the United States has the worst taxes in the world.
Taxes are the money that people pay to support their government. There are generally three levels of
government in the United States: federal, state, and city; therefore, there are three types of taxes.
Salaried people who earn more than four to five thousand per year must pay a certain part of their
salaries to the federal government. The percentage varies for different people. It depends on the salaries.
The federal government has a two level income tax: that is, 15 or 28 percent. $17,850 is the cutoff. The
tax rate is 15 percent below $17,850 and 28 percent above.
The second tax is for the state government: New York, California, or any of the other fortyeight states. Some states have an income tax similar to that of the federal government. Of course, the percentage for the state tax is lower. Other states have a sales tax, which is a percentage charged to any item which people
buy in the state. Some states use income tax and sales tax to raise their revenues (收入).
The third tax is for the city. This tax comes in two forms: property tax (people who own a house have
to pay taxes on it ) and excise (執(zhí)照) tax, which is collected on vehicles in a city. The cities use this money for education, police, public works, etc.
Since Americans pay such high taxes, they often feel that they are working one day each week just to
pay their taxes. People always complain about taxes. They often say that the government misuses their tax dollars. They all believe that taxes are too high in this country.
1. How much money does an American earning $40,000 per year pay to the federal government as
income tax according to the passage?
A. $11,200.
B. $6,000.
C. $17,850.
D. $5,000.
2. What happens to buyers when a sales tax is collected?
A. They have to pay more than what the item costs.
B. They can pay less than what the item costs.
C. They have to pay exactly what the item costs.
D. They will all give up buying the item.
3. What tax does an American have to pay to the city if he owns a car?
A. Property tax.
B. Excise tax.
C. Income tax.
D. Sales tax.
4. After reading the passage, we might feel that Americans seem to be _____.
A. satisfied with their taxes
B. proud of their taxes
C. unhappy about their taxes
D. happy about their taxes

When milk arrived on the doorstep
When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our
doorstep. His name was Mr.Basille.He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5yearold boy, I
couldn't take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt.He noticed this one day during a delivery and
gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on.If we needed to change
our order, my mother would pen a note- "Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery" -and place it in
the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically(魔術(shù)般)appear.
All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and
their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that
we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn't freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time
taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.
There is sadly  no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk,
thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete(競爭). Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may
just not have been practical to have a delivery  service.
Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. I took it
home and planted it on the back porch(門廊). Every so often my son's friends will ask what it is. So I
start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.
1. Mr. Basille gave the boy a quarter out of his coin changer ________.
A. to show his magical power
B. to pay for the delivery
C. to satisfy his curiosity
D. to please his mother
2. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy's house?
A. He wanted to have tea there.
B. He was a respectable person.
C. He was treated as a family member.
D. He was fully trusted by the family.
3. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?
A. Nobody wants to be a milkman now.
B. It has been driven out of the market.
C. Its service is getting poor.
D. It is forbidden by law.
4. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?
A. He missed the good old days.
B. He wanted to tell interesting stories.
C. He needed it for his milk bottles.
D. He planted flowers in it.

If you look for a book as a present for a child, you will be spoiled for choice even in a year there
is no new Harry Potter.  J. K Rowling's wizard is not alone. The past decade has been a harvest for
good children's books ,which has set off a large quantity of films and an increased sales of classics
such as The Lord of the Rings.
Yet despite that, reading is increasingly unpopular among children. According to statistics in 1997,
23% said they didn't like reading at all. In 2003, 35% didn't. And around 6% of the children leave
primary school each year unable to read properly.
Maybe the decline is caused by the increasing availability of computes games. Maybe the books
boom has affected only the top of the educational pile. Either way, Chancellor Cordon Brown plans
to change things for the bottom of the class. In his pre-budget report, he announced the national project
of Reading Recovery to help the children struggling most.
Reading Recovery is aimed at six year olds, who receive four months of individual daily half-hour
classes with a specially trained teacher. An evaluation this year reported that children on the school
made 20 months' progress in just one year, whereas similarly weak readers without special help made
just five months' progress ,and so ended the year even further below the level expected for their age.
International research tends to find that when British children leave primary school, they read well ,
but read text often for fun than those elsewhere. Reading for fun matters because children who are keen
on reading can report lifelong pleasure and loving books is an excellent indicator of future educational
success. According to the OECD, being a regular and enthusiastic reader is of great advantage.
1. Which of the following is true of Paragraph 1?
A. Many children's books have been adapted from films.
B. Many high-quality children's books have been published.
C. The sales of classics have led to the popularity of films.
D. The sales of presents for children have increased.
2. Statistics suggested that .
A. the number of top students increased with the use of computers
B. a decreasing number of  children showed interest in reading
C. a minority of primary school children read properly
D. a huge percentage of children read regularly
3. What do we know about Reading Recovery?
A. An evaluation of it will be made sometime this year.
B. Weak readers on the project were the most hardworking.
C. It aims to train special teachers to help children with reading.
D. Children on the project showed noticeable progress in reading.
4. Reading for fun is important because book-loving children _________.
A. take greater advantage of the project
B. show the potential to enjoy a long life
C. are likely to succeed in their education.
D. would make excellent future researchers
5. The aim of this text would probably be _________.
A. to overcome primary school pupils reading difficulty.
B. to encourage the publication of more children's books
C. to remind children of the importance of reading for fun
D. to introduce a way to improve early children reading
