Fix it on your own
Did you know that a bowl of rice could save your iPod if you drop it in a swimming pool by accident? Or that the camera on your phone could tell you what's wrong with your TV remote control? The experts at Geek Squad (geelsquad.co.uk) have made a gadget(小機(jī)件) rescue guide. So, let’s take a look at some of their useful advice.
● How to get more juice out of your phone battery(電池)
If your battery goes dead but you need to get a number or send one last text, try warming it up. That may give you a tiny bit of power. Take the battery from the phone and rub it between your hands. Or warm it under your arm for a few minutes. Then try to start the phone – but use it quickly.
● What to do if your gadget gets wet
First, try drying it out with a vacuum cleaner. If a vacuum cleaner isn’t at hand, fill a pot or bowl with uncooked rice and put your we gadget inside. The dry, uncooked rice will absorb all the water and, after a few hours, you should be able to use the gadget. Don’t forget to remove the battery and SIM card before you dry it.
● What to do if your TV remote control stops working
If replacing the batteries doesn’t work, get the camera function up on your phone and point the remote at the lens(鏡頭). When you press a button on the remote, if it's working then the glass bobble(小球) at the front of the remote will light up when you look at it on the screen of your phone. This is because the screen on a phone or digital camera picks up infrared rays (紅外線), even though your eyes don't. If the glass bobble doesn’t light up, the remote is broken. If it does, the receiving device is broken.
43.If your cell phone falls into a sink, you can .
A.warm it up under your arm. B.put it into the uncooked rice.
C.press it with both of your hands. D.remove the battery after you dry it.
44.Why can a phone be used to prove the TV remote control works well?
A.Because it can receive infrared ray.
B.Because it can reflect infrared ray.
C.Because it can improve the TV remote control.
D.Because it can picture the TV remote control.
45.In which section of a newspaper can we possibly read this text?
A.Entertainment B.Finance C.Culture D.Life
46.The purpose of the passage is to give people .
A.professional guides B.necessary warnings
C.practical tips D.personal opinions

Kenya is the first country to protect elephants by text messages. Mobile phone SIM cards are inserted(插入) in the collars of elephants. The cards will send a text message when the elephants wander too close to farms, allowing wildlife protectors to drive them off rather than shoot them.
Hungry elephants cause big problems for farmers and villagers in some parts of Kenya when they are searching for food. Two years ago the Kenyan wildlife service had to unwillingly shoot five elephants who continued to destroy crops.
In order to prevent such bad activities, the Elephants charity put a mobile phone SIM card on a huge bull elephant called Kimani. The conservationists(自然保護(hù)者) then set up a virtual(虛擬的) fence. Each time Kimani came near the fence, a text message was sent to farmers. So far he’s been stopped from going into the danger area fifteen times.
The project seems to be working successfully as Kimani hasn’t come near a farm for four months. A similar system has now been put into operation in another part of the country.
One of the biggest benefits of the project is that elephants seem to learn from one another, which can help a whole group change their habits.
The elephants can also be tracked using Google Earth software. This is also helping the protectors know where to use their resources to protect the animals well.

A mobile phone service which makes your handset scream when it’s been stolen has been started, with its makers claiming it could put an end to mobile theft altogether.
The Remote XT system uses software to link customers’ mobile phones directly to a secure remote server, which stores all their data from phone numbers to text messages and e-mails. If the owner’s phone is lost or stolen, they can dial a 24-hour call centre and have it registered. The handset is then disabled, and cannot even be used if a new SIM card is put in. At the same time, the system sets off an alarm sounding like a high-pitched(尖聲的)scream, which can only be stopped by removing the battery.
Existing data is also wiped off the phone but, because the information has been stored centrally, as soon as the victim gets a news phone, the system designers said.
“By making mobiles unusable to anyone but the rightful owner the phones become worthless and we will see the market for stolen handsets stopped once and for all,” said Mark Whiteman, managing director of Remote XT. For the moment the system is aimed at business customers and comes with a fee of 9. 99 pounds per month, possibly available to the majority of average users within two years as mobile technology advances.
