A few weeks after my first wife, Georgia, was called to heaven, I was cooking dinner for my son and myself. For a 11 , I had decided on frozen peas. As I was cutting open the bag, it 12 from my hand and crashed to the floor. The peas, like marbles(彈珠), 13 everywhere. I tried to use a broom(掃帚), 14 with each sweep, they just rolled across the kitchen.
For the next week, every time I was in the 15 , I found a pea——in a corner, or behind a table leg. They kept 16 . Eight months later I pulled out the refrigerator to clean behind it, and 17__ 12 frozen peas hidden underneath.
At the time I found those few remaining 18 , I was in a new relationship with a wonderful __19 I’d met in a support group. After we married, I was reminded 20 those peas under the refrigerator, and realized that my 21 had been like that bag of frozen peas. It had scattered(分散). My wife had died; I was in a new city with a busy job, and with a son having trouble 22 his new surroundings and the 23 of his mother. I was a bag of spilled frozen peas; my life had come apart and scattered.
When life gets you 24 , when everything you know comes apart, and when you think you’ll never 25 , remember that it’s just a bag of scattered frozen peas. The peas can be 26 , and life will move on. You’ll find all the peas 27 , including the ones that are hardest to find. And when you’ve got them 28 you’ll start to feel whole again.
The life you know can break apart at any time. But you’ll have to 29 , and how fast you collect your peas depends on you. Will you keep scattering them around with a broom, 30 will you pick them up one by one and put your life back together?

In 1982, Steven Callahan was crossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and sank.He got into a life boat, but his supplies were 21 .His chances of surviving were small. 22 when three fishermen found him 76 days later, he was alive —much 23 than he was when he started, but alive.

The truth is,our circumstances are only bad 39 to something better. But others have been though the much worse, that is,in comparison with what others have been through, you’re fortunate.Tell this to yourself over sad over again, and it will help you 40 though the rough situations with a little more courage.

When I walk through the streets of San Francisco’s business districts, white people stare at me as if I were a circus clown.
Their staring eyes don’t see that I get ____1____ A’s in school, or that I am a captain of the football team, or that I belong to ___2____youth organizations. All they see is that I am 6-foot-4, young ,black, and male-----a potential ____3____to them.
White men look at me as if I am up to no good, or as if they are ____4____to me. White women just look at me with____5____, say, sometimes they cross the street when they see my friends and me coming, or walk in the street and only get back on the sidewalk after we ____6____.
Many people come to San Francisco to get away from the stereotypes(成見) of the cities they were born and ____7_____ in. The majority of the blacks and Latinos who live in this city don’t have that luxury.
How can you feel at home when people are_____8_____telling you to get back to Africa or Mexico ----or just back to “where you belong”?
My way of dealing with this kind of thing has _____9_____over the years. In the past, when my friends and I would walk the streets and a hundred pairs of white eyes would look at me as if we were the lowest form of dirt, it would make us angry enough to hurt or ____10____them.
Now I’m more likely to use ____11____ to defend myself against those eyes. To women who clutch their purse in terror, I’ll say, “Man, I ain’t gonna do anything to you, I got money in my pocket!” My cousin has even started wearing a T-shirt ____12_____ in big letters, “NO, WHITE LADY, I DON'T’ WANT YOUR PURSE.”
The most painful thing is when we get those___13____ stares from black people, especially elderly ones. I want o say to them, “We’re black too. Why would we do something to you?”
Usually I react more ____14____to all of this than a lot of my friends do. Some of them, so brainwashed, just think it’s part of life and that there is nothing you can do.
But for me, that’s not good enough. I just can’t stand it when every day a hundred pair of eyes tell you you’re not_____15_____.

Perhaps the only test score that I remember is the 41. I was in high school. The test was the final for the class. It was a rather 36 test. I didn’t know how 37 I had done but I knew there were things on 38 that I didn’t know.
I remember 39 waiting for the result. When Mr. Bales 40 my paper on my desk, I was 41 . There in big 42 numbers, circled to draw attention, was my grade — 41! I 43 my paper so that others couldn’t see it. A 41 was not 44 that you wanted your classmates to see. Finally, Mr. Bales stood behind the desk and 45 the class. “The grades were not very good; 46 of you passed,” he announced. “ The highest grade in the class was a 41, so all of you failed.”
A 41. That was me. Suddenly my dismal (陰沉的) face didn’t look quite so bad. I had the highest grade. I felt a lot 47 . As soon as I got home, my mother asked me, “How did you do on your test?” “I made a 41,” I said. My mother’s 48 changed suddenly. “You failed.” “But I had the highest grade in the class!” I replied. “ I don’t 49 what everyone else had. You failed. It doesn’t matter if everyone else failed too; what matters is what you do,” my mother 50 answered.
For years, I thought that was a harsh (嚴(yán)厲的) judgment. My mother was always that 51 . It didn’t matter what the other kids did; it only mattered what I did and 52 I did it excellently.
We often don’t understand the wisdom of good parents until we ourselves stand 53 the parenting shoes. My mother’s philosophy(人生態(tài)度)has 54 me throughout life. The path of the crowd is wide but the path to pass the tests of life is 55 and there are very few people on it.
