1."Please read this,"my three-year-old Claire said one day,pointing to a page with an old children's song:"Do you know how to plant cabbages".In blue ink,someone had crossed out cabbages and written"Watermelons!"
"Daddy!Did you do that?"Claire asked,looking up with an expression of shock.We had only recently asked her not to write in books,and suddenly here was proof that her parents weren't practicing what they asked.I told her it was written by my grandfather and sat down to tell the story.
I grew up on Granddad's farm in Nebraska,America.One afternoon,I decided to plant some watermelons.
"Hmm,there's a crop I haven't tried!"Granddad smiled."Let's do it now!"
With Granddad's help I planted the seeds.
The next morning,I found a big watermelon there.I knew it was Granddad that put a watermelon there and I thought he had played a joke on me.
Later that month,Granddad gave me a book."For school,"he said seriously.I opened it to where he'd written"Watermelons!"and laughed at another of his jokes.
Claire listened quietly to the story and asked to plant seeds too,so I took her to buy some seeds.On the walk home,I realized for the first time that Granddad could have met my childish enthusiasm with some disappointing facts such as that watermelons don't grow well in Nebraska or that it was too late to plant them anyway.But instead of doing that,he had stolen back into town that afternoon and bought the biggest melon on the market.That night,after I was asleep,he had awkwardly unloaded it and,with a painful bend,placed it exactly above my seeds.He made sure I experienced the"wow."
I had always thought the midnight miracle(奇跡)was just one of Granddad's jokes.Now I realized he had planted hope that day.As Claire planted the seeds happily,I watched my grandfather's joy take fresh root in her life.And that was the biggest miracle of all.
28.Claire was shocked at the mark on the page becauseC.

B.someone preferred watermelons to cabbages

29.Why did Granddad put a watermelon where the author planted seeds?B
A.Because he didn't want to waste the watermelon.
B.Because he didn't want to disappoint the author.
C.Because he wanted to make fun of the author.
D.Because he wanted the author to be a farmer.
30.Which of the following best describes Granddad?D

3.Researchers and many scientists are concerned that the earth's climate and atmosphere are becoming warmer.What scientists do agree on is that the temperature will continue to increase if measures are not taken to reduce pollution and emissions(排放物) from cars and factories.
It is widely agreed that oil and coal create greenhouse gases.These emissions include carbon dioxide,which is the cause of most of the global warming problems.The loss of trees in many areas is making the problem worse,because trees and plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.The fewer trees that are left standing,the less carbon dioxide can be absorbed.
Scientists predict that the sea level will rise,ice caps will melt,and some animals and plants will fail to survive because their homes will disappear.There may be more deserts and less available farmland because of the dry ground,and there may be more storms and floods.
Some countries,including the UK and the US,are taking steps to prevent the situation from becoming worse.There are programmes to educate citizens and students about the situation and recycling waste is becoming more common.Using more alternative(替代的) energy sources is also a good way to prevent global warming.
One thing that everyone can do is limit their use of energy every day,and you can do this no matter how old,or young,you are.Try to limit the unnecessary use of electricity and work to save energy every day.

66.What is the best title for the text?C
A.What Global Warming Brings           B.How to Reduce Emissions
C.Take Action to Stop Global Warming   D.No Emissions,No Warming
67.A lead to global warming problems.
A.More greenhouse gages and less trees
B.More trees and less carbon dioxide
C.More plants and less oxygen
D.More greenhouse gases and fewer animals
68.Which of the following is NOT one of the scientists'predictions?B
A.Rising sea level.
B.The disappearance of all the animals and plants.
C.More storms and floods.
D.More deserts and less available farmland.
69.Some countries are doing all of the following EXCEPTB to stop global warming.
A.recycling waste                        B.closing all factories
C.using alternative energy sources       D.offering programmes to educate citizens
70.What is the at thor's attitude toward global warming?A
A.Concerned.  B.Satisfied.  C.Disappointed.  D.Puzzled.

4.Last year,over 206,000students from the United States studied abroad.Does that number surprise you?These students already know the benefits of studying abroad.You may be wondering why you should study abroad.Here are some answers for you.
◆Timing
The absolutely best time in your life to study abroad is when you are in college.If you miss this opportunity,it's almost impossible for you to do it later in life.
◆To gain cross-cultural experience
Life overseas makes you see your everyday world in a whole new light.You don't even realize it,but our culture shapes the way we view the world and affects us every minute of the day.Differences in culture are more than just differences in language,food,clothing and art.
◆To improve your communication skills and your self-confidence
People who study abroad tend to be willing to take risks, willing to put themselves in unusual situations, and able to solve problems.
◆To become more fluent in a language or to learn a new language
The world market is becoming smaller,and many companies require a second language.Foreign languages are not only valuable in the job market but also valuable in the real world.
◆For the adventure
Travel to other cities within your host country and around neighboring countries.As you get to know your new classmates,roommates,and host family,you will gain a unique view on the host culture.Discover the differences and,more importantly,the many similarities between your worlds.The friendships you make will last long after the program.
◆To learn more about yourself
Find out who you really are.What are your limits?How do you overcome the difficulties you've never  encountered  before?How independent are you?These questions are hard to answer until you are removed from your usual surroundings.After solving difficult problems on your own overseas,you'll find that almost nothing will confuse you at home.Students who study abroad commonly report that their study abroad experience actually changed their lives.

31.The passage mainly talks aboutA.
A.the benefits of studying abroad
B.the time for studying abroad
C.the difficulty you come across when you're abroad
D.some tips on how to get used to a new environment
32.What is the best time in your life to study abroad according to the passage?D
A.When you're at work.       B.When you are free.
C.At any time you like.       D.When you are in college.
