Young people can phone “Alive and Well” and leave a message for their parents. The telephones are answered by answering machines. So no one can speak to the child of making him return home.
Parents of runaway children who are under eighteen can ask the police to bring their children home, so children do not want to tell their parents where they are.Through “Alive and Well” they can telephone their parents without worrying about this or giving out their addresses.

The existence of Santa Claus can be proved in five ways.
The first and most obvious way is ________.It is certain and evident(顯然的)to our senses, that in the world some things are Christmas trees. Now no pine tree becomes a Christmas tree unless it is trimmed(修剪).Now to be trimmed means to receive ornaments(裝飾物)from another. But this cannot go on to infinity in the trimming of Christmas trees. One must come to some first untrimmed trimmer; and this everyone understands to be Santa Claus.
The second way is ________.We see that in the world that Christmas gifts are given and received.Whoever, then, gives Christmas gifts either receives them from another or makes them in his workshop. If, however, no one makes Christmas gifts in his workshop, they are not given nor received. Therefore it is necessary to posit(安置) some first giver of Christmas gifts, who everyone calls Santa Claus.
The third way is ________.At all stores we see things of plastic that represent Santa Claus. These things are of such a quality that they are representations according to Santa himself or according to other images of him. But, it is not possible to proceed to infinity in images. Therefore, it is necessary to posit something which is like Santa Claus and hence Santa Claus exists.
The fourth way is ________.Indeed, in this world, among men there are some of more and some of less Christmas spirit. But“more”and“l(fā)ess”is said of diverse things according as they resemble in their diverse ways something which is the“maximum”.Therefore there must be something which has the most Christmas spirit, and this we call Santa Claus.
The fifth way is ________.When Christmas day approaches, we see from their being good always or frequently that children, who lack understanding, are moved because of an end.But children would not be good because of the Nativity of Christ unless there were someone who strengthened them so that they were good. And this someone is known by all to be Santa Claus.
A.taken from the grades which are found in Christmas spirit
B.taken from the food people eat at Christmas Day
C.taken from the nature of Christmas gifts
D.taken from the behavior of children
E.taken from Christmas trees
F.taken from plastic images resembling Santa Claus

When the first spring flowers blossom, Easter comes. It is the oldest Christian feast, in memory of the resurrection (復(fù)活) of Jesus Christ.
Along with the traditional Easter walk or outing, the giving of Easter eggs and, more recently, of Easter presents is a main feature of the feast. Parents give their children “Easter eggs” – colored and boiled eggs, chocolate eggs, marzipan eggs – Easter bunnies, sweets, and other gifts. In some German regions, children virtually “collect” Easter eggs from their relatives, especially their godparents.
Usually, the Easter eggs are carefully hidden in the garden or in the house and the children must search for them on the morning of the Sunday. They are told that the Easter bunny has brought them. This anonymous(匿名的), mysterious bunny is like Santa Claus at Christmas. But it is less of an “educational” figure than Santa Claus is, since the eggs are not given to children as rewards for being good.
Some Easter egg games have been preserved at certain places in Germany or have even been newly developed. Children try to outdo others in rolling colored eggs down grassy slopes, for instance, or they knock the eggs’ pointed ends together and the child whose egg does not shatter(砸碎) gets the broken one, too. In some places, this custom was even used as the name of local festival.
1.What are the main features of Easter?
A. Easter walk, Easter eggs, Easter bunnies and sweets.
B. Easter outing and the giving of Easter presents.
C. Easter walk, Easter eggs, Easter bunnies and Easter egg games.
D. Easter outing, the collecting of Easter eggs, and Easter games
2.The underlined word “outdo” means ________.
A. do better than B. do worse than C. do slower than D. do the same as
3.What can be inferred from the passage?
E. Easter bunny will give gifts to children for better or worse.
F. Easter bunny is very similar to Santa Claus, as they both bring gifts to children.
G. Easter always falls on a Sunday.
H. Some of the local festivals are named by Easter egg games.

Merry Christmas
The winter holiday season is the most festive time of the year in the United States. Students from elementary school through college have about two weeks’ vacation, beginning shortly before Christmas and ending soon after New Year’s Day. 71 There are many parties to celebrate the birth of Christ and the arrival of the New Year.
72 Late in November, street lights and store windows are decorated with the traditional Christmas colors of red and green. Santa Claus, shepherd and angel scenes appear in shop windows. Winter scenes with snowmen, sleighs, skaters, and skiers decorate cards and windows.
The manufacture and sale of Christmas items is big business. 73 Smart shoppers buy their gifts far in advance, before the Christmas rush makes shopping a chore.
Although Americans enjoy the commercial friendliness of Christmas, the most beautiful and meaningful parts of the holiday occur at home. 74 Then they sit down to enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner—turkey or ham, sweet potatoes, vegetables, and cranberry sauce. Dessert is usually fruit cake, plum pudding, or apple pie. Most of the Christmas customs which Americans enjoy today are variations of traditions brought here by European immigrants, decorating the Home with evergreens for example. 75 Branches of evergreens were thought to bring good luck and guarantee the return of spring. Now, at Christmastime, decorated trees stand in about two-thirds of American homes. The modern American tree is usually covered with colored balls and strings of colored lights.
A. Many families gather around the tree and open their gifts.
B. In America, the spirit of Christmas arrives about a month before the holiday itself.
C. Many families go away for the holidays, but those who stay home have fun, too.
D. In America, it’s customary to exchange gifts with family members and close friends.
E. Stores depend on Christmas shoppers for about one-fourth of their annual sales.
F. Today the custom continues, but now it is for fun.
G. This winter custom began in ancient times.
