Any observant person has noticed that a wild animal will allow a man or other potential enemy to approach only up to a given distance before it flees. “Flight distance” is the term used for this interspecies spacing. As a general rule, there is a positive relationship between the size of an animal and its flight distance—the larger the animal, the greater the distance it must keep between itself and the enemy. An antelope will flee when the enemy is as much as five hundred yards away. The wall lizard’s(壁虎) flight distance, on the other hand, is about six feet. Flight is the basic means of survival for mobile creatures.
Critical distance apparently is present wherever and whenever there is a flight reaction. “Critical distance” includes the narrow zone separating flight distance from attack distance. A lion in a zoo will flee from an approaching man until it meets a barrier that it cannot overcome. If the man continues the approach, he soon penetrates(進(jìn)入) the lion’s critical distance, at which point the cornered lion turns back and begins slowly to stalk (逼近) the man.
Social animals need to stay in touch with each other. Loss of contact with the group can be fatal(致命的) for a variety of reasons including exposure to enemies. Social distance is not simply the distance at which an animal will lose contact with his group—that is, the distance at which it can no longer see, hear, or smell the group—it is rather a psychological distance, one at which the animal apparently begins to feel anxious when it goes beyond its limits.
Social distance is not always rigidly(刻板的) fixed but is determined in part by the situation. When the young of apes and humans are mobile but not yet under control of the mother’s voice, social distance may be the length of her reach. When added control is needed because of danger, social distance shortens. To show this in man, one has only to watch a family with a number of small children holding hands as they cross a busy street.

Dreaming is believing, claim researchers of a new study, who found that dreams have an effect on people’s behavior, judgment and they might contain important hidden truths as well.
“Psychologists’ explanations of the meaning of dreams vary widely. But our findings show that people believe their dreams provide meaningful insightinto themselves and their world,” said a lead author of the study Carey Morewedge, an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University.
In six different studies, researchers surveyed nearly 1,100 people about their dreams. One of the studies focused on general beliefs about dreams and involved 149 university students. All students were asked to rate different theories about dreams. The experts found that a surprising majority of the participants supported the theory about dreams revealing(揭示) the hidden truths about themselves and the rest of the world.
In a second experiment, they surveyed 182 people at a Boston train station, and asked them to imagine one out of four possible situation that could have occurred the night before a scheduled airline trip. Most of the participants said that dreaming of a plane crash would be more likely to affect their travel plans than would just thinking about a crash, or being warned by the government of a terrorism risk. They said a dreamed crash would influence their travel plans just as much as learning about a real crash on their planned route would.
Another experiment involved 270 men and women from across the United States. In a short online survey, they were asked to recall one of the dreams they had seen about any person they knew.
The findings showed that people were more likely to remember and describe pleasant dreams about a person they liked, rather than a person they disliked. Meanwhile, in most cases they tended to consider an unpleasant dream as more meaningful if it was about a person they disliked.
“In other words,” said Morewedge, “people attribute meaning to dreams when it corresponds (與……一致) with their pre-existing beliefs and desires.”
The researchers say that more investigation is needed to fully understand how people interpret their dreams. According to Morewedge, most people realize that dreams are not predicting their future, but they still try to find some meaning in there.
小題1:. The purpose of the studies is to         .
A.determine when people tend to remember their dreams
B.research whether dreams have anything to do with real life
C.find out how people explain their dreams and what impact that has
D.understand what causes people to dream and how to interpret dreams
小題2: According to the second experiment, what might influence people’s travel plans most?
A.Thinking about a past plane crash.
B.Dreaming about a plane crash.
C.Hearing a government’s warning of a terrorism risk.
D.Imagining a plane crashing on their planned route.
小題3:. What can be concluded from the study?
A.Dreams can be a useful tool for learning and problem solving.
B.Most people disagree that dreams help them better know themselves and the world.
C.A majority of people believes that dreams can predict their future and try to find their meaning.
D.When a dream conflicts with people’s existing beliefs and desires, they tend to attribute less meaning to it.
小題4:. Which kind of dream is seen as more meaningful than the rest?
A.A pleasant dream about a person the dreamer likes.
B.A pleasant dream about a person the dreamer dislikes
C.An unpleasant dream about a person the dreamer likes.
D.An unpleasant dream about a person the dreamer dislikes.

Ants have a reputation for strength, organization and teamwork. But researchers have now discovered that a key secret to the success of ants is their ability to identify the importance of age in the work place.
A study of Gentral American leaf-cutter ants has shown that the younger and stronger members are give the toughest job of cutting therough the leaves they harvest.Their sharp youn teeth do this job effectively, but as they get older their teeth become relatively worn and blunt.
But rather than being retired or abandoned by the group, the ageing ants are given a new role more suyted to their physical abilities. They become carriers and teansport the leaves back to the kingdom where they are harvested for food.
The findings by researchers from the University of Oregon and the Oregong State University support previous research showin the survival of a leaf-cutter kingdom depends on the efficiency(效率)of is workers.
“Cuting leaves is hard work,”said Dr.Robert Schofield, who led the research team.“Much of the cutting is done with a V-shaped blade(刀片)between teeth on their jaws. This blade starts out as sharp as the sharpest razor blade that humans have developed.”But over rime the teeth become blunter and the cutting job slows down. The team estimated that, because of this age-related wear,a colony(蟻群)spent twice the energy cutting leaves than it would if all the ants had sharp blades. Its findings support the idea that wear and break can be significant problems for insects as well as largre animals.
Like humans,leaf-cuttre ant recognize that older members of the group can still make a worhwhile contribution to society.“This study shows an advantage of social living that we are familiar with,”said Dr.Schofield.

Bexley Middle School eighth-graders won the grand prize at the 2009 National Engineers Week Future City Competition (TM) on Feb. 18 in Washington, D.C. They competed with 37 other schools across the country.
The students qualified for the national competition by winning a regional competition on Jan. 17 in Columbus. By winning the national event, the students earned an all-expenses paid trip to Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., according to a Bexley school district news report.
Future City aims to stir (激發(fā)) interest in science, technology, engineering and math among young people. Bexley team members were Tom Krajnak, Abby Sharp, Wyatt Peery, Elizabeth Maher, Aaron Hutchinson and Truman Haycock. They work in teams under the guidance of a teacher, Margaret Englehardt, and a volunteer engineer, Mark Sherman, design and build a city of tomorrow. Mayor John Brennan presented the students during a recent Bexley City Council meeting. Each team in the Future City competition plans its city using Sim City software and creates a model to show a physical representation of one section of the city. Team members must write both an essay about the yearly theme and an abstract about their city. They also must make a presentation to judges.
Focusing on eco-responsibility, the Bexley team built “Novo-Mondum,” an Icelandic city in the year 2171. Krajnak said the team’s project included a new water system for each resident unit and a 500-word essay on using bacteria to purify water. “We used our essay and abstract (摘要) to build a model,” he said. “It was hard to organize which building would go where, what each building does and how to make it look good.”
Englehardt said her students did a good job answering impromptu (即席) questions during the regional competition. “They can think on their feet,” she said. Principal Harley Williams said the school is very proud of the students’ performance.

Although there are no state controlled survival courses in Britain or the United States, there are various independent organizations offering similar activities.Students can participate(take part)in outdoor training courses through university clubs and societies.Anyone can register with such groups, which then organize courses, training and trips for all members.
One of the most popular outdoor training programmes in both the US and Britain is Outward Bound(戶(hù)外訓(xùn)練).It was founded in 1941 in Wales and attracts hundreds of thousands of adventurous types every year. The courses are intended to broaden minds through experiences that build confidence, self-esteem(自尊)and character. As well as specialist courses such as canoeing, leadership skills and sailing, participants can take part in week long adventure training camps which include a host of sports and survival training education skills.
Michael Williams,an American student, took part in an Outward Bound course last year.He said:“We learned lots of first aid skills, lots of natural history ,lots of environmental facts, and participated in a wildlife preservation programme.Beyond that,my favorite skills learned were sailing and rock climbing.”Courses can last up to 40 days and are open to anyone over the age of 14.Students must be in general good health, but do not need to be experienced in outdoor-sports.There is no selection process;everyone is welcome, although new participants are advised to pick a course matching their physical capacity. Most of the British courses take place in the Brecon Beacons in Wales.Another similar organization is the UK Survival School, which includes courses on learning to 1ive with the environment, sailing and  winter survival. On a basic survival weekend students will learn how to get water and food, how to make fire and cook with it,to find and build a shelter, control survival life support, how to cross rivers.Send off a distress signal, and to use compasses(指南針)by day and night.

Every pet owner loves his pet .There is no argument here.
But when we asked our readers whether they would clone their beloved animals , the responses were split(分裂) almost down the middle . Of the 228 readers who answered it ,108 would clone, 111 would not and nine weighed each side without offering an opinion .
Clearly, from readers’ response, this is an issue that reaches deeply into both the joy and eventual (最終的)sadness of owning a pet. It speaks, as well, to people’s widely differing expectations over the developing scientific procedure (步驟)
Most of the readers who favored the idea strongly believed it would produce at least a close copy of the original; many felt the process would actually return an exact copy. Those on the other side, however, held little hope that clone could truly recreate a pet; many simply did not wish to go against the natural law of life and death.
Both sides expressed equal love for their animals. More of them owned “the best dog/cat in the world”. They thought of their pets as their “best friend” or “a member of the family”. They told moving stories of pets’ heroism, intelligence and selfless devotion.
No wonder the loss is so disturbing---and the cloning so attractive. “People become very close to their animals, and the loss can be just as hard to bear as when a friend or family member dies,” says Gary Kowalski, author of goodbye, Friend: Healing Wisdom for Anyone Who Has Ever Lost a Pet. “For me, cloning feels like an attempt to turn death away…It’s understandable. Death is always painful. It’s difficult to deal with. It’s hard to accept.”
But would cloning reduce the blow? This question seems to be at the heart of this problem.
小題1:
As far as the cloning of pets is concerned, a recent survey shows that, of all pet owners,     .
A.a(chǎn) lot more of them are for itB.a(chǎn) lot more of them are against it
C.very few of them are willing to tell their opinions
D.a(chǎn)bout half of them are for it and the other half against it
小題2:
The expression “eventual sadness of owning a pet.” (in paragraph 3) refers to       .
A.the death of one’s pet
B.the final ownership of a pet
C.the troubles one has to deal with in keeping a pet
D.the dangers involved in the cloning of a pet
小題3:
In spite of their differences on the problem of cloning, it seems that     .
A.a(chǎn)ll pet owners love their pets very much
B.a(chǎn)ll pet owners try to go against the natural law of life and death
C.people who support cloning love their pets more
D.people who dislike cloning love their pets more
小題4:

B.thinks it hard to accept the idea of cloning pets
C.is in favor of the idea of cloning pets
D.is all against the cloning of pets

The pupils of the remote Beau-Roc primary school in Haiti are chanting (singing the same words again and again). One of them plays a guitar made from an empty oil tin.Their headmistress, Emile Jean-Noel, is one of the few women school headteachers in the country.
Today, over 70% of Haitian population live without proper food, water, schools, or housing. To reduce the hunger that prevents learning and to encourage parents to send their children to school, meals are provided by the World Food Programme.
"We are so cut off that we have many difficulties," comments Emile, adding that finding chalk, school books and other materials is practically impossible.Emile tries to encourage people around her to make use of available resources. Her efforts are bearing fruit. One of her successes was convincing local women to contribute to their children' s schooling and increase their income by selling embroidery(刺繡) and other handicrafts.
Recent political instability(不穩(wěn)定)has meant that the country has not invested (投資) in education for ten years.Only 44% of children go to school and less than half of them finish primary school. Less than a third of these children go on to secondary school. In rural areas it is not rare to find 17 and 18 year olds in primary school- Beau-Roc has only 4 teachers for 260 pupils.Emile works constantly to improve her pupils' environment.Under her direction, a local worker is now constructing a store house for the food delivered regularly by the WFP.
Not only is Emile' s salary small, but she receives it irregularly. For her, transport is a real headache. She lives five kilometers away and has to take the tap tap, a privately-owned bus, costing more than she can afford.
"The decision to be a rural teacher in Haiti should not be taken lightly" , Emile comments. "With all the sacrifices and risks it requires, only those who are really cut out for teaching should do it." However, Emile loves her job."I always feel at home with the children and, because the parents understand what I'm doing, I try to give my best."

ERATH WEEK---A DIARY OF THE PLANET
Enduring Storms
Several more rounds of severe storms, tornadoes and flash flooding struck many parts of the American Midwest and Northeast as bad weather continued across the US for a second month.

Monsoon Storms
A south-west monsoon has caused havoc in parts of Sri Lanka. Government meteorologists said that unexpected monsoonal winds blew directly across the country from the Southern Hemisphere at about 100km/h, producing several rounds of stormy weather. Nearly 250 houses in the capital Colombo were damaged.
Mt. Etna Erupts
Sicily’s Mount Etna volcano erupted shortly after midnight on July 1, shooting “bombs” of lava nearly 1.5 meters in diameter on the eastern side of the mountain. The 30-minute eruption could be seen for several miles, but did not threaten any nearby villages.
Hurricane
Hurricane Blas lost strength as it moved over cooler waters in the Pacific Ocean to the west of Mexico. Blas formed off southwest Mexico during the previous week, but squalls on the outer fringes of the storm lashed western Michoacan State, killing four people when their wood and cardboard home collapsed.
Monkey Repellent
After years of unsuccessful attempts to keep crop-eating monkeys out of Japanese fields, a Tokyo research team believes that it may have finally found a way to prevent the damage caused by the monkeys. Animal raids on crops were successfully prevented by shooting chilli powder into the air, irritating the eyes and noses of monkeys that passed in front of carefully-placed warning sensors. “We’ve tried al kinds of preventive measures, but the monkeys are smart enough to outwit the tricks, “said Toshiaki Wada, Director of the Tokyo Forestry Experiment Station in western Tokyo.

For several years, scientists have been testing a substance called interferon(干擾素), a possible wonder drug that is proving to be effective in treating a variety of diseases, including virus infections, bacterial infections, and cancers. To date, the new drug has no side effect of great influence to discourage its use.  But in spite of its success, last year only one gram was produced in the entire world.
The reason for the shortage lies in the structure of interferon. A special protein, the interferon produced from one animal species cannot be used in treating another animal species. In other words, to treat human beings, only interferon produced by human beings may be used. The drug is produced by infecting white blood cells with a virus. Fortunately, it is so effective that the amount given to each patient each time is very small.
Unlike antibiotics (抗生素), interferon does not attack germs directly. Instead, it protects healthy cells from being infected, and prevents the reproduction of viruses within cells.
As you might conclude, one of the most special uses of interferon has been in the treatment of cancer. Dr. Hans Strander, a research physician at Sweden’s famous Karolinska Institute, has treated more than one hundred cancer patients with the new drug. Among a group of selected patients who had received operations for advanced cancer, half were given  traditional treatments and the other half were given interferon. Among those treated with interferon 70 percent of them remained alive over three years, as compared with only 10 to 30 percent among those who had received the traditional treatments.
In the United States, a large-scale project supported by the American Cancer Society is now under way. If the experiment were successful, interferon could become one of the greatest medical discoveries of our time.
小題1:What is the difference between antibiotics and interferon?
A.Interferon has serious side effects, while antibiotics do not.
B.Antibiotics kill germs by attacking them directly, while interferon does not.
C.Antibiotics are very effective, while the effect of interferon is limited.
D.They are different in structure, although they are both proteins.
小題2:According to the passage, if 170 cancer patients received interferon treatment, how many of them would remain alive over three years?
A.About 30.
B.About 50.
C.About 120.
D.About 70.
小題3:The passage tells us that ________.
A.it is difficult to produce interferon in large quantities because of its special structure.
B.interferon is produced widely in lots of countries.
C.few of the patients who had received traditional treatments remained alive.
D.most of the patients who received interferon also needed traditional treatments.
