How to Become a Better Student
Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so,however.Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to.Here is how.
Plan your time carefully.
When planning your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do.After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time.First arrange your time for eating,sleeping,dressing,etc..Then decide a good, regular time for studying.Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.A weekly schedule may not solve all the problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study.
Look around the house for a good study area.Keep this place, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios or TV!When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class.
Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.Really listening in class means less work later.Taking class notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly.
When you get home from schools,go over your notes.Review the important points that your teacher has mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude about the tests.
The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you to remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test,so don’t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

“Buy-A-Something” Campaign
One way to request for general donations is to tie it into a campaign like “Buy-A-Brick to Help Build a School in Bolivia”. Make sure you have some literature to give people as well as a registration form(登記表) that includes name, address, and how many bricks the person purchased.
University Funds
If you are a student, one major source of funding is your own college or university. Many school clubs can raise a certain amount of funds through student activities. See if your club is suitable.
Letter Writing
One of the most effective ways of raising money is to do a letter campaign to as many relatives, friends, former teachers, etc. as possible. Sending a detailed letter to over 100 friends and relatives explaining the program and what you hope to accomplish while you’re on it will help you reach your goal.
Parties, Dances, Music
Use the “Who Do You Know” principle. Do you have a friend in a band? Do you know the owner of a bar or restaurant? Some simple events include playing in a band at a club, and your group gets the cover charge or a percentage of the drink sales.
Exhibitions
This is limited to people with professional art genius. If you are an artist, you can ask friends to help you hold exhibitions and donate your profit to charity or give people who need financial help.

Since many of you are planning to study at a college or university in this country, you may be curious to know what you usually do in a typical week, how you can get along with your fellow students, and so on. These are the questions I want to discuss with you today.
First, let’s talk about what your weekly schedule will look like. No matter what your major may be, you can expect to spend between four and six hours a week for each class attending lectures. Lectures are usually in very large rooms because some courses such as introduction to sociology or economics often have as many as two or three hundred students, especially at large universities. In lectures, it’s very important for you to take notes on what the professor says because the information in a lecture is often different from the information in your textbooks. Also, you can expect to have exam questions based on the lectures. So it isn’t enough to just read your textbooks; you have to attend lectures as well. In a typical week you will also have a couple of hours of discussion for every class you take. The discussion section is a small group meeting usually with fewer than thirty students where you can ask questions about the lectures, the reading, and the homework. In large universities, graduate students, called teaching assistants, usually direct discussion sections.
If your major is chemistry, or physics, or another science, you’ll also have to spend several hours a week in the lab, or laboratory, doing experiments. This means that science majors spend more time in the classroom than non science majors do. On the other hand, people who major in subjects like literature or history usually have to read and write more than science majors do.
1.The main purpose of this text is .
A. to help the students to learn about university life
B. to persuade the students to attend lectures
C. to encourage the students to take part in discussions
D. to advise the students to choose proper majors
2.We can learn from the passage that university professors .
A. spend over 6 hours on lectures each week
B. must join the students in the discussion sections
C. prefer to use textbooks in their lectures
D. require the students to read beyond the textbooks
3.A discussion section does NOT include .
A. working under the guidance of university professors
B. talking over what the students have read about the courses
C. discussing the problems related to the students’ homework
D. raising questions about what a professor has said in a lecture
4.According to the author, science majors .
A. have to work harder than non science majors
B. spend less time on their studies than non science majors
C. consider experiments more important than discussions
D. read and write less than non science majors

Children, especially boys, tend to idealize their fathers when they are young.Every little boy wants to grow up to be just like his father, and every little girl thinks her father is the smartest man on the earth. It’s not very easy to be a good father, but it’s not that difficult either.Children will truly enjoy spending time with their fathers, not just when they are kids, but even when they are adults.
Not all children communicate well with their fathers.Communication is often left to mothers, while fathers dispense advice as and when necessary.Don’t expect all conversations to centre around the dinner table.Go to your children’s bedrooms and talk to them about school, their teachers or their friends.Remember that the conversation cannot be one-sided.When your children open up to you, you also need to open up to them.
If your children come home from school feeling upset, go up to them and ask them what is the matter. And if it is something which seems to you to be a silly reason to be upset, don’t voice your opinion. It may be silly to you, but to your children it is important enough. So don’t wave the topic away by telling them not to bother about such stupid things.Simply discussing their problems with them will help them feel better.
Don’t shy away from having discussions about your teenage children’s love lives.Generally speaking, your children are definitely not going to discuss intimate details with you.Try to let them know that you are relaxed about topics on love.Tell your children how you met your wife.It is perfectly normal for children to go through feelings for the opposite sex as they grow up, and by keeping the topic closed for discussion, you are only shutting them off from discussing their feelings with you.All they will do is turn to their friends.
1.To children their fathers are usually very _____.
A.kind B.great C.serious D.strong
2.From the second paragraph we can know that _____.

If you are invited to an American friend’s home for dinner, keep in mind these general rules for polite behavior. First of all, arrive approximately on time ( but not early). Americans expect promptness. It is OK to be 10 or 15 minutes late, but not 45 minutes late. Dinner might be overcooked and ruined by then. When you are invited to someone’s home for a meal, it is polite to “bring a small gift”. Flowers or candy are always appropriate. If you have an attractive item made in your native country, your host and/ or hostess would certainly enjoy receiving that as a gift.
Some Americans don’t know about the dietary restrictions of various ethnic and religious. Don’t make a fuss about it. If your host doesn’t say anything about what you are eating, then you shouldn’t, either. Simply eat what you can and hope that no one notices what you left. If you are questioned, you may have to admit that you don’t eat meat (or whatever), but you can also say that you have enjoyed the other foods and have had “more than enough” to eat. Don’t make the cook feel obliged to prepare something else for you. Be sure to compliment the cook on the food that you enjoyed.
Don’t leave immediately after dinner, but don’t overstay your welcome, either. When your friends seem to be getting tired and running out of conversation, take their behavior as a cue to leave. The next day, call or write a thank-you note to say how much you enjoyed the evening.
If you invite someone to join you for dinner in a restaurant, phone the restaurant first to find out if you need a reservation in order to avoid a long wait for a table. To make a reservation, just give your name, the number of people in your group, and the time you plan to arrive. When you invite someone to dinner, you should be prepared to pay the bill and reach for it when it arrives. However, if your companion insists on paying his or her share, don’t get into an argument about it. Some people prefer to pay their own way so that they don’t feel indebted, and those feelings should be respected. In most American restaurants, the waiter or waitress’ tip is not added to the bill. If the service was adequate, it is customary to leave a tip equal to about 15% of bill. In expensive restaurants, leave a bit more.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 13 WORDS.)
