Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful ? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labour through your work you may say that you're "hot". That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak . For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening No one has discovered why this is so , but it leads to such familiar monologues(自言自語(yǔ)) as : "Get up, John! You'll be late for work again !" The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and -energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes . Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway . Counteract(對(duì)抗/抵消)your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to .If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch . Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor . Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.

1.If you wants to work more efficiently at your how point in the morning, you should _____.

A. change his energy cycle B. overcome his laziness

C. get up earlier than usual D. go to bed earlier

A typical day at work for Cesar Millan might include putting on his running shoes and taking a four?hour jog with 40 dogs—large and small, young and old. Amazingly, most of those dogs belong to him. To find the right career, Millan encourages kids to do what they enjoy. “A lot of people don't realize I've been working with dogs for more than 20 years—long before my TV show or book. Success followed me because I was following my dream of being the best dog trainer in the world.”

“Global warming could make humans shorter,” warn scientists who claim to have found evidence that it caused the world's first horses to shrink(收縮) nearly 50 million years ago. In fact, a team from the universities of Florida and Nebraska says it has found a link between the Earth heating up and the size of mammals – horses, in this case.

The scientists used fossils to follow the evolution of horses from their earliest appearance 56 million years ago. As temperature went up,their size went down, and vice versa(反之亦然);“ At one point they were as small as a house cat,” said Dr Jonathan Bloch, curator(博物館長(zhǎng)) of the Florida Museum of Natural History, which was quoted by the "Daily Mail" as saying.

The scientists say that the current warming could have the same effect on mammals and could even make humans smaller."Horses started out small, about the size of a small dog . What's surprising is that after they first appeared, they then became even smaller and then dramatically increased in size, and that exactly corresponds to the global warming event, followed by cooling”

"It had been known that mammals were small during that time and that it was warm, but we hadn't realized that temperature specifically was driving the evolution of body size," Dr Bloch said in the "Science" journal.

1.How did scientists find out the horses’ earliest appearance millions of years ago?

A. searching the data on the net

B. sorting through the pictures of ancient times

C. using fossils to follow the evolution

D. analyzing the related images

2.What can we infer form the passage?

A. As temperatures went up, horses dramatically increased in size

B. The temperature has no effect on mammals’ evolution

C. As temperatures went up, horses’ size went down

D. In history, it used to be warm at early times , followed by a certain period of sharply cooling down.

3.Which is the most closest meaning to the underlined words most probably mean _______.

A. react to B. be contradictory to

C. be consistent with D. differ from

4.What is the best title of the passage?

A. Global warming is to disappear

B. The temperature on earth is to decrease

C. Global warming makes human shorter

D. Mammals are dying out.

(NEW YORK) A French tourist highly praised for rescuing a two-year-old girl in Manhattan said he didn’t think twice before diving into the freezing East River.

Tuesday’s Daily News said 29-year-old Julien Duret from France was the man who left the spot quickly after the rescue last Saturday.

He lifted the little girl out of the water after she fell off the bank at the South Street Seaport museum. He handed the girl to her father, David Anderson, who had dived in after him.

“I didn’t think at all,” Duret told the Daily News. “It happened very fast. I reacted very fast.”

Duret, an engineer on vacation, was walking with his girlfriend along the pier(碼頭) when he saw something falling into the water. He thought it was a doll, but realized it was a child when he approached the river. Immediately, he took off his coat and jumped into the water.

When he reached the girl, she appeared lifeless, he said. Fortunately, when she was out of the water, she opened her eyes.

Anderson said his daughter slipped off the bank when he was adjusting his camera. An ambulance came later for her, said Duret, who was handed dry clothes from onlookers. Duret caught a taxi with his girlfriend shortly after.

The rescue happened on the day before he left for France. Duret said he didn’t realize his story of heroism had greatly moved New York until he was leaving the city the next morning.

“I don’t really think I’m a hero,” said Duret. “Anyone would do the same thing.”

1.Why was Duret in New York?

A. To meet his girlfriend.B. To spend his holiday.

C. To work as an engineer. D. To visit the Andersons.

2.What did Duret do shortly after the ambulance came?

A. He was interviewed by a newspaper.

B. He went to the hospital in the ambulance.

C. He disappeared from the spot quickly.

D. He asked his girlfriend for his dry clothes.

3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Duret thought twice before he jumped into the cold water.

B. Duret dived into the water before the girl’s father.

C. The rescue happened on the day Duret left for France.

D. Duret didn’t think he was brave enough to be a hero.
