English was always my favorite subject. In my freshman year of high school, I could write a killer composition. In my second year, my 1 allowed me to give spelling tests to the class. I had wonderful 2 of my junior year. Mrs. Alexander3 me to sit at her desk and take over the class when she had to leave the room. Only my senior English class was4, as we had a teacher right out of college who expected college-level work. Every student received a “C” or “D” grade the first quarter. 5 English was still my subject.
I graduated from high school,6early and had children. Confident about my English, I often helped my kids with their English homework. And I 7 long articles and beautiful poetry as a columnist for a newspaper. Fifteen years later, I went to college, and because I had been an "A" student, I remained an ‘‘A” student. I 8 up to my own expectations.
Yesterday, I 9 my high school report cards when I was reading old papers. That bundle of report cards 10 back the old days. I remembered sitting in my advisor's office, explaining that I had always excelled at English, and 11 that I did not deserve a “D” from that 12 teacher of my senior year. The advisor was sympathetic but unable to change a (an)13
Reading 14 my old report cards revealed something else too. I wanted to tore them or hide them. I was not an ‘‘A” student in high school English!Somehow, I had 15 myself of this, when the grades clearly reflected an 16 student with an occasional “ A ” or ‘‘ B” but mostly “C” s.
Had I lived up to those grades and 17 myself according to those letters,I would have never confidently sought my writing 18 . Had I believed in my early grades instead of myself,I would have allowed my fear of 19 to defeat my enthusiasm and damage my creativity. 20,I viewed my younger self as an “A” English student, except for that undeserved “D”.

My friend Dr. Dong had a wonderful chance to go to Seattle to present a paper at a professional meeting. When he got back to Beijing, he told me his experience.

Dr. Dong enjoyed his first days very much. At the medical conference, he felt quite confident in his area of research and was able to perform well in his presentation. But after a few days, he began to feel uncomfortable. His medical English was fine, but the social communication skills were different.

He got more and more worried that he was misunderstanding simple English greetings and table talk conventions(習(xí)俗). When someone greeted him with, “Hi, how’s it going?” he thought they had asked him “Where are you going?” and answered with the name of the conference hall, only to get a surprised stare from them. At a western style dinner, a colleague asked, “So how’re you enjoyin’ the States?” he thought he heard, “how are you enjoying your steak?” and answered that he was eating chicken, not beef. That time, they smiled, and patiently repeated the question, then both laughed at the error.

By the end of the meetings, Dr. Dong felt a deep sense of “cultural stress” and was worn out from having to pay attention to so many new expressions and ways of dealing with things. He felt his handshake was not as firm as Americans’, found that people reacted unusually when he modestly insisted his English was not good after they complimented(稱贊) him, didn’t know how to accept dinner invitations properly and therefore missed out on going to several lunches, and so on. Eventually, he was so confused that he felt the full impact of “culture shock”.

Why did Dr. Dong travel to Seattle?

A. To improve his spoken English.  B. To experience culture shock.

C. To give lectures on his research.   D. To attend a medical conference.

Which of the following best describes Dr. Dong’s experience in Seattle?

   A. Comfortable—very uncomfortable—uncomfortable.

   B. comfortable—very uncomfortable—comfortable.

   C. Comfortable—uncomfortable – very uncomfortable.

   D. Comfortable—uncomfortable – very comfortable.

Dr. Dong felt a deep sense of “cultural stress” mainly because_______.

   A. he was too modest      B. he didn’t understand cultural differences

   C. he lacked confidence     D. he was not good at English listening

Why does night fall but never break and day break but never fall?

Why are people who ride motorcycles called bikers and people who ride bikes called cyclists?

In what other language do people drive in a parkway and park in a driveway?

In what other language do they call the third hand on the clock the second hand?

Let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探討它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.

And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible; but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.

According to the passage ______.

A. sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things

B. there should be egg in an eggplant

C. pineapples are the apples on the pine tree

D. boxing rings should be round

Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning?

A. A wise man and a wise guy.

B. Overlook and oversee.

C. Quite a lot and quite a few.

D. Hot as hell and cold as hell.

The underlined words “wind up” in the last paragraph probably mean “______”.

A. blow     B. roll up     C. get hurt      D. finish

Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ______.

A. clever      B. crazy       C. lazy       D. dull

At first Kate thought the Romanian girl could not speak and understand English. Nadia would not reply to anything Kate said. Kate was in charge of showing Nadia around on her first day at Buckminster Grade School. Kate could not figure out why the school had put Nadia in a class where she could not understand what people were saying.

“Why did they do this?” Kate wondered aloud. “I mean, you can’t learn if you can’t understand the teacher.”

Nadia’s voice was a whisper. “I understand English. I will learn.” Nadia’s English was perfect.

Kate was perplexed. She couldn’t understand why Nadia did not like to speak. Then she realized that moving to a new country probably wasn’t the easiest thing to do. There were hundreds of unfamiliar and unusual things to learn all at the same time.

“There’re a lot of new things to learn, huh?” said Kate.

Nadia nodded rapidly. In a quiet voice she replied, “Many things people say, I do not understand. I have been speaking English and Romanian all my life, but I do not know what some children are saying. For example, yesterday a boy asked if I could help him find the USB port on a thin black box he was carrying. Isn’t a port a place for ships? I was confused.”

“Don’t worry,” said Kate. “You’ll figure everything out in time. You see, that thin black box was a computer. A USB port is a place where you can connect other machines to a computer.”

Nadia and Kate were quiet after that. They took notes while the teacher gave a maths lesson. To Kate’s surprise, Nadia put up her hand and offered to answer questions at the blackboard.

Nadia handled every question the teacher gave her. Some of the questions were really difficult, and no one understood what was going on except Nadia and the teacher. When the teacher said that Nadia answered everything correctly, the whole class clapped their hands.

Nadia was smiling when she sat back down next to Kate. “Some things,” she said in a normal voice, “are the same all over the world.”
