Many contemporary amateur athletes and swimmers would have broken world records if they had taken part in the first Olympic Games.Since then, records have fallen so much in track, field and swimming events as performance has greatly improved. If records fall, it is usually due to better equipment, training and diet; but recently improvements have begun to slow down.In Sydney, only three runners achieved Olympic bests with no world records. Some experts predict a ceiling for many events, such as 9.5 seconds for the 100 metres-Maurice Greene's current record is 9.79 seconds.
However, past predictions are nearly always wrong. All the levels of performance predicted in the 1930s had been reached by the 1970s.Ron Maughan, from Aberdeen University, believes that if more people around the world took part in organised sport, more records would have fallen.
One factor is the use of performance-enhancing drugs, or“doping”.Ben Johnson would still be the 100 metres world record holder if he had not been caught taking drugs.Other records remain doubtful, like Florence Griffith's 100 metres record back in 1998.Did she take drugs? If current Olympic champion, Marion Jones, took such drugs, she would probably have broken that world record more than once.
Unless we are careful,“gene-doping”will be the next big threat.
For medical purposes, scientists have already found ways to build muscle and increase strength through gene therapy. If gene therapy were used now, it would be almost impossible to find out.In the future, genetically-modified athletes might be able to run the 100 metres in 8 seconds or the marathon in under two hours.
However, if a generation of genetic monsters(轉(zhuǎn)基因怪物)were created, it would show that the whole point of sport has been lost.
It would be much better to forget the records and return to the original Olympic spirit-taking part is _______________.

The rain was coming down in sheets. It was already after 8∶30 a.m., and I was late for an important meeting.I was dressed up high heels and everything, so I called for a cab, thinking that would be faster than the subway.
It wasn't.
After a long wait, I finally got a cab, but the traffic was moving at a snails pace, and the driver stopped to pick up another customer along the way.
I was really going to be late.I looked at my watch every 10 seconds. Then, just as the traffic started moving, the driver spotted a man up ahead in a wheelchair.
“________!”the driver cried, and began to pull over.
I could see another 20 minutes waiting, the whole period of lifting him into the cab, folding up his chair and fitting it into the cab's small trunk then dropping him off who knows where, and everyone at work staring as I went into the meeting room mid-morning.
“What are you doing?!”I exclaimed to the driver.
As the words came out of my mouth, I wanted to take them back. The wrongness of my reaction started to sink in, and it shocked me.I almost wasn't sure who that person was who had just spoken.
The driver ignored me, and as I sat there in the back seat, he stopped the cab and got out, as did the other passenger, to attend to the man.
I got out of the cab and fled for the nearest subway station. As I ran, I understood that, while it wasn't incumbent on me to take the time to help the man into the cab, I shouldn't have complained about the driver stopping.I should have been able to see beyond my impatience to attend to what was most inerrant. When I thought about it at the times, and when I think about it now, this is my analysis:While I am not a particularly self centeredness that living a busy life in a big, fast paced city can promote.

The diamond is the hardest natural substance in the world. What causes this superhardness?Pressure and heat are the answers. The pressure has to be close to two million pounds. That’s per square inch.Much heat is required too.Experts say over 5,000 degrees. To make a diamond, one more thing is needed. This is ________.Pressure, heat, and carbon combine. They create a sparkling diamond. The very best are colorless.Pale blue stones─very rare─are high quality too.
Where do most diamonds come from?Over 97 percent come from Africa. The first diamond in Africa was not found by miners.Children found it, in 1866.They were playing in a shallow stream. One picked up “a pretty pebble”.The “pebble” was placed on the mantel of the fireplace. It was soon forgotten.Much later, a guest noticed the sparkle. He urged the farmer to have the stone looked at.He did.He took it to an expert in town. The “pebble” proved to be a diamond worth $2,500.That was a small fortune in those days.To date, the mines in Africa have produced over 1 billion dollars worth of diamonds.
Not all diamonds are found in Africa. Our hemisphere produced diamonds too.Brazil was a big producer in earlier times. The famous gem the Star of the South was found in brazil in 1853.
The gem the President Vargas was found more recently in Brazil. This was in 1938.A poor prospector found the stone. It was in the San Antonio River. It weighed 726.6 carats. The man sold the stone for $10,000 to a local broker. The broker almost immediately resold it.He got about $425,000.What a nice guy!
