閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A.B.C和D項中,選出最佳選項。

“The first and best of victories is for a man to conquer himself; to be conquered by himself is, of all things, the most shameful,” says Plato. Self-control is at the root of all the advantages. Let a man give in to his impulses(沖動) and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral(道德) freedom.

A single angry word has lost many friends. When Socrates found in himself any temper or anger, he would check it by speaking low in order to control himself. If you are conscious of being angry, keep your mouth shut so that you can hold back rising anger. Many a person has dropped dead in great anger. Fits of anger bring fits of disease. “Whoever the gods would destroy they first make them mad.” “Keep cool,” says Webster, “anger is not argument.” “Be calm in arguing,” says George Herbert, “for fierceness(狂怒) makes error a fault.”

To be angry with a weak man is to prove that you are not strong yourself. “Anger,” says Pythagoras, “brings with folly and ends with regret.” You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he conquers, not by the power of those which conquer him.

Self-control is man’s last and greatest victory.

If a man lacks self-control he seems to lack everything. Without it he can have no patience, no power to govern himself; he can have no self-confidence, for he will always be controlled by his strongest feeling. If he lacks self-control, the very backbone and nerve of character are lacking also. (from www.nmet168.com)

I am an e?mail user. When I first started to use the e?mail system, I used to read all my e?mail. I didn’t have much mail. I gave my friends my e?mail address. Soon I had more mail than I wanted. Some of the mail was junk mail. I was worried. I didn’t want my mail to control me.

I’ve tried some methods to help me get control of my mail. First, I check my mail at the same time every day. Also I try to allow myself only 15~20 minutes every day to process my e?mail. This doesn’t always work, but I try. Sometimes I save the messages. Sometimes I just read them, maybe answer a few, and then delete(刪除) them.

Sometimes I’m not at all interested in a message, so I don’t even open it. I delete it right away. This is very much the way I go through the mail that the postal service delivers to my home.

These methods are very simple. I have some friends who are very clever with computers. From time to time, they teach me new tricks for managing my e?mail. I’m still amazed at what e?mail can do for me! I’m still worried, however, about having too much to read.

1.The writer used to read all his e?mail because ______.

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

I was telling my boy Sonny the story of the hare (兔子) and the tortoise (烏龜). At the end I said, “Son, remember: Be slow and steady (鎮(zhèn)定的), and that will win the race. Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?”

Sonny opened his eyes wide, “Do you mean next time when I’m entering for the 60-metre race I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?”

I was shocked, “But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep!”

“He must have wished that,” Sonny said, “Otherwise how could he be so foolish as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.”

“He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted. “He won the race by perseverance (堅忍不拔), by pushing on steadily.”

Sonny thought a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. That’s for sure.”

I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be. They’re just hopeless.

1.The writer argued with his son because ________.

A. he liked tortoises while his son liked hares.

B. they disagreed about whether the tortoise was foolish.

C. he liked the story of the hare and the tortoise while his son didn’t.

D. he tried to teach his son a lesson but the son had different opinion.

2.Sonny believed that the tortoise ________.

A. in fact did win the race luckily

B. took a chance by agreeing to run a race

C. was not given a fair chance in the race

D. won the race by his own hard working

3.Billy, Tony and Sandy must be ________.

A. boys who were unknown to Sonny’s father

B. boys who Sonny has run races with before

C. boys who Sonny has never raced with before

D. boys who Sonny did not expect to race with again

4.According to the passage, who do you think learnt a lesson?

A. The tortoise B. Sonny

C. Sonny’s father D. The hare

Before going outside in the morning, many of us check a window thermometer(溫度計)for the temperature. This helps us decide what to wear. 1. . We want our food to be a certain coldness in the refrigerator. We want it a certain hotness in the oven. If we don’t feel well, we use a thermometer to see if we have a fever. We keep our rooms a certain warmth in the winter and a certain coolness in the summer.

Not all the thermometers use the same system to measure temperature. We use a system called the Fahrenheit scale. But most other countries use the Centigrade scale.

Both systems use the freezing and boiling points of water as their guide. 2. .

The most common kind of thermometer is made with mercury(水銀)inside a clear glass tube. As mercury (or any other liquid ) becomes hot, it expands. As it gets colder, it contracts(收縮). That is why on hot days the mercury line is high in the glass tube. 3..

First. Take a clear glass juice bottle that has a cap; fill the bottle with coloured water. Tap a hole in the center of the cap using a hammer and thick nail. Put the cap on the jar. Then stick a plastic straw(吸管) through the nail hole.

4..

Finally. Place a white card on the outside of the bottle and behind the straw. Now you can see the water lever easily.

5..

As the temperature goes down, the water will contract, and the lever in the straw will come down. Perhaps you will want to keep a record of the water lever in the straw each morning for a week.

A. We use and depend on thermometers to measure the temperature of many other things in our daily lives.

B. Thermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in the same way when they are heated or cooled.

C. Now that you know this rule you can make a thermometer of your own that will work.

D. The water will rise in the straw. As the temperature of the air goes up, the water will expand and rise even higher.

E. They label these in different ways. On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. On the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100degrees.

F. Take wax (you may use an old candle if you have one) and melt some of it right where the straw is struck into the cap to seal(把..粘住) them together.

G. People use thermometers which are made by themselves when travelling around the world.
