Barack Obama has never been shy about comparing himself with Abraham Lincoln. He did so when he announced his presidential election in Illinois, where both he and Lincoln served in the legislature (立法機(jī)關(guān)). "The life of a tall, thin, self-made Springfield lawyer tells us that a different future is possible." Obama said. "He tells us that there is power in words and that there is power in hope." Such comparisons have continued on big and small occasions, but the most important similarity, in Obama's mind, is how he plans to govern if elected.

Obama says he admires Doris Kearns Goodwin' s wonderful Lincoln biography, Team of Rivals. "He talks about it all the time." says a top assistant. "He is particularly interested in the idea that Lincoln successfully won the hearts of many people who had run against him for President, some of them even disagree with him firmly." "The lesson is that you shouldn't let your hatred get in the way of hiring absolutely the best people." says Obama. "I think American people are practical and so I have an interest in casting a wide net, seeking out people with a wide range of expert knowledge, including Republicans, for the highest positions in the government."

"I don't want to have people who just agree with me." He says. "I want people who are continually pushing me forward and I'd be very interested in having those sorts of Republicans in my government, especially people who can speed up a responsible and logical conclusion to the Iraq war."

60. According to Barack Obama, the biggest similarity between Lincoln and himself is ______.

A. they both lived Illinois            B. they served in the same office

C. both of them are black             D. they have the same idea in governing

61.Obama is willing to cooperate with those who disagree with him because_______.

A. he is interested in Republicans' ideas

B. he doesn't want to show his hatred to the public

C. they have the highest positions in the government

D. they may push him to make the right decisions

62. The author wrote the passage to _________.

A. compare Obama and Lincoln

B. help Obama to win more support

C. tell us something about Obama

D. announce Obama's political ideas

63. What can we infer from the passage?

   A. Obama is a member of the Republicans.

   B. The passage was written after the presidential election.

   C. Doris Goodwin is one of Obama’s assistants.

   D. In the end Lincoln was able to get the support of the people who once hated him.

People often talk as if shyness is a disease or mental condition that call be cured.I prefer to think of it as an emotional disability. It’s something we are born with and something we carry with us in our entire lives. There are too many people, however, who seem to be determined to find some way of doing away with their shyness. In my opinion.it’s a waste of time.I don’t mean hat we should do nothing about it;quite the contrary, I think we need to separate the basic fact of shyness from our ability to take part in a social environment.

Look at one of the most famous shy people of them all, Johnny Carson. This man is painfullyshy, yet for decades he made a living talking and associating(交往)with different people every night,in front of a national audience.Carson has never done away with his shyness, but he hassuccessfully found a way to deal with it to the extent that he could be,not just a talk show host, but a legend(傳奇)among talk show hosts.Look also at Sally Fields, who has recently admitted  her problem with shyness. This is a woman who has appeared in many films.TV shows and interviews, yet in her early years she was so shy that she turned down a lunch invitation from JANE Fonda because she  was terribly afraid of meeting her.

I guess that our shyness is there because each of us is born with some insecurity(不安全感) and this insecurity prevents us from reaching out to others the way people with a more open personality do.As we grow up and become adults,we allow our social skills to grow and develop. But we are still stuck in kindergarten or elementary school or wherever it was when our shyness took root in our soul.

71.In the author’s view, shyness can be explained as__________.

A.a(chǎn) disease that can be easily cured

B.a(chǎn) not very normal mental condition

C.a(chǎn)n emotional disability

D.something we pick up after birth

72.The author believes it’s a waste of time to________.

A.develop a healthy personality

B.talk with as many people as possible

C.study where shyness comes from

D.look for ways to do away with one’s shyness

73.Which of the following is TRUE of Johnny Carson?

A.He dared to speak in front of a national audience.

B.He did away with his shyness carefully.

C.He was described as a hero in some legend books.

D.He failed to become a good talk show host.

74.The passage tells us that Sally Fields was__________.

A.proud all the time                                       B.impolite when young

C.shy in her early years                                  D.close to Jane Fonda

75.The author thinks that our shyness is there because___________.

A.we are not open enough

B.we don’t feel secure at heart

C.we try to reach out to others all the time

D.we lack some social skills

Crossroads International

1.How does Crossroads work?

Crossroads is a resource network. We take goods Hong Kong doesn’t want and give them to people who badly need them.We collect those goods and give them out in the welfare arena (福利院) in Hong Kong, Mainland China, elsewhere in Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa.  71

2.Who do we help?

72  They are grass-root groups who have seen a need and tried to meet it.They can’t get the job done without back-up, though, so our task is to help them do their task. Our warehouse is full of goods, from computers to high chairs, clothing to books, stationery to medical provision, cupboards to dining sets. They send us a list of their needs and we try to match it with the resource we have in stock.

3.  73

Crossroads itself also operates on a low budget. We do not buy the goods we send. They are donated.  74   Nobody in our organization receives a salary.Even our full-time staff work on a voluntary basis.

Those that donate goods and services:

●Factories             ●Manufacturers

●Hospitals             ●Hotels

●Educational Institutions      ●Householders

●Transport Companies   ●Offices

●Other Charities

75  While we receive large quantities of goods and there is never a short supply of requests for them, we are always in need of hands to help sort and prepare them for shipping.

A.One resource that we are always in need of is people.

B.So Crossroads is just that: a Crossroads between need and resource.

       C.What can I do?

D.The welfare agencies we help do not run on large budgets.

       E.How do we operate?

F.All volunteer work is done at our warehouse.

G.Similarly, rather than raising funds for freight (貨運(yùn)), we ask transport companies to donate their services.
