I have been teaching in the United States for three semesters. During this time, I have been very impressed with the hardworking American students. Tuition fee (學(xué)費) in American universities are pretty expensive. Most American students receive little, if any, financial support. As a result, they have to work hard to pay for their tuition and other basic expenses. Tertiary (高等) education is a necessity in today’s workforce. Young people with higher education are rewarded with a good career and better salary. So how do American students support themselves?
All my American students have to work to pay for their tuition. For this reason, most universities provide limited jobs for students who need economic help. They also help students search for jobs in the community. I have been touched to see some students are so worn out from their jobs that they doze in my classroom. In addition to taking part-time jobs, students are also expected to take part in various social and sporting activities and, in fact, those who do not take part in are often looked down upon by their peers.
A number of American university students are married with families, or are single parents. These students are faced with the additional burden of raising a family. They have to spend much time, money and energy caring for their children and family. Most American university professors are strict. They test students on every unit in their course, in addition to mid-term and final exams in each semester. A lack of preparation by students may result in their failure. This means the loss of a lot of money and possibly future employment opportunities for these students. For this reason, many American students will study or stay up all night before an exam, in an effort to pass.
In contrast, Chinese students have a much easier time, because most Chinese parents pay for their kids’ tertiary education. Moreover, Chinese students do not need to worry about raising children or maintaining a family. So, Chinese students have no reason for not studying hard and achieving good marks.
【小題1】Which of the following is not the difficulty American students have to face?

A.They have to work hard to pay for the high tuition fee.

A.American students have no time to think of physical exercise.
B.Sporting activities are popular among American students.
C.American students should take part in various social activities.
D.Those who don’t participate in social and sporting activities are usually unpopular with their peers.

What should you think about in trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work .So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. Knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.

If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.

Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is bitter to face any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.

科目:高中英語 來源:2014屆廣東汕頭金山中學(xué)高二下學(xué)期期末考試英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child's acquisition (學(xué)會) of each new skill -- the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.

Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over time of coming home at night or punctuality(準(zhǔn)時)for meals. In general, the controls represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child's own happiness.

As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency(前后一致) is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality (道德). Also, parents should realize that "example is better than precept". If they are not sincere and do not practice what they preach (說教), their children may grow confused when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.

A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents' principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.

1.Eagerly watching the child’s acquisition of new skills, _________________.

A.should be avoided

B.is universal among parents

C.sets up dangerous states of worry in the child

D.will make the child lose interest in learning new things

2.In the process of children’s learning new skills, parents _________________.

A.should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they read

B.should expect a lot of the children

C.should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their own

D.should create as many learning opportunities as possible

3.The second paragraph mainly tells us that _________________.

A.parents should be strict with their children

B.parental controls reflect only the values of the community

C.parental restrictions vary, and are not always for the benefit of the children alone

D.it’s parents’ and society’s duty to control the children

4.The word“precept” in Paragraph 3 probably means “_________________”.

A.opinion           B.punishment        C.behavior          D.instruction

5.In terms of moral matters, parents should _____________________.

A.follow the rules themselves

B.be aware of the huge difference between adults and children

C.forbid things which have no foundation in morality

D.a(chǎn)lways ensure the security of their children

科目:高中英語 來源:2014屆安徽省高二下學(xué)期第一次質(zhì)量檢測英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Successful people in international business understand the cultures of other countries and learn to change their practices in different cultures. They understand the importance of avoiding business decisions based on misconceptions—mistaken ideas.

One cause of misconceptions is ethnocentrism, the belief that one’s own culture’s way of doing things is better than the way of other cultures. It’s ethnocentrism that leads to failure in international business. To avoid ethnocentrism, it’s necessary to study the different elements(組成部分)of culture: language, values and attitudes, and customs and manners.

Language

A. knowledge of the local language can help international business people in four ways. First, people can communicate directly. Second, people are usually more open in their communication with someone who speaks their language. Third, an understanding of the language allows people to infer meanings that are not said directly. Finally, knowing the language helps people to understand the culture better.

Values are people’s basic beliefs about the difference between right and wrong, good and bad . An attitude is a way of thinking or acting. Values and attitudes influence international business. For example, many people in the United States believe that chocolate from Switzerland is better than chocolate from other countries, and they buy a lot of it.

Customs and manners

Customs are common social practices. Manners are ways of acting that the society believes are polite. For example, in the United States,  it is the custom to have salad before the main course at dinner, not after. It’s not acceptable to talk with food in mouth at table. Failure to understand the customs and manners of other countries will bring difficulty selling their products. Orange juice as a breakfast drink of an American company in France doesn’t sell well because the French don’t usually drink juice with breakfast.

1.A. knowledge of the local language allows international business people _________.

A. to be more open with their customers

B. to have a better idea of their own culture

C. to express their thoughts indirectly

D. to communicate without outside help

2.The act of many people buying chocolate of Switzerland shows the role of ________.

A.a(chǎn)ttitudes          B.values            C.manners          D.customs

3.What would be the best title for the text?

A.Misconceptions in Business

B.Basic Beliefs in Business

C.International Business Culture

D.Successful International Business

4.The author’s purpose of writing this article is to tell people ___________

A.how to take a right attitude in business

B.how to avoid misunderstandings in business

C.how to use a local language in business

D.how to act politely and properly in business
