A boy was walking home from school when he saw a large, tempting (誘人的)apple on one of the branches of an apple tree hanging out over a tall fence. The boy wasn’t much of a fruit-eater,  41 a bar of chocolate if given the choice,     42   , as they say, the forbidden fruit can be tempting. Seeing the apple, the boy wanted it. The more he looked at it, the    43   he felt and the more he wanted that apple.
44  as high as he could , but even at his tallest  45  he was unable to touch it. He began to  46 up and down , as high as he could, at the  47 of each jump stretching his arms to get the apple . Still it remained out of  48 .
Not giving up , he thought , if only he had something to  49 on . His school bag wouldn’t give enough height and he didn’t want to  50  the things inside , like his lunch box , pencil case , and Game boy . Looking  51 , he hoped he might find an old box , a rock , or ,   52 luck , even a ladder , but it was a tidy neighborhood and there was nothing he could use .
He had tried everything he could think to do .   53  seeing any other choices , he gave up and started to walk   54 . At first he felt angry and disappointed thinking about how hungry he had become from his 55 , and how he really wanted that apple . The more he  56 like this , the more unhappy he became.
57   ,the boy of our story was a pretty smart guy, even if he couldn’t always get what get he wanted .He started to say to himself .,This isn’t   58    , I   don’t have the apple and I’m feeling miserable as well. There’s  59  more I can do to get the apple_that is unchangeable-but we are supposed to be able to  60 our feelings. If that’s the case, what can I do to feel better?

Kristy, 28, a cook in La Gross, often wondered what she’d do in a life-threatening situation. On August 29, she got her answer. While she was driving on a road, a big truck hit its head on a pickup car. The pickup car burst into flames. Kristy rushed out and ran to the pickup. Two farmers, Dean Berhard, 51, and his brother Donald, 44, were inside.
When she got close, Kristy could see the unconscious driver. The other man was under the passenger seat. Kristy says, “The smells were sickening. I was afraid the truck would blow up and kill us all.”
The driver of the big truck was struggling to open the passenger door, so Kristy rushed to the driver’s side. Finally they opened the door. Edward Sims was born in 1892. He was the fifth child and only son of Herbert and Dora Sims. Herbert was a blacksmith(鐵匠), and had a thriving trade making horseshoes. He was determined that his first-born son would follow him into the blacksmith. For this reason, Edward had to leave school at the age of 12,and worked with his father.
However, Edward was not cut out to be a blacksmith. Although he has an athletic body, he didn't have strong arms like his father, and he felt dizzy in the heat of the smithy.  When he tried to find alternative employment, he found it difficult because he had never learnt to read or write.
One day, he went for an interview at a solictior’s office. The job was a runner, taking documents from the office to other offices in the city. The solicitor was pleased to see that Edward was physically fit, but when he discovered that the young man couldn't read or write, he decided against employing him. "How can you deliver documents to other offices," he asked, "if you can't read the addresses on them?"
Bitterly disappointed, Edward left the building and went to wait for a tram to take him back to the suburb where his father’s smithy was. Next to the bus stop, a man was selling newspapers from a stand .
"Excuse me, son?" he said. "Would you look after my stand for a moment?"
For the next 20 minutes, Edward sold newspapers, lots of them. When the man came back, he was so delighted with his new assistant's honesty, that he offered him a job. Edward took it immediately.
In the next few months, the two men progressed from working on newspaper stands to selling newspapers, tobacco, confectionery(糖果點心)and other goods in a shop. Then they opened a second shop, and a third. Eventually, they had a chain of 25 shops in three cities.
Edward became very rich, so he employed a tutor to teach him to read and write. The tutor  was amazed at what Edward had achieved. "Imagine what you could do if you’d been able to read and write when you were younger!" he said.
