The singer, Mick Jagger, of the Rolling Stones sings a song  that tells people they can't
always get what they want but if we try sometimes we can get what we need. The past years in
my life my parents have told me this saying many times. I've always complained about the quote(引語). Although over time I have told myself to learn from it.
This year my girlfriend flew off to college in West Palm, Florida. This has been a killer for me because I haven't been able to see her and she is having a rough time in school. The last two
months have been hard but we are working through it. I have been trying to get my dad to buy
me a plane ticket to go down there. My dad told me if I brought him some money he would help me pay for the ticket. I started to complain to him because I had no way of getting any money to give him. I spent several days and  nights thinking of ways to earn money to go to see my
girlfriend. I finally came to the conclusion that I would get a job and work hard to earn some
money to give to my dad. I applied to Safeway and I ended up getting the job.
I have been working at Safeway for about a month now and work hard to earn money to go to see my girlfriend. The other day my mum had surprised me and told me that she asked her boss
if she could use their business miles(旅費) to buy me a ticket down to Florida for two weeks. I
was very thankful and told her I would help pay for anything that I have to. The thought of me
working hard and getting a job showed my mum that I really cared and was trying my best to be a successful person. I believe that you can't always get what you want but if you try sometimes,
you get what you need.

No fight can end, and no friendship can move on, until everyone says these little words: I'm sorry.
Sometimes, though, they can be difficult to say,  1  .
     It's not about winning.
Friendships aren't like the Super Bowl, and there should never be a winner and a loser. When you start
fighting with a friend, it may feel important that you "win" the fight by proving you're right and he is wrong, or by making him be the first to apologize.
        2
You may have heard the expression "His pride stood in the way." It is usually used to describe a
person who is so determined to be"right"that he lets an opportunity for happiness pass him by forever.
3   Remember: as time goes on, we usually forget who was right and who was wrong in a disagreement, and only remember the sadness of losing a friend.
   Take the first step.
Are you sick of fighting? Do you think this fight is just not important enough to ruin your friendship?
4   You don't have to take full responsibility for starting the fight, or even say that your feelings were
wrong. But you should find something you did or said that's worth apologizing for. Maybe you're sorry
that you let the fight go for so long, of that you overreacted(反應(yīng)過度的) to something your friend did.
If you say you are sorry, it's like an invitation for your friend to do the same.      5

A. Then try to be the first to apologize.
B. Stop thinking about your pride.
C .It's about taking some resposibility for the argument.
D. Don't let this happen to a friendship you care about.
E. Here are some things to keep in mind.
F. There are some special cases when you shouldn't be the one to apologize first.
G. Once you've both said it, you'll both feel a million times better.

Paul, the oracle octopus (神算章魚), was given a replica (復(fù)制品) of the World Cup as a reward
for his perfect eight-for-eight record in predicting the results of matches.
The two-year-old octopus with possible supernatural powers turned into a worldwide celebrity for
accurately predicting the German team's five World Cup wins as well as their two defeats. Paul also
tipped Spain to beat Netherlands in the final.
"We have had a lot of offers for Paul but he will definitely be staying with us and returning to his usual
job-making children smile," Sea Life spokeswoman Tanja Munzig in Oberhausen said after presenting
Pual with the World Cup replica.
There's no rational(合理的)reasons why Paul always got it right. Bettors around the world made
small fortunes based on Paul's guess, said Graham Sharpe, media relations director at William Hill in
London. "I've seen a lot of things in my lifetime but this is the first time I've ever seen people making their
picks based on what an octopus tells them. We had people coming in saying they didn't know how to
place a bet but heard about this German octopus and wanted to bet with him. It's funny. But he kept
getting it right." said Sharpe.
Sharpe said that anyone who had placed a 10-pound accumulator bet(累計下注)on Paul's prediction
from the start of the World Cup would have won 3,000 pounds($4,500)by the end of the tournament.
Paul's home at Sea Life aquarium(水族館)in Oberhausen has been crowded with visitors and media
from across Europe. Many networks broadcast his predicting live. Many networks broadcast his picks

A friend of mine, in response to a conversation we were having about the injustices of life, asked me
the question, "Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair?" Her question was
a good one. It reminded me of something I  was taught as a youngster:life isn't fair. It's a disappointment,
but it's absolutely true. One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for
others, thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. It's not and it won't be.
One of the nice things about surrendering (屈從) to the fact that life isn't fair is that it keeps us from
feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have.We know
it's not "life's job" to make everything perfect:it's our own challenge. Surrendering to this fact also keeps
us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt a different hand;
everyone has unique strengths and problems in the process of growing up, facing the reality and making
decisions; and everyone has those times that they feel unfairly treated.
The fact that life isn't fair doesn't mean we shouldn't do everything in our power to improve our own
lives or the world as a whole. To the contrary, it suggests that we should. When we don't recognize or
admit that life isn't fair, we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves. Pity, of course, is a selfdefeating
emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do. When
we do recognize that life isn't fair, however, we feel compassion (熱情) for others and for ourselves.
And compassion is a heartfelt emotion that delivers lovingkindness to everyone it touches. The next time
you find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact.
You may be surprised that it can make you out of selfpity and into helpful action.
1. The writer thought of his friend's question as a good one because ________.
A. he also wanted to know who held such an opinion
B. it made him recall something during his childhood
C. like his friend, he also thought life was unfair
D. he learned something from the question as a youngster
2. The second paragraph of the passage mainly tells us that ________.
A. it's nice to accept the injustice of life
B. it's nice to surrender to life
C. we should not feel sorry for everything
D. we should not surrender to life
3. From the passage, we can learn that the author's attitude to life is ________.
A. negative
B. positive
C. selfpity
D. indifferent
4. Which of the following could be the best title of the text?
A. A Helpful Action: Try to Feel Compassion
B. A Good Question: Why Life Isn't Fair
C. Do Our Best to Improve Ourselves
D. Surrender to the Fact That Life Isn't Fair
