Despite being used by 1.24 billion people each year, traveling on the Tube in London can actually be quite lonely.

One citizen, however, is trying to change this, “You get on the Tube and it’s completely silent and it’s weird,” says Jonathan Dunne, who has started a worldwide dialogue after giving out badges (徽章) with the words “Tube chat?” last month, encouraging passengers in London to get talking to one another, “I handed out 500 badges during rush hour in a city of 8 million, expecting most of them to be thrown away, but after about 24 hours it completely snowballed,” he says, Dunne and his “Tube chat” campaign have since been reported by media across the world, seeing TV interviews in Sweden, Brazil and the UK, as well as countless website, newspaper and magazine appearances.

Although Dunne says he’s received mostly positive feedback, not everyone agrees with his idea. Londoner Brian Wilson responded with a campaign of his own, handing out 500 badges with the words “Don’t even think about it” on them, Michael Robinson, 24, a student from London, agrees, “Being on the Tube is the only peace and quiet some people get on their journeys to and from work. It doesn’t need to be spoiled by people coming up and chatting to you,” he says.

“People assume that I just walk up and talk to strangers, which I don’t, but it’s been a great way to meet people you would never have normally spoken to,” Dunne says.

So if you ever end up using public transport in the West, why not say hello to the person next to you? Just make sure to check for a badge first.

A. By putting up posters on the tube.

B. By advocating his idea on the media.

C. By offering passengers special badges.

A. It has caught international attention.

B. It has become a worldwide campaign.

C. Most passengers have refused to accept it.

D. Wilson has made great efforts to promote it.

3.According to Michael Robinson, what should tube passengers do?

A. Hand in their feedback in time.

B. Walk up and talk to strangers.

C. Stop using public transport.

D. Enjoy the peace quietly.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A. Tube Chat or Not

B. Lonely Travel in London Tube

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing However, there is nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.

In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, king of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.

Though the belief in the merit(優(yōu)點(diǎn)) of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?

Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease. On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫學(xué)家), encourages children to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some ground.

1.The kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because .

A. they lived healthily in a dirty environment

B. they thought bath houses were too dirty to stay in

C. they considered bathing as cause of skin disease

D. They believed disease could be spread in public baths

2.Which of the following best describes Henry IV’s attitude to bathing?

A. Curious B. Afraid C. Approving D. Uninterested

3.How does the passage mainly develop?

A. By following the order of time. B. By making comparison.

C. By providing examples D. By following the order of importance.

4.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passages?

A. To call attention to the danger of dirt.

B. To introduce the history of dirt.

C. To present the change of views on dirt.

D. To stress the role of dirt.

People in the United States honor their parents with two special days:Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible(有責(zé)任感的) citizens. They give love and care. These two days make us think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with child care.

These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery(墓地). On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.

Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.

1.Which of the following is NOT a reason for children to show love and respect for parents?______.

A. Parents bring up children.

B. Parents give love and care to children.

C. Parents educate children to be good persons.

D. Parents pass away before children grow up.

2.What do you think “florists” do?______.

A. They sell flowers. B. They make and sell bread.

C. They offer enough room for having family parties. D. They sell special gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

3.What do you know from the passage?________.

A. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are both in May.

B. Fewer women worked outside the home in the past.

C. Not all the children respect their parents

D. Fathers are not as important as mothers at home.

Among the international students in Canada who are struggling to find a job there after graduation, some of them eventually make it with relative ease. They’re the ones who’ve already built up much internship (實(shí)習(xí)) experience while still attending university, as their majors offer a co-operative program.

Co-op programs, a feature (特色) of Canadian university programs, allow academic studies to be combined with work experience. During school years, students get to network with employers, gain internship experience in relevant fields, and earn academic credits that count toward their degree or diploma.

Co-op programs are available in most comprehensive universities, like the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and York University. These programs are not only open to students majoring in business but also to many science and art majors. Statistics show that nearly 30 percent of recent foreign applicants have chosen majors that also subscribe to the co-op program. “It’s easy to understand,” said a senior education counselor. He noted that working opportunities are provided by employers that build bridges with the university and most of them are well-known companies or local government organizations. Moreover, the average salary for interns is as high as C$30,000 to C$40,000 a year.

Students can choose to work during vacations or term times freely. The required duration of the internship for undergraduates ranges from eight to twelve months, or four to six months for graduate students. “The programs also benefit those students who want to apply for immigration,” added the counselor. “That’s because the policies of many provinces in Canada require a certain length of work experience of the applicants.”

1.What’s the main characteristic of co-op programs?

A. They offer a variety of jobs in different fields.

B. They make academic credits easier to gain.

C. Employers work with students on their studies.

D. Students get work experience while at university.

2.What does the example of foreign applicants indicate?

A. Co-op programs are becoming more popular.

B. The average salary for interns will increase.

C. Co-op programs are open to all majors.

D. Companies welcome foreign students.

3.Which section of a website does the text probably come from?

A. Business. B. Education. C. Lifestyle. D. Culture.
