To extinguish (熄滅)different kinds of fires, several types of fire extinguishers have been invented. They must be ready for immediate use when fire breaks out. Most portable (手提式的)kinds operate for less than a minute, so they are useful only on small fires. The law requires ships, trains, buses and planes to carry extinguishers.

Since fuel(燃料), oxygen and heat must be present in order for fire to exist, one or more of these things must be removed or reduced to extinguish a fire. If the heat is reduced by cooling the material below a certain temperature, the fire goes out. The cooling method is the most common way to put out a fire. Water is the best cooling material because it is low in cost and easy to get.

Another method of extinguishing fire is by cutting off the oxygen. This is usually done by covering the fire with sand, steam or some other things. A blanket may be used do cover a small fire.

A third method is called separation, which includes removing the fuel, or material easy to burn, from a fire, so that it can find no fuel.

The method that is used to put out a fire depends on the type of fire. Fires have been grouped in three classes(級別). Fires in wood, paper, cloth and the like are called Class A fires. These materials usually help keep the fire on. Such fires can be stopped most readily by cooling with water.

If a fire breaks out on a bus, which of the following should be ready there for you to use?

 A. Sand                 B. An extinguisher      C. A blanket.           D. Water

To cover a small piece of burning wood with a basin in order to stop the fire is an example of _______.

 A. separating the fire                             B. cutting off the oxygen

 C. removing the fuel                               D. reducing the heat

In choosing how to put out a fire, we should first be clear about_______.

 A. when it breaks out                 B. how it comes about

 C. what kind it is                      D. where it takes place

What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?

III、閱讀理解(共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C、D)中,選出最佳選項。

                                  Do dogs understand us?

Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think.

A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩).

In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words.

In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before.

The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked

out the answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive.

Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品種)known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months.

It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return!

41. From paragraph 3 we know that _________.

    A. animals are as clever as human beings

    B. dogs are smarter than parrots and chimpanzees

    C. chimpanzees have very good word-learning skills

    D. dogs have the same learning abilities as 3-year-old children

42. Both experiments show that          .

    A. Rico is smart enough to get all commands right

    B. Rico can recognize different things including toys

    C. Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematics

    D. Rico won't forget the names of objects once recognizing them

43. Which of the following statements is true?

    A. The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collie's mental abilities.

    B. Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper early training.

    C. The Border collie is world-famous for recognizing objects.

    D. Rico is born to understand its owner's commands.

44. What does the writer want to tell us?

    A. To train your dog.                        B. To talk to your dog.

    C. To be friendly to your dog.                 D. To be careful with your dog.

If you have ever been discouraged because of failure, please read on. Usually, achieving what you set out to do is not the important thing. Let me explain.

Two brothers decided to dig a deep hole behind their house. As they were working, a couple of older boys stopped by to watch.

“What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors.

“We plan to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” one of the brothers answered excitedly.

The older boys began to laugh, telling the younger ones that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible. After a long silence, one of the diggers picked up a jar(罐) full of spiders(蜘蛛), worms and a lot of insects. He removed the lid and showed the wonderful contents to the visitors who were laughing at them. Then he said quietly and confidently, “Even if we don’t dig all the way through the earth, look what we found along the way!”

Their goal was far too difficult, but it made them dig. And that is what a goal is for—to make us move in the direction we have chosen. In other words, it sets us to digging!

But not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end successfully. Not every hope will come to pass. Not every love will last. But when you fall short of your aim, perhaps you can say, “Yes, but look at what I found along the way! Look at the wonderful things which have come into my life because I tried to do something!” And I believe it is the joy in the journey, rather than in the end, that truly matters.

61. The writer told us the story to ________ .

A. advise us to treat our failures fairly

B. persuade us to make an aim for our lives

C. encourage us to learn from the two brothers

D. prove that failure helps us make achievements

62. What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Failure is the mother of success

B. When there is a will, there is a way

C. No pains, no gains

D. Joy in the journey

63. Which do we know from the passage?

A. Digging a hole all the way through the earth is impossible.

B. The two brothers will surely reach their goal one day.

C. If one has a goal, he will want to dig holes.

D. Everyone can succeed if he sets a practical goal.
