Cleverness is a gift while kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy—they’re given after all. Choice can be hard.
I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that the Internet usage was growing at 2300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I’d been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go to do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most start-ups don’t and I wasn’t sure what to expect. MacKenzie told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor. I’d always wanted to be an inventor, and she wanted me to follow my passion.
I was working at a financial firm in New York City with a bunch of very smart people and I had a brilliant boss that I much admired. I went to my boss and told him I wanted to start a company selling books on the Internet. He took me on a long walk in Central Park, listened carefully to me, and finally said, “That sounds like a really good idea, but it would be an even better idea for someone who didn’t already have a good job. ” That 1ogic made some sense to me,and he convinced me to think about it for 48 hours before making a final decision. Seen in that light, it really was a difficult choice, but finally, I decided I had to give it a shot. I didn’t think I’d regret trying and failing. And I suspected I would always be haunted by a decision to not try at all.
After much consideration, I took the less safe path to follow my passion, and I’m proud of that choice. For all of us, in the end, we are our choice.
1.What inspired the author with the idea of building an online bookstore?
A.His dream of being an inventor.
B.The support of his wife.
C.The greatly increasing usage of the Internet.
D.Millions of exciting titles.
2.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined sentence?
A.The idea of not trying would keep coming to his mind and disturb him.
B.He would be very excited if he tried it out.
C.He would be always having a doubt if he didn’t try.
D.The decision to not try the online bookstore would terrify him.
3.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Cleverness and Kindness
B.The Starting of Amazon
C.Following My Passion
D.We Are What We Choose

It is commonly believed that all over the world, boys and girls attend a mixed school, where they study together. But boys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music.
Always boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to correspond to(和…相符) the "boy code" of hiding their emotions to be a "real man".
Surprisingly, the findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls.
George Carl, headmaster of Eton, warned that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls.
The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when girls do better earlier in speaking and reading skills.
But in single-sex schools teachers can adjust lessons to boys' learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study's author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia.
Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with "boy-focused" approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given "hands-on" lessons where they are allowed to walk around. "Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine(女性的) and prefer the modern genre (類型) in which violence and sexism are major themes," James wrote.
Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel that they had to be "masterful and in charge" in relationships. "In mixed schools, boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means," the study reported.
1.The writer argues that a single-sex school would ________.
A. encourage boys to express their emotions more freely
B. help boys to be more competitive in schools.
C. force boys to he their emotions to be "real men".
D. naturally strengthen boys’ traditional image of a man.
2.Traditionally, in a mixed school boys ________.
A. behave more responsibly
B. perform relatively better
C. grow up more healthily
D. receive a better education
3.In Abigail James’ opinion, one of the advantages of single-sex schools is ________.
A. boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in
B. boys can focus on their lessons without being distracted
C. teaching can be adjusted to suiting the characteristics of boys
D. teaching can be designed to promote boys' team spirit
4.The underlined word “acute” in paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. lovelyB. seriousC. sharpD. dull

What is superpower in your opinion? What superpower would you want to have if possible?
Dreaming about whether you would want to read minds, see through walls, or have superhuman strength may sound silly, but it actually gets to the heart of what really matters in your life.
Every day in our work, we are inspired by the people we meet doing extraordinary things to improve the world.
They have a different kind of superpower that all of us possess: the power to make a difference in the lives of others.
We’re not saying that everyone needs to contribute their lives to the poor. Your lives are busy enough doing homework, playing sports, making friends, seeking after your dreams. But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. Find an issue you are interested in and learn more. Volunteer or, if you can, contribute a little money to a cause. Whatever you do, don’t be a bystander. Get involved. You may have the opportunity to make your biggest difference when you’re older. But why not start now?

Is There Life on Earth?
There was great excitement on the planet of Venus(金星) this week. For the first time Venusian scientists managed to land a satellite on the planet Earth, and it has been sending back signals as well as photographs ever since.
The satellite was directed into an area known as Manhattan (named after the great Venusian astronomer Prof. Manhattan, who first discovered it with his telescope 20,000 light years ago).
Because of excellent weather conditions and extremely strong signals, Venusian
scientists were able to get valuable information as to feasibility (可行性) of a manned flying saucer (碟) landing on Earth. A press conference was held at the Venus Institute of Technology.
“We have come to the conclusion, based on last week’s satellite landing,” Prof. Zog said, “that there is no life on Earth.”
“How do you know this?” the science reporter of the Venus Evening Star asked.
“For one thing, Earth’s surface in the area of Manhattan is made up of solid concrete and nothing can grow there. For another, the atmosphere is filled with carbon monoxide (一氧化碳) and other deadly gases and nobody could possibly breathe the air and survive.”
“What does this mean as far as our flying saucer program is concerned?”
“We shall have to take our own oxygen with us, which means a much heavier flying saucer than originally planned.”
“Are there any other dangers that you discovered in your studies?”
“Take a look at this photo. You see this dark black cloud hovering(盤旋) over the surface of Earth? We call this the Consolidated Edison Belt. We don’t know what it is made of, but it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall have to make further tests before we send a Venus Being there.”
“Over here you will notice what seems to be a river, but the satellite findings indicate it is polluted and the water is unfit to drink. This means we shall have to carry our own water, which will add even greater weight to the saucer.”
“Sir, what are all those tiny black spots on the photographs?”
“We are not certain. They seem to be metal particles(粒子) that move along certain paths. They emit gases, make noise and keep crashing into each other. There are so many of these paths and so many metal particles that it is impossible to land a flying saucer without its being smashed by one”.
“What are those stalagmite(石筍) projections sticking up?”
“They are some of granite formations that give off light at night. Prof. Glom has named them skyscrapers since they seem to be scraping the skies. ”
“If all you say is true, won’t this set back the flying saucer program several years?”
“Yes, but we shall continue as soon as the Grubstart gives us the added funds.”
Prof. Zog, why are we spending billions and billions of zilches to land a flying saucer on Earth when there is no life there?
“Because if we Venusians can learn to breathe in an Earth atmosphere, then we can live anywhere.”
1.According to Prof. Zog, the Venusians will have to take their own oxygen with them when they carry out their flying saucer program because ________.
A. they need it on their way to the planet of earth
B. the earth’s atmosphere is filled with deadly gases
C. oxygen is far from enough in the area of Manhattan
D. there is no air on the planet of Earth
2.The “dark black cloud” in the 10th paragraph indicates ________.
A. the polluted air hovering over the surface of Earth
B. the mass of tiny drops of water floating above Earth
C. the mass of small things moving through the air
D. the dark clouds gathering before a storm breaks
3.The author wishes to call our attention to the fact that ________.
A. modern man has polluted his environment to such an extent that he may destroy himself if he carries on like this
B. there is no point in spending billions and billions of zilches to land a flying saucer on Earth
C. pollution has become so serious a problem on Earth that even Venusians find life there unbearable
D. it is difficult, if not altogether impossible, to land a manned flying saucer on Earth
4.The tone of this essay is ________.
A. hopeless and objective
B. serious and critical (批評的)
C. humorous and satirical (諷刺的)
D. sensitive and subjective
