Hi, Joe. I have read about your situation. This is common for everyone to have arguments or even quarrels with friends. So take it easy, and find the way out.

You may follow my suggestions. First, try to find out that who did wrong and cause the arguments. If it is you, be brave enough to say sorry for your friend. And unless it is your friend, you shouldn’t be too hard on him or her either. Instead, try to taking it easy and be kind. Second, give yourself and your friend some times to calm down, as it is not necessary to solve the arguments immediate.

Good luck, best wishes for you!

【6】unless改成 if.考查連詞。句意:如果是朋友的錯,你不應(yīng)該對他太嚴厲。unless除非不符合句意,故unless改成 if.

【7】taking改成take.考查動詞形式。try to do“盡力做某事”,動詞不用taking,故taking改成take.

【8】times改成 time.考查名詞。some times幾次some time一段時間,此處指給自己和朋友一段時間冷靜,故times改成 time.

【9】immediate改成immediately.考查副詞。此處修飾動詞solve用副詞,指盡快解決,故immediate改成immediately.

Strange things were happening in the countryside of northeast Hebei. For three days water in the village wells rose and fell, rose and fell. Farmers noticed that the well walls had deep cracks in it. A smelly gas comes out of the cracks. In the farmyards, the chickens and even the pigs were so nervous to eat. Mice ran out of the fields looking for place to hide. Fish jumped out of their bowls and ponds. At about 3:00 am in July 28, 1976, some people saw bright lights in the sky. The sound of planes could be heard of outside the city of Tangshan even when no planes were in the sky. In the city, the water pipes in some buildings cracked and bursting. But the one million people of the city, that thought little of these events, were asleep as usually that night.

【題目】

The Post Office in Britain is famous for getting letters and parcels to places to which they should be sent. The problem is that we the public have to observe the rules. For example, we must put a stamp on a letter. If we don’t, the receiver will have to pay double. We often see the sign ALL LETTERS MUST BE CORRECTLY ADDRESSED. These days, this means having to use postcodes. If you didn’t use a postcode, it’s no good complaining that your letter should have arrived sooner. Parcels are a problem because they must be correctly packaged. If Aunt Sophie is going to send you a jar of your favorite jam, she will have to wrap it up well. The most important thing we have to do is to address our letters and parcels legibly(易讀) and correctly. This means clear handwriting and correct spelling. What we should do and what we actually do are often miles apart. Recently, the Post Office had to deliver a letter which showed a name followed by the word Arijaba. What is this, do you think? Arabic? Hiodustani(興都斯坦語)? Wrong both times! Say it out loud and you’ll see it’s just plain English. HARWICH HARBOUR

Organizing Your Time

You can set a budget for your time just as you can set a budget for your money. Since you’re trying to reduce worry rather than increase it, go into this process with a focus on maximizing(使……最大化) your personal time, rather than cramming(塞滿) as much as you can into each day.

●Set a sleep schedule. 1 Give yourself a one-hour target window for bedtime in the evening, and set a strict time to get up in the morning. Be sure that the space between your bedtime and the start of your day gives you roughly an hour more than the amount of sleep you actually need. 2

●Take care of tasks at the same time every day. Plan time for daily health care, commuting(乘公交下上班), work, shopping, eating, and chores(家務(wù)). Add in time for anything else you do most days, such as homework, exercise, or an active hobby. 3 All the time left over is your free time, to use for relaxation or whatever else you want.

4 For example, you might plan to go, dropping on your way home from work, to save the extra trip.

For many people, an irregular work schedule make this kind of budgeting difficult. 5

A.However, you can still plan to work around your schedule in the same order every day.

B.Stick to it,even on weekends.

C.Try to combine trips outside the home to maximize your free time.

D.Different days call for different approaches.

E.Therefore, you won’t lay down and start worrying about whether or not you’ll fall asleep on time.

F.Sit comfortably and focus on your breathing until the rest of your thoughts become quiet.

G.Put them in a specific order that works for you.

With the development of society, the life span of humans has stretched. Both men and women are living longer these days in industrialized countries. 【1】 In general, they can expect to live six or seven years more than men. One reason for this is biological.

One important biological factor that helps women live longer is the difference in hormones between men and women. 2 Between the ages of about 12 and 50, women produce hormones that are involved in fertility (生育能力). These hormones also have a positive effect on the heart and blood flow. In fact, women are less likely to have high blood pressure or to die from heart attacks.

___3 They help the boy defend itself against some kinds of infections. This means that women generally get sick less often and less seriously than men. The common cold is a good example: women, on average, get fewer colds than men. 4 Scientists are still not exactly sure how genes influence aging, but they believe that they do. Some think that a woman’s body cells have a tendency to age more slowly than a man’s. Others think that a man’s body cells have a tendency to age more quickly. 5

A. However, women, on average, live longer.

B. The biological factor plays an important part.

C. Women are also helped by their female genes.

D. The female hormones also protect the body in another way.

E. Recent research seems to support both of these possibilities.

F. Therefore, women are more healthy than men and can live a better life.

G. Hormones are chemicals which are produced by the body to control various body functions.

Third-Culture Kids

Did you grow up in one culture, your parents came from another, and you are now living in a totally different country? If so, then you are a third-culture kid!

The term “third-culture kid”(or TCK) was coined in the 1960s by Dr. Ruth. She first came across this phenomenon when she researched North American children living in India. Caught between two cultures, they form their very own. 【1】 About 90 percent of them have a university degree, while 40 percent pursue a post graduate or doctor degree. They usually benefit from their intercultural experience, which helps them to grow into successful academics and professionals.

2 In fact many hardships may arise from this phenomenon. A third-culture kid may not be able to adapt themselves completely to their new surroundings as expected. Instead, they may always remain an outsider in different host cultures. Max, for example, experienced this fundamental feeling of strangeness throughout his life as a third-culture kid. 3 While this can be a way to create a network of friends all around the world, it can be difficult for a third-culture kid like Max to maintain close friendships and relationships.

For a third-culture kid, it is often easier to move to a new foreign country than to return to their “home” country. After living in Australia and South Korea for many years. Louis finally returned to Turkey as a teenager. But she felt out of place when she returned to the country where she was born. 【4】 She did not share the same values as her friends’ even years after going back home.

While a third-culture kid must let go of their identity as foreigner when he/she returns, the home country can prove to be more foreign than anything he/she came across before. The peer group they face does not match the idealized image children have of “home”. 【5】

As a part of the growing “culture”, TCKs may find it a great challenge for them to feel at home in many places.

A.Yet being a third-culture kid is not always easy.

B.In general, they often reach excellent academic results.

C.This often makes it hard for them to form their own identity.

D.However, their parents can help them see the opportunities of a mobile lifestyle.

E.Their experience abroad helps them to gain a better understanding of cultural differences.

FUnlike other teens of her age, she didn’t know anything about current TV shows or fashion trends.

G.Additionally, making new friends and saying goodbye to old ones will at some point become routine for a third-culture kid.

【題目】Art museums are places where people can learn about various cultures .The increasingly popular “design museums” that are opening today ,however ,perform quite a different role .Unlike most art museums ,the design museum shows objects that are easily found by the general public .These museums sometimes even place things like fridges and washing machines in the center of the hall.

People have argued that design museums are often made use of as advertisements for new industrial technology. But their role is not simply a matter of sales—it is the honoring of excellently invented products. The difference between the window of a department store and the showcase in a design museum is that the first tries to sell you something ,while the second tells you the success of a sale.

One advantage of design museums is that they are places where people feel familiar with the exhibits .Unlike the average art museum visitors ,design museum visitors seldom feel frightened or puzzled .This is partly because design museums clearly show how and why mass-produced products work and look as they do ,and how design has improved the quality of our lives .Art museum exhibits ,on the other hand ,would most probably fill visitors with a feeling that there is something between their understanding.

In recent years ,several new design museums have opened their door ,Each of these museums has tried to satisfy the public’s growing interest in the field with new ideas .London’s Design Museum ,for example ,shows a collection of mass-produced objects from Zippo lighters to electric typewriters to a group of Italian fish-tins .The choices open to design museums seem far less strict than those to art museums ,and visitors may also sense the humorous part of our society while walking around such exhibits as interesting and unusually attractive toys collected in our everyday life.

A.show more technologically advanced products
