I used to hate myself because I wasn’t “normal”. Everyone else could play on the monkey bars and ride on a bicycle, but not 21 . I had a severe spinal cord disorder (脊髓病) and I knew I would always be much 22 than others.
I hated going to school and I hated people 23 at me. I hated seeing others smiling broadly and standing 24 and tall. And most of all, I hated looking in the 25 and seeing an ugly hunchback (駝背).

That afternoon, I was sitting by myself in a corner of the school — a spot where no one would 28 me. That’s when I first heard her voice.
“Hi. Can I sit down?”
I raised my head and there she was, with an irresistible smile on her round face.
“What are you looking at?” she asked.
“Ants.”
“What are they doing?”
“No 29 .”
“I bet they’re playing games and making friends. Don’t you think so?”
That was how our 30 started and it didn’t stop. We talked about everything under the sun—the ants, the clouds, my little niche (處境) — until it was sunset.
Then suddenly, she saw my 31 . She just stared.
My heart 32 . What I feared most had happened and I knew for sure she would 33 me now.
She stood up, pointed at my back and said, “I know 34 your back is hunched.”
I closed my eyes like a criminal waiting to be 35 . I begged in my heart for her to 36 , but she just kept on going. “I know what you’ve got in there. Do you?”
“No,” I answered 37 .
She bent and whispered in my ears.
“Your back is hunched because you’ve got a pair of wings from the angels.”
I was 38 . I looked into her eyes and her 39 touched my heart. From that day on, I started to learn to 40 myself because I have the wings of an angel and a kind-hearted friend.

I can still remember the first day when I met my best friend. I hid behind my mother and she hid behind her grandmother, 36 to look at each other. But we soon lost the 37 and started playing with each other. In the 7th grade, I first lost touch with her. She was going through family problems and I deserted her to be with the “cooler people”. 38 of my new friends liked her as much as I did because they knew she had “problems”. However, every summer we would 39 sit at each other’s home and watch soap operas and talk about everything we liked.
It was last year when I noticed the problem. I guess I was just too busy in high school to realize she needed someone there for her. Well, she made a new “best friend” and 40 did I. Then I didn’t know why, but she started cutting herself.
She was diagnosed with clinical depression(抑郁癥). I was very 41_ at first, but with the late night calls, we still stayed in touch. I wanted to be there for her since her new best friend 42 deserted her. When people were calling her 43 , I knew I still 44 her like a sister.
Yesterday she came 45 me and said this,” I never knew what a best friend was 46 I found you were the only person that would stop me from cutting, the only person that ever made me feel better about myself and my 47 . You don’t know this but I was trying to kill myself one night when you 48 me. I owe you so much, and you didn’t even know you were 49 me.” We both cried. And I guess a kind of lesson from my life so far is to never 50 your friends.

During my second year of college I had to look for another place to live in. One Sunday after church the pastor(牧師) 36 me to stay in his daughter’s room because she was studying abroad for one year.
To be honest, I really didn’t want to stay with the pastor’s family. 37 then he old me how much rent would be—a very 38__ figure that included one home-cooked meal a day. I thought about it and 39 to move in.
At the end of the term I had planned to make 40 living arrangements, since the daughter was to 41 home. But they suggested I 42 a room with their son. By this time I seemed to have been adopted(收養(yǎng))into their 43 -- her people became my people. I 44 accepted the offer.
As I emptied the daughter’s bedroom, I thought it might be 45 to have a little sister. But when I later met her, I 46 that this idea of looking after her might be more interesting than I first 47 .
We finally fell in love, married, and have been 48 one another for many years. There have been times that life turned out to be 49 than either of us could have known. But we have always been able to go 50 _ largely because we knew that somebody deeply cared.
It isn’t about marriage—it’s about 51 _ . It’s about mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers and special friends who are as 52 _ as family. It’s about anybody who can say, “I’ll be 53 -- you can count on me. I’ll try to look after you and 54 I will need you to look after me.”
Is there somebody you can 55 ? And is someone counting on you? We travel the path of life best when there is someone to look after, and when someone is looking after us.

When I first entered university, my aunt, who is an English professor, gave me a new English dictionary. I was 1 to see that it was an English English dictionary, also known as a monolingual(單語的) dictionary. 2 it was a dictionary intended for non-native learners, none of my classmates had one and, to be honest, I found it extremely 3 to use at first. I would look up words in the dictionary and still not fully understand the meaning. I was used to the 4 bilingual(雙語的)dictionaries, in which the words are 5 both in English and Chinese. I really wondered why my aunt 6 to make things so difficult for me. Now, after studying English at university for three years, I 7 that monolingual dictionaries are 8 in learning a foreign language.
As I found out, there is in fact often no perfect equivalence(對應(yīng)) between two 9 in two language. My aunt even goes so far as to 10 that a Chinese “equivalent” can never give you the 11 meaning of a word in English! Therefore, she insisted that I read the definition(定義) of a word in a monolingual dictionary when I wanted to get a better understanding of its meaning. 12 , I have come to see what she meant.
Using a monolingual dictionary for learners has helped me in another important way. This dictionary uses a(n) 13 number of words, around 2, 000, in its definitions. When I read these definitions, I am 14 exposed to the basic words and learn how they are used to explain objects and ideas. 15 this, I can express myself more easily in English.
