【題目】A rising population is one of the main reasons that there is global warming. Between 1650 and 1850 the population increased by 0.75 billion people going from 0.25 billion to one billion. From 1930 to the end of the century the population rose from two billion to over six billion. In just a third of the time the population rose by more than five times what it did before. It is expected that this trend in the changing population will continue and could even heighten. The growing population requires increasing amounts of energy. These energy demands and other supplies require production, which almost always involves the emission of greenhouse gases. The more the population increases the more greenhouse gases that are produced and the greater the increase in temperature.

The burning of fossil fuels is one of the best-known causes for global warming. The major reason for fossil fuels contributing so much to global warming is the release of carbon that occurs during the burning of fossil fuels. When people burn fossil fuels, they release large amounts of carbon by way of the release of carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide in the air then leads to global warming.

Another source of carbon dioxide comes from deforestation. In forests there is a large amount of carbon that is stored in the trees and other plants. This carbon is out of the atmosphere because the trees consume the carbon from carbon dioxide. When people cut down trees, they are frequently burned. This burning releases the carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that was stored in organic matter. Even when new trees are planted, it can take up to one hundred years to make up for the carbon that was released. It is commonly thought that because trees absorb more carbon dioxide, the atmosphere experiences positive effects.

Sophie Armstrong, the writer of Earth Care put it, “There’s no doubt that the earth is becoming warmer because of human activity rather than a random but natural phenomenon.

【題目】Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

___【1】___ Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.

For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷爾蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. __2___

Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

___3__ They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “___4___ Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”

Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. ___5___

A. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.

B. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

【題目】What do they really mean?

Food manufacturers and retailers are letting shoppers down. This the view of the CWS, which has just brought out a new report.

According to the report, shoppers believe food labels(標(biāo)簽) because they think there are strict regulations in place. 1. So the food industry can get away with all sorts of tricky strategies to make products look bigger and sound better than they are.

The report has identified the different ways in which shoppers are misled.2. Descriptions on packaging are sometimes inaccurate in an attempt to oversell the product. One example given in the report is the phrase “haddock fillets”, used for a product that is in fact cut from big blocks of fish rather than individual slices.

3. These include “traditional”, “wholesome”, or “premium”. The claim that a brand is “90% fat-free” hides the fact that it contains 10% fat, which above recommended levels. Phrases such as “free from preservatives” make a virtue out of a normal attribute of food.

Labels have a wide variety of text sizes on them. You sometimes need a magnifying glass (放大鏡) to read the small print. 4.

Another deliberate type of misinformation lies in the image. Many pictures on packets use small plates to make the product look bigger. 5.

However, misleading messages on packaging could soon be a thing of the past. The CWS recently produced a code which, if used, would end the current inaccuracies and half truths. It has called on the government to support it as a way of improving food standards.

A. Meaningless adjectives are often used to give a positive message.

B. An officer says the labels will receive very serious consideration.

C. Photographs are sometimes retouched (修飾) to achieve the same effect.

D. By contrast, the hard sell (強(qiáng)行推銷) information is given emphasis.

E. The rules are, in reality, very weak at present.

F. This result has not pleased the food industry.

G. The most common of these is poor labeling.

【題目】閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)A、B、CD,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。

When asked about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer the older we get.

For kids, happiness has a magical quality. Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved (毫無掩飾的).

In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes. Suddenly it's conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity. I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party.

In adulthood the things that bring deep joylove, marriage, birthalso bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated (復(fù)雜的) .

My definition of happiness is the capacity for enjoyment. The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. Its easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even good health.

I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday. First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunch-box and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband came home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.

Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work. I dont think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this is what satisfied her.

We, however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing weve got to have. Were so self-conscious about our right to it that its making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things arent necessarily happier.

Happiness isnt about what happens to usits about how we see what happens to us. Its the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. Its not wishing for what we dont have, but enjoying what we do possess.

【1】As one grows older, one ______.

A. tends to believe responsibility means happiness

B. associates his/her happiness less with others

C. will take fewer risks in pursuing happiness

D. feels it harder to experience happiness

【2】What can we learn about the author from Paragraphs 5 and 6?

A. She cares little about her own health.

B. She is easily satisfied by things in daily life.

C. She enjoys the freedom of traveling.

D. She prefers getting pleasure from housework.

【3】People who equal happiness with wealth and success ______.

A. pay too much attention to their right to happiness

B. consider pressure something blocking their way

C. are at a loss to make correct choices

D. are more likely to be happy

【4】Which of the following can best explain the main idea of the passage?

A. God helps those who help themselves.

B. Each man is the master of his own fate.

C. Happy is he who is content.

D. Success leads to happiness.
