What is a six-letter word that immediately comes to mind when you need some information on the Internet? You probably thought of Google. But Google wasn’t always the name of the famous search engine. In fact, the original name was BackRub!

BackRub was the name two graduate students gave to the new search engine they developed in 1996. They called it BackRub because the engine used backlinks to measure the popularity of Web sites. Later, they wanted a better name — a name that suggests huge quantities of data. They thought of the word googol. (A googol is a number followed by 100 zeros.) When they checked the Internet registry of names to see if googol was already taken, one of the students misspelled the word by mistake, and that’s how Google was born.

Google is just one example of a name change in the business world. Many other companies have decided to change their names or the names of their products. Here are some more examples:

Jerry Yang and David Filo, two young computer specialists, developed a guide to Internet content in 1994. They called it “Jerry and David’s Guide to World Wide Web.” But they soon realized that this wasn’t a very catchy name, so they searched through a dictionary and found a better one: “Yahoo.”

Sometimes companies change their names because of the popularity of one of their products. In 1962, a young runner named Phil Knight started a company called Blue Ribbon Sports. In 1971, Knight decided to design and manufacture his own brand of shoes. He named the shoes after the Greek goddess of victory — Nike. Nike shoes became so well known that Knight changed the name of the whole company to Nike.

1.B

2.C

3.C

4.A

【解析】本文主要敘述了Google,Yahoo和Nike這三家公司的名字都是改變而來的,告訴我們這些公司改名的原因,有的是因為拼寫錯誤,有的是因為原來的名字不夠吸引人,也有的是根據(jù)產(chǎn)品的名字來改名的。

1.B

【試題解析】細節(jié)題。根據(jù)文章第二段最后3行When they checked the Internet registry of names to see if googol was already taken, one of the students misspelled the word by mistake, and that’s how Google was born可知當他們核對的時候發(fā)現(xiàn)googol已經(jīng)被注冊了。但是其中一個學生拼寫錯誤了,漏掉了其中的一個o,所以就成了Google。所以這個名字是由于一個拼寫錯誤而出現(xiàn)的。故B正確。

2.2】C

【試題解析】細節(jié)題。根據(jù)文章第4段最后2行But they soon realized that this wasn’t a very catchy name, so they searched through a dictionary and found a better one: “Yahoo.”中的this wasn’t a very catchy name可知他們認識到這個名字不能吸引人,所以就改名為Yahoo。所以C 正確。

3.3】C

【試題解析】細節(jié)題。根據(jù)文章最后一段首尾句Sometimes companies change their names because of the popularity of one of their products.和He named the shoes after the Greek goddess of victory — Nike. Nike shoes became so well known that Knight changed the name of the whole company to Nike可知文章最后一段是講述部分公司是根據(jù)產(chǎn)品的名字而改名的,接著列舉了Nike公司的例子,公司我們這家公司正是根據(jù)一款鞋子的名字Nike而改名的。故C正確。

4.4】A

【試題解析】主旨大意題。本文主要敘述了Google,Yahoo和Nike這三家公司的名字都是改變而來的,告訴我們這些公司改名的原因,有的是因為拼寫錯誤,有的是因為原來的名字不夠吸引人,也有的是根據(jù)產(chǎn)品的名字來改名的。A項能夠包括本文的中心思想。

【長難句解析】

But they soon realized that this wasn’t a very catchy name, so they searched through a dictionary and found a better one: “Yahoo.”

【翻譯】但是他們很快就意識到這不是一個很有吸引力的名字,于是他們就通過字典搜索,找到了一個更好的名字:Yahoo.

【分析】首先本句中含有一個that引導的賓語從句,that是可以省略的。So引導的是一個狀語從句,表示上下文的因果關系。

Scientists in UK have grown a living human "brain". The team at Aston University created tiny bunch of cells which act like a mini nervous system.

They believe it could help find a cure for worse mental conditions like Parkinson’s disease. Professor Michael Coleman is leading the research program. He explained, "We are aiming to be able to study the human brain at the most basic level, using an actual living human cell system. Cells have to be alive and operating efficiently to enable us to really understand how the brain works. "The experiment involves changing cells from a cancer tumour (腫瘤)and making them behave like brain cells.

Although far from finished, researchers hope the false brain cells will give them a greater understanding of how real brains work. This, in turn, could significantly further research into conditions which affect the brain. Neil Hunt, chief leader of the research group, said, "It is still very early days, but in the future the research could lead to a useful tool for looking into dementia (癡呆)."

The technique could also provide a way to carry on animal test and is being supported by the Humane Research Trust (HRT). The scientists predict that over the next ten years a million people will develop dementia. Professor Coleman believes their findings could change this. He said,"We hope our research will provide scientists with a new and highly relational human experimental model to help them understand the brain better and develop new drugs to control the related disease. However, the biggest challenge at present is that we are greatly short of fund, which will slow our research."

While Andrew was getting ready for work one Friday morning, he announced to his wife that he had finally decided to ask his boss for a salary raise. All day Andrew felt nervous and anxious as he thought about the upcoming showdown. What if Mr. Larchmont refused to grant his request? Andrew had worked so hard in the last 18 months and landed some great accounts for Braer and Hopkins Advertising Agency. Of course, he deserved a wage increase.

The thought of walking into Larchmont’s office left Andrew weak in the knees. Late in the afternoon he was finally courageous enough to approach his superior. To his delight and surprise, the ever frugal Harvey Larchmont agreed to give Andrew a raise!

Andrew arrived home that evening—despite breaking all city and state speed limits—to a beautiful table set with their best china, and candles lit. His wife, Tina, had prepared a delicate meal including his favorite dishes. Immediately he figured someone from the office had tipped her off!

Next to his plate Andrew found a beautiful lettered note. It was from his wife. It read: “Congratulations, my love! I knew you’d get the raise! I prepared this dinner to show just how much I love you. I am so proud of your accomplishments!” He read it and stopped to reflect on how sensitive and caring Tina was.

After dinner, Andrew was on his way to the kitchen to get dessert when he observed that a second card had slipped out of Tina’s pocket onto the floor. He bent forward to pick it up. It read: “Don’t worry about not getting the raise! You do deserve one! You are a wonderful provider and I prepared this dinner to show you just how much I love you even though you did not get the increase.”

Suddenly tears swelled in Andrew’s eyes. Total acceptance! Tina’s support for him was not conditional upon his success at work.

The fear of rejection is often softened and we can undergo almost any setback or rejection when we know someone loves us regardless of our success or failure.

1. What was Andrew’s plan that Friday?

A. To request a wage increase from his boss.

B. To land some great accounts for the company.

C. To celebrate his success with his wife at home.

D. To get a job in the Braer and Hopkins Advertising Agency.

2. The underlined word “frugal” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “_________”.

A. wasteful B. simple C. economical D. effective

3.Why did Tina prepare a grand dinner for Andrew that day?

A. She was confident of his getting a pay raise.

B. She meant to show her support whatever the result would be.

C. She believed that her husband was the best in his company.

D. She wanted to express her gratitude for his devotion to the family.

4. We can conclude from the text that ______.

A. many fears turn out to be unfounded

B. work hard and you will be rewarded

C. we should never be afraid to ask for what is due to us

D. unconditional love brings courage and strength

In the early hours of March 8, a Boeing 777 took off from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Its destination was Beijing. But for unknown reasons, it never arrived there.

There were 239 people on the Malaysia Airlines flight, including 154 Chinese. As of March 13, 12 different countries, including Malaysia, China, Vietnam and the US, were searching for the plane.

The disappearance is an “aviation (航空) mystery”, Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, the head of Malaysia’s Civil Aviation Authority, said on March 10.There was no clear sign of a crash by March 13.

Between 1-2 hours after takeoff, the plane suddenly lost contact with people on the ground. The weather was clear, and the pilots didn’t make any calls . No evidence was found in the area where the flight last made contact. People are also talking about a possible hijacking (劫機).

International police agency Interpol confirmed on March 9 that at least two passengers on the flight had used stolen passports to get on board. “We are looking at all possibilities,” said Malaysian Transport Minister Hishamuddin Hussein. The incident is now being called simply a “plane disappearance”.

So, what are some possible causes of a plane disappearance? An AP story provided a summary.

1. A failure of the plane’s body or its engines. However, even if both engines stopped working, the plane could still glide (滑翔) for up to 20 minutes, giving pilots time to make an emergency call.

2. Bad weather. Planes are designed to fly through most severe storms. However, in June 2009, an Air France flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris crashed during a bad storm over the Atlantic Ocean.

3. A bomb. Throughout history, several planes have been brought down by bombs.

4. An accidental shoot-down by some country’s military. In July 1988, the US Navy accidentally shot down an Iran Air flight. In September 1983, a Korean Air Lines flight was shot down by a Russian fighter jet.

No matter how unlikely a situation, it’s too early to determine what really happened to MH370. It could take months, if not years, to rule out any possibilities, say experts..

1. How many cities are mentioned in this passage?

A. Four cities.B. five cities.C. Six cities.D. Seven cities.

2. What could the underlined phrase “rule out” in the last paragraph mean?

3. What could be the best title of the passage?

A. An Air CrashB. The Causes of the Disappearance

C. The Disappearance of MH 370D. An Aviation Mystery

It is one of the most annoying words in the English language and it seems there is no escaping it.The word “huh?” is in worldwide use, a study found.

Researchers discovered that languages spoken in countries from Ghana and Laos to Iceland and Italy all include ‘‘huh?”, or something that sounds very like it. They said that while the study may sound silly, the word is an absolutely necessary part of speech.Without it and similar words,it would be impossible to show that we haven’t heard or understood what had been said and this would lead to constant misunderstandings.

But while other words used in the same context, such as ‘‘sorry'’ or‘ ‘what”,vary widely across languages,“huh?” remains unchanged.

The Dutch researchers carefully studied ten languages from around the world, including Siwu, which is spoken in Ghana, and an Australian Aboriginal language,as well as Italian,Spanish,Dutch and Mandarin Chinese.

They analyzed tapes of recorded conversations for words that sounded like ‘‘huh?” and were used to request that whatever had just been said be repeated. All contained a version of ‘‘huh?”.The word was also found in another 21 languages. While there were subtle differences in each country, all sounded basically the same.

This is surprising because normally unrelated languages will use very different words to describe the same thing. For instance, the Japanese for “dog’’ is ‘‘inu”,while the French is‘ ‘chien”.It is thought that languages around the world have developed their own version of “huh?’’ because the sound is quick and simple to form,as well as being easily understood.

The researchers, said that it might seem unimportant to carry out scientific research into a word like “huh?'’ but in fact this little word is an essential tool in human communication. They also have an answer for those who claim that ‘‘huh?’’ isn’t a word. They say that it qualifies because of the small differences in its pronunciation in different languages. It also can be considered a word because it’s something we learn to say, rather than a grunt or cry that we are born knowing how to make.

1.According to researchers, the word “huh?” is very important in speech because of .

A. its important function in communication B.its simple and easy sound and spelling

C. its popularity in every language D.its stable meaning in language development

2.If you hear someone you’re speaking to say “huh?”, what should you do?

A. You should apologize to her for speaking in a low voice.

B. You should invite her to share her different views politely.

C. You should try to say what you’ve just said again in a clearer way.

D. You should ask her to repeat what she says before that.

3.The main method used in the research of “huh?” was_____________.

A. comparing different words with the same meaning in different languages

B. interviewing language experts in universities

C. talking with people from ten different countries

D. analyzing the recorded conversations in different languages

4. According to researchers,‘‘huh?” should be considered a word rather than a sound because __________ .

A. it is pronounced quite differently around the world

B. it is something humans learn to say

C. there is a clear and consistent spelling of the word

D. it is listed in most dictionaries
