　　The trophy(獎品)is the figure of a knight(騎士)holding a sword．The first awards were solid bronze but a metal shortage during World War Ⅱ meant the trophies were made of plaster(石膏)for a while．Nowadays, the figures are made of metal and given an outer coating of gold．

　　Officially known as the Academy Award of Merit, it isn’t clear where the nickname(昵稱)Oscar came from．One popular explanation is that an Academy librarian said it looked like her uncle Oscar and the name just stuck．

　　The timing of the ceremony has only been disturbed on three occasions．The first was in 1938 when serious floods in Los Angeles delayed the awards by one week．Then in 1968 the ceremony was moved from April 8 to April 10 out of respect for Dr．Martin Luther King, who had been assassinated(暗殺)a few days earlier．Another assassination－a failed attempt on President Ronald Reagan－saw the Oscars delayed by 24 hours in 1981．

　　The researchers found that a lot depends on how many people are around．They asked college students to come in to be“tested”．Some came alone, some with one or two others, and some in large groups．When they came in either alone, in pairs, or in groups, a lady went into the next room．Soon the students heard a scream, the noise of something falling and a cry for help．All of these had been pre-recorder(預(yù)先錄制)．

　　Eight out of ten of the students taking the test alone acted to help．Of the students in pairs, only two out of ten helped．Of the students in groups, none helped．

Since it was published in 1818, Frankenstein, a classic horror story, has been in print in many languages.  The monster from the novel by Mary Shelley is the result of man's uncontrolled desire to create and apply his knowledge.

On the point of death, Victor meets a ship and tells his story to the captain whose letters and diaries are then to form this novel. Victor Frankenstein's last words are, "Farewell, Walton! Avoid ambition, even if it is only the obviously innocent one of distinguishing yourself in science and discoveries."
